Chinese social media users hilariously mock AI video fails

TikTok and Bilibili users transform nonsensical AI glitches into real-world performance art.

Researchers describe how to tell if ChatGPT is confabulating

Finding out whether the AI is uncertain about facts or phrasing is the key.

https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/06/researchers-describe-how-to-tell-if-chatgpt-is-confabulating/

This is not what you think. It's about how the software can tell that it's probably screwed up. This article won't help an LLM user tell if she's being bullshitted by the LLM.

Also, this reminds me of the old joke...

Q: How can tell that a politician is lying?
A: His lips move.

The LLM guesses that its answers are bullshit when some of its answers contradict others. So this is a breakthrough? How was this not obvious from the beginning?

This means it's not a great idea to simply force the LLM to return "I don't know" ...

A better answer would be "I don't know enough, and I'm not intelligent enough to confidently give you an answer. I'm basically just glorified autocomplete."

Sutskever "Cracked" Team

Safe Superintelligence, Inc. seeks to safely build AI far beyond human capability.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/06/ex-openai-star-sutskever-shoots-for-superintelligent-ai-with-new-company/

"We will do it through revolutionary breakthroughs produced by a small cracked team."

Now I think he probably meant a "crack" team.

The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48
Crack \Crack\, a.
Of superior excellence; having qualities to be boasted of;
as, a crack shot. [Colloq.]
[1913 Webster]

But maybe that was a Freudian slip. This all seems like crackpot nonsense to me.

OpenAI is currently seeking to create AGI, or artificial general intelligence, which would hypothetically match human intelligence at performing a wide variety of tasks without specific training.

Psychologists gave up on the idea of "general intelligence" decades ago. People have mental skills--many of them. There is no "general intelligence." That's why no one pays any attention to "intelligence" tests anymore.

What the hell is meant by "superintelligence" anyway? Computers can be programmed to do some things better than humans. For example, they can usually calculate much, much more quickly than human beings. Is this "superintelligence"?

It's time to admit that there is no artificial intelligence because there is no intelligence. There are only many different mental abilities. The word intelligence is not useful. Hence, the term "artificial intelligence" is also useless.

Scammers like Sutskever should be ignored. They certainly shouldn't be given money.

More Fun with AI

News app makes up news and credits it to made up people.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/top-news-app-us-has-chinese-origins-writes-fiction-with-help-ai-2024-06-05/

Another example of an "AI" pulling shit out of its anus.

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) - Last Christmas Eve, NewsBreak, opens new tab, a free app with roots in China that is the most downloaded news app in the United States, published an alarming piece about a small town shooting. It was headlined "Christmas Day Tragedy Strikes Bridgeton, New Jersey Amid Rising Gun Violence in Small Towns."\
\
The problem was, no such shooting took place. The Bridgeton, New Jersey police department posted a statement on Facebook on December 27 dismissing the article - produced using AI technology - as "entirely false".\
\
"Nothing even similar to this story occurred on or around Christmas, or even in recent memory for the area they described," the post said. "It seems this 'news' outlet's AI writes fiction they have no problem publishing to readers."

A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence

https://righttowarn.ai/

So long as there is no effective government oversight of these corporations, current and former employees are among the few people who can hold them accountable to the public. Yet broad confidentiality agreements block us from voicing our concerns, except to the very companies that may be failing to address these issues. Ordinary whistleblower protections are insufficient because they focus on illegal activity, whereas many of the risks we are concerned about are not yet regulated.

...

We therefore call upon advanced AI companies to commit to these principles:

  1. That the company will not enter into or enforce any agreement that prohibits “disparagement” or criticism of the company for risk-related concerns, nor retaliate for risk-related criticism by hindering any vested economic benefit;
  2. That the company will facilitate a verifiably anonymous process for current and former employees to raise risk-related concerns to the company’s board, to regulators, and to an appropriate independent organization with relevant expertise;
  3. That the company will support a culture of open criticism and allow its current and former employees to raise risk-related concerns about its technologies to the public, to the company’s board, to regulators, or to an appropriate independent organization with relevant expertise, so long as trade secrets and other intellectual property interests are appropriately protected;
  4. That the company will not retaliate against current and former employees who publicly share risk-related confidential information after other processes have failed. We accept that any effort to report risk-related concerns should avoid releasing confidential information unnecessarily. Therefore, once an adequate process for anonymously raising concerns to the company’s board, to regulators, and to an appropriate independent organization with relevant expertise exists, we accept that concerns should be raised through such a process initially. However, as long as such a process does not exist, current and former employees should retain their freedom to report their concerns to the public.

Air Canada must honor refund policy invented by airline’s chatbot

Air Canada appears to have quietly killed its costly chatbot support.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/02/air-canada-must-honor-refund-policy-invented-by-airlines-chatbot/

After months of resisting, Air Canada was forced to give a partial refund to a grieving passenger who was misled by an airline chatbot inaccurately explaining the airline's bereavement travel policy.

Ha ha!

Ha ha!

The myth of AI lives on. Wake up people. It may be artificial, but it is definitely not intelligent.

I assure you, an AI didn't write a terrible "George Carlin" routine

by Cory Doctorow

https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/29/pay-no-attention/#to-the-little-man-behind-the-curtain

That's four reasons for AI hype:\
\
I. to win investors and customers;\
\
II. to cover customers' and users' embarrassment when the AI doesn't perform;\
\
III. AI dreamers so high on their own supply that they can't tell truth from fantasy;\
\
IV. A business-model for doomsayers who form an unholy alliance with AI companies by parroting their silliest hype in warning form.\
\
But there's a fifth motivation for criti-hype: to simplify otherwise tedious and complex situations. As Jamie Zawinski writes, this is the motivation behind the obvious lie that the "autonomous cars" on the streets of San Francisco have no driver:\
\
https://www.jwz.org/blog/2024/01/driverless-cars-always-have-a-driver/\
\
GM's Cruise division was forced to shutter its SF operations after one of its "self-driving" cars dragged an injured pedestrian for 20 feet:\

Pluralistic: The AI hype bubble is the new crypto hype bubble (09 Mar 2023)

Cory Doctorow

https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/09/autocomplete-worshippers/

AI has all the hallmarks of a classic pump-and-dump, starting with terminology. AI isn't "artificial" and it's not "intelligent." "Machine learning" doesn't learn. On this week's Trashfuture podcast, they made an excellent (and profane and hilarious) case that ChatGPT is best understood as a sophisticated form of autocomplete – not our new robot overlord.\
\
https://open.spotify.com/episode/4NHKMZZNKi0w9mOhPYIL4T

And when autocomplete encounters a new input – when you try to type something you've never typed before – it tries to get you to finish your sentence with the statistically median thing that everyone would type next, on average. Usually that produces something utterly bland, but sometimes the results can be hilarious. Back in 2018, I started to text our babysitter with "hey are you free to sit" only to have Android finish the sentence with "on my face" (not something I'd ever typed!):
