Your support in the form of financial assistance will be allocated to our small animal shelter in Quebec City. The shelter serves as employment for my husband, Shoshin, who has faced numerous challenges stemming from a severe mental illness. We express our gratitude on behalf of both of us, Nancy and Shoshin, as well as our cherished animals.

UK ‘in violation of international law’ over poverty levels, says UN envoy

Poverty levels in the UK are “simply not acceptable” and the [UK] government is violating international law, the United Nations’ poverty envoy has said ahead of a visit to the country this week, when he will urge ministers to increase welfare spending.

Olivier De Schutter, the UN’s special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, cited research showing universal credit payments of £85 a week for single adults over 25 were “grossly insufficient” and described the UK’s main welfare system as “a leaking bucket”.

A new chapter for mental health
Leveraging libraries for community well-being

BEN MILLER
OCT 26, 2023

..."While the #library was a destination for me as a young reader, it’s now a destination for many in my #community looking for #shelter from the elements or assistance with complex social and #health related issues. We usually drive by the library a few minutes before it opens, and I always see a line of people waiting outside for the doors to open. After seeing this scene several times, I put two and two together and realized that these were not overzealous readers wanting to get in for the latest book release; no, these were individuals, mostly unhoused, waiting to come inside. Sadly, scenes like this are all too common throughout the country as libraries have evolved to be a front door for those in our community looking for respite or help.
...
In the United States, public libraries have started prioritizing patrons' mental health and well-being, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. While some libraries offer mental health resources and training for their staff, few provide direct services, and research on the acceptability and efficacy of these services in libraries, particularly for adolescents, is still up and coming. The rise of public libraries as mental health resources raises questions about resource trustworthiness, the role of library workers, and integrating mental health initiatives into library settings. Said differently, it’s an amazingly novel platform for meeting people where they are at for those who are willing and able to embrace it but we still have some work to do.
...
Libraries can also establish dedicated sections or resource centers with a comprehensive collection of materials related to mental health and addiction. This collection should be easy to access, including books, brochures, online resources, and information about local mental health services, support groups, and treatment facilities. This is one way to help ensure that individuals seeking help or information can easily find the valuable resources within the library.
...
Libraries can work with other organizations to host informational sessions, workshops, or support groups within the library. They can also invite mental health professionals and counselors to hold office hours or provide consultations on-site. These partnerships ensure that individuals in need receive the necessary care and assistance they need for that moment."...

Yogan and Menthé’s Pacific Northwest Trip (Part 3)

"This is our funny USA building in Humboldt County.  MenthĂ© and I built it in about 10 days.

We used old first-growth cedar for the frame and old yellow shakes for the roof.  The timber is a mix between French and American techniques; the low wall in shingles and the high wall in colombage. The roof is curved like the ‘Philibert Delorme roof’; we didn’t use a lot of wood to make the curve because we screwed the inside of the plank on to the top of the curve, a cheap beautiful technique.

The upper little roof is where you can watch from the bedroom mezzanine — just for fun.  The gypsy Dodge does not have a motor, so it needs to be moved with a tractor on the property.  It’s a friend’s bedroom, 6 ft. high!!!!!!

AEA BETHLEHEM SHELTER - Promoting animal welfare

AEA Bethlehem Shelter

Animal Environment Associated (AEA) in #Bethlehem #Palestine is the only animal #shelter situated in the #WestBank. Founded by Diana Babish in 2016, the organisation provides a safe environment for thousands of #dogs and #cats and works with the local authorities to prevent the poisoning and shooting of dogs as a brutal form of animal control. AEA-Bethlehem is the only shelter that provides #treatment to injured dogs, cats and other #animals, and arranges formal animal #fostering and adaptions. They also provide #spay and #neutering services to the animals in their care, and to those who will be adopted. AEA-Bethlehem is also working to change policies that allow the abuse and the poisoning of dogs without penalty and for vets that witness these atrocities to be held accountable.. AEA-Bethlehem receives no government #funding, relying completely on urgently needed #donations. They also encourage local people to #volunteer at the shelter and visit schools to educate children about #AnimalWelfare and the #environment.

The house that can withstand a cyclone: how traditional dwellings are making a comeback in Vanuatu

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/09/the-house-that-can-withstand-a-cyclone-how-traditional-dwellings-are-making-a-comeback-in-vanuatu

A saeklon haos is a one-room building, built as a place to sleep, and often forms part of a rural living compound that include a separate kitchen, smol haos (pit latrine), and bathing area. Increasingly, these traditional structures stand alongside buildings made with cement, corrugated metal sheet roofing, and other non-traditional materials.
