Have a few bottles that needs to be covered to prevent algae growth. The best solution is aluminum foil. But it needs to be covered with tape to prevent it from getting destroyed after a few days.
Only problem is, I no longer see the water level in the container. But it's ok for lettuce, 2L is more than enough for one lettuce.

I bought a large number of mesh cups after my last trip to #Ghana to take with me for fhd planned workshops and ito use them at the #Aquaponics system we were planning to build at #Kumasi agriculture college.
My sickness, followed by #Covid restrictions prevented me from travelling and I put everything in storage before moving back to south of #France.
As I am trying to restart my experiments with various solutions to grow #vegetables at home, I came across these small mesh cups that are perfect match for the 2L #milk bottles in France. The same with 1L #bottles and many other #juice sold in #France and in #Europe.
The 2L is perfect because it will have enough water and nutrients for a leafy vegetable like #lettuce or #kale to grow without the need to refill it
All I need to do is to wrap the bottle with aluminum foil, fill it with proper mix of nutrients and water and put them under a #GrowLight or by the window to get #sunshine.

The seed starting on the other hand wasn't very successful.
Time to start a new batch inside a seed starter with heating pad.

I have a tabletop #hydroponic garden on my dresser. The mint sent an enterprising runner across the dresser, behind the bookcase, and has emerged from its travels on the other side, a little over four feet and change. Sorry, fella. It's time for a trim and some mint tea.

Had to add a other 5L of water and nutrients to it.
Easiest way to grow cucumbers at home. Just a 15l bucket and some nutrients. Top up every week or 2 and pick up delicious fresh cucumbers every day for weeks.
I really love it when plants grow healthy and massive roots in a kratky system.
Started this late, but since I'm living in south of France, the weather is perfect for growing vegetables up until early winter.
The plant is full of flowers and I have been pollinating them by hand just to make sure they are ok.
Will follow up with more pictures later as they grow!
The 15L paint bucket is not food safe, I spray painted it with a food safe paint I bought long time ago, but still not convinced it's a good idea. I feel stupid using it, but I'm sure it has much less chemicals than any store bought product I ever purchase.

Lots of jalapeno peppers are growing on the 4 plants i have. 2 in soil doing much better than the 2 hydroponic ones.
But I'm happy to have them healthy and giving me peppers no matter how big they are.
I am excited because I did a seed exchange with a guy and he is sending me seeds of giant jalapeno, they are the size of bell peppers and less spicy than the small ones. I think I can train myself to eat them raw with food or in sandwich.

This is a kit sold on AliExpress, it is pretty easy to make at home for those who want to try it. It is pretty efficient for herbs and leafy vegetables, but also midget tomatoes and pepper.
I build one long time ago for my daughter, that was my first attempt to grow vegetables hydroponically. It wasn't so successful because we didn't have the main addition t the project: GOOD LIGHTS!
Using a couple of 20W LED lighbulbs at 6000K would be sufficient to have a pretty successful system without risking to see the lettuce bolting or dying after just a couple of weeks.
Also, the choice of the right fertilizer and correct pH level are very important to have a successful first attempt.

I would highly recommend putting the airpump on timer, you only need to keep it going a few minutes in the morning and afternoon to oxygenate the water. No need to keep it on 24/7.
You also need to have equipment to check the pH and the EC level, those can be a bit harder, but the 2 units in this link are good enough to start:

It is worth spending little more on buying a few more calibration bags because the pH tester is a bit whacked.

This page has a lot of good information for those who want to learn more about growing leafy vegetables in a hydroponic system, the information can be a little overwhelming at first, but don't feel intimidated by it, it is actually easier than you think to succeed with it.
First of all, it is growing much more on one side making it hard to keep in place.
Second, my silly laziness let the algae grow on the roots and the wick of the plant so i have to wash it off now.
Going to put some extra reinforcement on the side and put aluminum foil around the bottle to prevent the light to get in and cause algae growth.
