Some Tips on How to Check if a Screenshot Has Been Photoshopped

The image shows a smartphone with a camera icon on its screen, which is being examined closely by a magnifying glass. In the background, there is a spiral notebook and some red warning signs. The scene appears to be set on a light-coloured surface, possibly a desk or table.
Well, maybe they should not have given away how to easily fake a screenshot yourself, but still some useful tips to keep in mind. It helps to know what to zoom in on to look at.

I did not know about the Forensically app, which is a web based app that can analyse any image in depth and create heatmaps of stuff that’s been edited in.

Before Replacing Your Phone Battery Watch This — Scams Abound

The image shows a pile of counterfeit iPhone batteries in the foreground, with more batteries visible in the background. A person's hand is peeling back the label of one battery to reveal inconsistencies. The most striking detail is the discrepancy between the labeling on the batteries. While some batteries have labels claiming to be authentic Apple products, a close examination reveals inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the labeling.
Bottom line is, you really cannot trust ad hoc online or flea market sellers (and neither Facebook Marketplace sellers). As shown in this video, even 500+ “positive” reviews really mean nothing at all. That online “bargain” may not just cost you a fake battery, but could even damage your device.

Online shopping syndicate warning in South Africa

A woman wearing a black hoodie which is obscuring the top of her head. Her hands are holding a toy size shopping trolley in front of her.
Hot on the heels of today’s report about some incredibly weak passwords that South Africans are using online, and then re-using across other websites, comes this warning now about very realistic looking fake online shopping sites that closely resemble the real brand.

We have Black Friday coming up, as well as the festive season, so everyone is looking out for bargains. We should never be clicking on links we receive over instant messengers or e-mails, but now you want to be doubly sure you are actually on Takealot, or whatever site you expect to be on.

I’d suggest you check the URL carefully before making purchases, and rather use your saved bookmarks to access sites you regularly use. Your password manager refusing to show a login, is also a sign you may be on a fake site.

Sutskever "Cracked" Team

Safe Superintelligence, Inc. seeks to safely build AI far beyond human capability.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2024/06/ex-openai-star-sutskever-shoots-for-superintelligent-ai-with-new-company/

"We will do it through revolutionary breakthroughs produced by a small cracked team."

Now I think he probably meant a "crack" team.

The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48
Crack \Crack\, a.
Of superior excellence; having qualities to be boasted of;
as, a crack shot. [Colloq.]
[1913 Webster]

But maybe that was a Freudian slip. This all seems like crackpot nonsense to me.

OpenAI is currently seeking to create AGI, or artificial general intelligence, which would hypothetically match human intelligence at performing a wide variety of tasks without specific training.

Psychologists gave up on the idea of "general intelligence" decades ago. People have mental skills--many of them. There is no "general intelligence." That's why no one pays any attention to "intelligence" tests anymore.

What the hell is meant by "superintelligence" anyway? Computers can be programmed to do some things better than humans. For example, they can usually calculate much, much more quickly than human beings. Is this "superintelligence"?

It's time to admit that there is no artificial intelligence because there is no intelligence. There are only many different mental abilities. The word intelligence is not useful. Hence, the term "artificial intelligence" is also useless.

Scammers like Sutskever should be ignored. They certainly shouldn't be given money.

A Warning about the Bradford Exchange and its "Roach Motel" business model

The packages from the Bradford Exchange, an American company that's been selling collectibles, trinkets and jewelry since the 1970s, had been coming to his St. John's home since July.

"I think this is outrageous. That shouldn't be. They shouldn't be allowed to get away with that sort of a thing," Walker, 92, said in a recent interview at his St. John's home.

Walker said he didn't knowingly sign up for any subscription program, nor does he want the coins he received. But despite writing to the company to cancel, Walker continued to be charged.

7 Questions to Ask to Protect Yourself From #Medicare #Advantage #Scams
DIANE ARCHER

DIANE ARCHER
Nov 21, 2023

During this Medicare Open Enrollment period, ask yourself these seven questions. And, please know that you can always call the Medicare Rights Center at 1-800-333-4114 or your SHIP—State Health Insurance Assistance Program—for free, unbiased advice on any of your Medicare questions.
...
In a Medicare Advantage plan, a corporate insurance company decides when you get care, often requiring you to get its approval first. Medicare Advantage plans also restrict access to physicians and too often second-guess your treating physicians, denying you needed care inappropriately. The less care the Medicare Advantage plan provides, the more the insurance company profits. You will pay more upfront in traditional Medicare if you don’t have Medicaid and need to buy supplemental coverage, but you are likely to spend a lot less out of pocket when you need costly care. Regardless of whether you stay in traditional Medicare or enroll in Medicare Advantage, you still need to pay your Part B premium.
Q. Should I trust an insurance agent’s advice about my Medicare options? No. Unfortunately, insurance agents are paid more to steer you away from traditional Medicare and into a Medicare Advantage plan, even if it does not meet your needs. While some insurance agents might be good, you can’t know whom to trust. Keep in mind that while Medicare Advantage plans tell you that they offer you extra benefits, you still need to pay your Part B premium, and extra benefits are often very limited and come with high out-of-pocket costs; be aware that many Medicare Advantage plans won’t cover as much necessary medical and hospital care as traditional Medicare."...

Yet another 'Fintech' is taking a dirt nap.
This one is has been in trouble before:

In December, the CFPB ordered LendUp, a fintech primarily known for its earned wage access product, to cease lending operations after allegedly misleading and deceiving customers.

So payday loans. Quality "Fintech", they must have had an app.
But in true fashion, the roaches are scurrying around creating new versions of themselves ( "Rebranding" ) to continue fleecing desperate people.
