Teen’s death after eating a single chip highlights risks of ultra-spicy foods | Ars Technica

The Paqui chip was seasoned with the Carolina Reaper pepper, the current hottest pepper in the world, and the Naga Viper pepper, which was the reigning hottest pepper in 2011 but is now merely among the top 10.

If you haven't kept track, heat-seeking chili growers have been breeding spicier and spicier hybrids. In 2007, the Ghost Pepper was the hottest, but in 2011, it was overthrown by a succession of new hybrids, including the Infinity Chili, the Naga Viper pepper, and the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper. Then, in 2013, the Carolina Reaper came along and has yet to be unseated—which may be for the best.

As a group of doctors from the University of Mississippi wrote in a 2020 medical case report:

The content of capsaicin, the compound that gives peppers their spicy taste, may be measured in Scoville heat units (SHU). The Carolina Reaper pepper boasts up to 2,200,000 SHU. For reference, standard pepper spray contains around 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 SHU, ghost pepper 1,000,000 SHU, and jalapeno pepper 3,500 SHU.

The Naga Viper can carry as much as about 1.4 million SHU.

I don't need this ultra-spicy stuff. Even a bit of chili is enough for me.

Thanks to all the great tips I got from people, my kratky pepper plant that was dying and was covered with aphids is now thriving and 5 fully grown peppers and lots of tiny ones.

The solution of 1 table spoon of organic dishwashing soap with one table spoon of Neem oil in 2L spray bottle killed all the aphids (after washing it off with water in the bathroom) and adding 1/3rd of the container with nutrients and water keeps getting the plants well fed and happy.

Sunday cleanup and gardening!

Had 3 #pepper plants growing in one nursery pot and had to take the apart in order to let them grow and produce pepper

Started by removing the soil, them clean up the roots, removed all the small pieces that were attached to them and slowly took them apart.

I need to disinfect them before putting them in separate #Kratky containers.

May give away or try to sell the when they are bigger.

I wonder if people would buy packs of #fertilizer in small packs for 20L #kratky
#hydroponics with instruction on how to use them.

I make them for my use & found it really time saving to prepare them in advance to just mix them with water when my plants are germinated & mature enough to be transferred to bucket.

I make different ones for #tomato, #pepper, #cucumber, #melon, #eggplant. each pack will be about 5 euros.

Time to spice up the next soup!

Lots of jalapeno peppers are growing on the 4 plants i have. 2 in soil doing much better than the 2 hydroponic ones.

But I'm happy to have them healthy and giving me peppers no matter how big they are.

I am excited because I did a seed exchange with a guy and he is sending me seeds of giant jalapeno, they are the size of bell peppers and less spicy than the small ones. I think I can train myself to eat them raw with food or in sandwich.
