From my ongoing series of animals that live in a German animal shelter...

Benno

13 years ago, Benno was living on the streets as a stray when a family took him in. Shortly afterwards, the family also adopted Dina as a little kitten from our shelter. After this long time, both had to come back to the shelter due to a strong allergy of a family member. This was of course a shock for both cats and Benno in particular reacted with aggression to the changed environment and his lack of outdoor access. In addition, both suffered from obesity and age-related health problems. It was not easy to find a new home for them. But finally, after almost a year in the shelter, they made it! A couple adopted them despite all their problems. In the meantime, both have lost weight, their health problems are largely under control and Benno has already become much more accessible in his new home.

The intention of my posts is not to find people that adopt those pets. This German animal shelter accepts only local adoptions and has a very good placement rate. My intention is to raise awareness for all those beautiful pets in the shelters out there waiting for you to be their hero. Go to your nearest animal shelter to find your new pet. Adopt! Don't shop!

Ava

One of the many kittens we currently have at the shelter. They all were trapped at feeding sites or local farms. If possible, older cats are normally brought back to the area where they were trapped after they got neutered, but kittens go into adoption as they adopt pretty good to a new life together with us humans.

Max

A short-term resident of the shelter from last year. I almost forgot to post his picture and story. But he deserves to be posted too. Max, three year old Jack Russell Terrier, came to the animal shelter because his owner couldn't take care of him anymore. Fortunately dogs of his age and size normally don't have to stay long in our shelter. After only a short time, he was able to move to his new home.

AEA BETHLEHEM SHELTER - Promoting animal welfare

AEA Bethlehem Shelter

Animal Environment Associated (AEA) in #Bethlehem #Palestine is the only animal #shelter situated in the #WestBank. Founded by Diana Babish in 2016, the organisation provides a safe environment for thousands of #dogs and #cats and works with the local authorities to prevent the poisoning and shooting of dogs as a brutal form of animal control. AEA-Bethlehem is the only shelter that provides #treatment to injured dogs, cats and other #animals, and arranges formal animal #fostering and adaptions. They also provide #spay and #neutering services to the animals in their care, and to those who will be adopted. AEA-Bethlehem is also working to change policies that allow the abuse and the poisoning of dogs without penalty and for vets that witness these atrocities to be held accountable.. AEA-Bethlehem receives no government #funding, relying completely on urgently needed #donations. They also encourage local people to #volunteer at the shelter and visit schools to educate children about #AnimalWelfare and the #environment.

Goku

The only 5 months old Maltese was the gift for an already older lady from her son. But unfortunately the lady was soon overwhelmed with the young dog. And so he came to us at the animal shelter. A cute little puppy for whom the whole life is one big adventure. Every day there is something new for him to learn. Fortunately, people were quickly interested in him and he is now in his new home.

Arco

A 25 kg puppy? That's Arco. With only 6 months the Labrador Retriever came to the animal shelter because his owner couldn't care for him anymore. A friendly dog that hasn't seen and learned much in his so far short life. One of his hobbies is ripping the blankets apart. The hearts of many volunteer melted away and he quickly found a new home. Dog school waiting for you, Arco!

These two gorgeous little girls are the last rescues released here just before dark on Monday... a heartfelt welcome! 💖💕💖

🐾Team Sintti🐾 will be providing an extended all night buffet for all the hedgehogs to help them get ready for the winter, I will personally guarantee that.

The majority of laying hens in Denmark suffer from keel bone fractures

Painful fractures: Large eggs push small hens to the breaking point, study finds

The researchers behind the new study call it a huge global problem for animal welfare.

"We see these types of fractures in all production systems. That is, regardless of whether the hens are kept in cages, or they are organic or barn or free-range hens. In other words, it is a widespread problem in all parts of the industry," says Jens Peter Christensen.

There´s a new kid on the block !!!

Yesterday, right after dark, @saijaszoo and I released another rescue hedgehog on the premises.
This little gal belongs to the same "posse" with the two released earlier this month, she just needed a little more time in Saija´s care than the others...

The cute newcomer spent a good while here before wondering into the darkness, and I´m quite sure I spotted her feeding here around 2 PM. Let´s see if she decides to stick around !

As for the previous rescues, one of the two chose to roam elsewhere for good. The other one has now become somewhat of a regular.

The more the merrier...

Late Monday evening, just before midnight, these two little rescue hedgehogs - a boy and a (very shy) girl - were set free on the premises after being cared for and looked after at @saijaszoo until now. Energetic and lively little critters !
Our current hedgehog gang has already proved that the little forest area right next to the 🐾Team Sintti HQ🐾 is quite suitable and safe for them to live in. Whether or not these guys choose to stick around or roam elsewhere is, of course, all up to them - but if they do stay, I´m completely prepared to watch over and feed them for the rest of summer and through autumn. At the moment both the kids weigh about half a kilo each and will need to almost double that to survive the Finnish winter. For me, it would be a great honour to help turn these little cuties into spiky, fat blobs... 🤣
Now we´ll just have to wait and see what happens !
