III. AI dreamers so high on their own supply that they can't tell truth from fantasy;\

In #Großbritannien ermany, the challenge has resulted in the hospitalization of at least one student, according to news portal Tagesschau. A 14-year old student in the US state of #Massachusetts died hours after taking part in the #challenge. It is unclear whether his death was caused by the spicy #chip.
The company behind the chips used in the challenge has meanwhile pulled the product from shelves.

AI has all the hallmarks of a classic pump-and-dump, starting with terminology. AI isn't "artificial" and it's not "intelligent." "Machine learning" doesn't learn. On this week's Trashfuture podcast, they made an excellent (and profane and hilarious) case that ChatGPT is best understood as a sophisticated form of autocomplete – not our new robot overlord.\

Usually that produces something utterly bland, but sometimes the results can be hilarious. Back in 2018, I started to text our babysitter with "hey are you free to sit" only to have Android finish the sentence with "on my face" (not something I'd ever typed!):

Er werden grote woorden gebruikt in de discussie rond de aanpassingen in het werk van Roald Dahl. Maar is er werkelijk sprake van ‘castratie’, of heeft niemand de nieuwe edities goed gelezen? Loes Reijmer ontrafelt de mediadynamiek en komt tot een opzienbarende ontdekking.
Ugh nee, niet weer over Roald Dahl. We weten het nu wel. De Britse uitgeverij Puffin heeft het oeuvre van de kinderboekenschrijver deels herschreven. (...) Wat valt er nog meer over te zeggen?
Nou, dit bijvoorbeeld: er klopt weinig van het beeld dat in de media is ontstaan. De alarmerende krantenkoppen, het gejammer in talkshows, de verhitte tweetjes van niet-de-minsten: allemaal erg overdreven.
Inmiddels denk ik dat de mediadynamiek die dit onderwerp heeft gekregen meer zegt over de tijd waarin we leven dan het genderneutraliseren van de Oempa Loempa’s. De drang om grote woorden te gebruiken was opzienbarend, het gebrek aan nieuwsgierigheid en zorgvuldigheid óók. (...)

De wereld van Dahl was getransformeerd tot rubberentegelparadijs, zoveel was duidelijk. In de boeken zou voortaan tergend naïef idealisme de toon zetten, niet meer het misantropische, soms wrede realisme dat ze zo bijzonder en aantrekkelijk maakt. (...)
In de Nederlandse reacties bleef onderbelicht dat The Daily Telegraph een conservatieve, rechtse krant is. De site heeft zelfs een apart kopje ‘Woke’, waaronder afgelopen week onder meer een opiniestuk van Jordan Peterson werd gepubliceerd (‘Justin Trudeau, Canada’s clown prince, is the future of the woke-West’). Ook verscheen er een enthousiast artikel over zuivelboeren die op sociale media ‘vegan-mythes’ te lijf gaan. Ook het nieuws over de aanpassingen in het werk van Dahl en de onthutste reacties erop werden bij dit kopje ondergebracht. (...)
Toch zijn veel van de wijzigingen begrijpelijk of niet zo erg, zeker als je de verleiding weerstaat ze in het overzichtelijke, versimpelde frame van ‘woke-censuur’ te zien.
Contextloos en kort na elkaar opgesomd leken ze absoluut potsierlijk. De heksen die niet meer werkzaam zijn als caissière ‘of brieven tikken op een kantoor’, maar die wetenschapper of zakenvrouw zijn. Het kamermeisje dat veranderd is in schoonmaker. Matilda die geen Rudyard Kipling leest, maar Jane Austen. Graafmachines die niet eens meer zwart van kleur mogen zijn, hoe overspannen wil je het hebben?
Maar sommige elementen in de tijdloos geachte verhalen zijn ook gewoon gedateerd. (...)
Is daarmee het hele boek ‘gereduceerd’, ‘tandeloos gemaakt’, ja zelfs ‘gecastreerd’?
Eerder waren er ook al dingen aangepast, vertelde de Nederlandse uitgever. Eigenlijk gebeurde dat bij elke nieuwe editie. In een vorige herziening, hij wist niet meer precies om welk boek het ging, sprak een Chinees personage niet langer de ‘r’ als ‘l’ uit. Een stereotiep grapje van het niveau Gordon, dat kunnen we missen. Niemand zei er iets over. (...)

Kennelijk waren de wijzigingen zo subtiel dat niemand er acht op sloeg, maandenlang. Tot een krant ze bij elkaar veegde, en ze in grote chocoladeletters in de etalage zette.

The other kind of search — "exploratory search" — is the hard one. That's where you don't know what you don't know. What's the right phone for me? What's the deal with the Thirty Years' War? Getting a satisfactory answer is more iterative. You throw a bunch of keywords into the search box, you scroll through the links, you try new terms. It's not perfect, and it's skewed by the profit motives of advertisers and the implicit judgments that #Google makes behind the scenes about which pages count as authoritative. But it's what made it possible for us to find a needle in an online haystack.
