https://kolektiva.social/@firestorm/113460055471605559 firestorm@kolektiva.social - Whether or not you made it to last week's reading group kick off, we hope you'll join us tomorrow to discuss the first section of Rebecca Solnit's "A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster." We'll be talking about the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 (pages 13-72) in the context of our own experiences with Hurricane Helene. This is also a cool section because it includes the origin story of the Catholic Worker Movement, a radical faith movement that inspired BeLoved Asheville!

Copies of "A Paradise Built in Hell" are available at Firestorm with a discount, or at no cost for participants in financial distress. We'll also be continuing to provide childcare for kids five and up, so please let us know the names and ages of the young folks you're bringing!

Full event details and schedule can be found at https://firestorm.coop/events/3290-beholden-to-each-other-a-disaster-reading-group.html

https://infosec.exchange/@pixelnull/113454093869108122 pixelnull@infosec.exchange - if you're in infosec and haven't gotten a hold of any neighborhood-level or city-level non-profit orgs to try to get their IT and infosec infrastructures in order as a volunteer or maybe the library to have free courses people can take to learn how to protect themselves online.

*why the fuck not?*

make a plan now, it will take you 10 minutes. look for orgs that don't look like they have a lot of money. prioritize them. find out which org you want to help, get their number, and put it in your calendar for monday to call. if they don't need your help, ask them if they know of another place you can help. they probably know.

allow the fear and dread you have now to motivate you to actually act and make a promise you need to keep to another.

PARTICULARLY IF YOU ARE A WOMAN IN INFOSEC, FOCUS ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS GROUPS AND AT RISK WOMEN'S SHELTERS, THEY WILL ONLY TYPICALLY DEAL WITH CIS WOMEN

also DO NOT chicken out just post some tutorials on your fucking feed or in some discord server nobody will see. that don't count. GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND HELP HUMANS.

for example, i volunteer at a inner city non-profit that does after school programs for at risk youth. i teach basic compsci there, and mentor a few kids that want to go into infosec.

in infosec we are all EXTREMELY privileged...

FUCKING USE IT.

don't be a fucking poser leftist... this is where the fucking fist meets the Nazi's face

(and i swear to god, if you try to charge anybody, i will find you with my bike lock you fucking pig)

Politicians and media pundits often use the term “anarchists” to conjure images of lawless hooligans causing mindless destruction, warning of a dystopian world that might exist without the rule of law.
In reality, anarchists have been involved in some of the most significant political projects of the last two centuries, whether it’s striking workers winning the eight-hour work day or communities coming together to participate in #mutualaid projects. But #HBO’s new six-part docuseries, “The Anarchists,” features self-described anarchists of a whole different variety: self-interested capitalists and #crypto bros.

Anarchists carrying the torch of the long-standing political tradition are cringing at the series’ portrayal of #anarchism as being compatible with #capitalism. The series is ultimately a character-driven drama about murder and interpersonal conflicts, not a political #documentary focused on #ideology. But uncritically using the term anarchist to describe capitalists mystifies actual anarchist politics for the average viewer, they say.

Pandit Tulsidas, 52, was resting under a tree by a road junction in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where he had begged for years.

When an official approached him about a government scheme that would teach him job skills, he rejected the offer. When the man said his meals would be looked after and he would have a room to share with only one other person, he refused again.

“But when he told me I was guaranteed a job, I accepted,” he says, fearing that otherwise: “After the training, I’d end up back on the streets, because how can I eat without an income?”

Direkte Aktion - Gesprächsübungen für Union-Organizer
