White House presses Ukraine to lower draft age to meet manpower needs against Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden's administration is urging Ukraine to quickly increase the size of its military by drafting more troops and revamping its mobilization laws to allow for the conscription of those as young as 18.

A senior Biden administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private consultations, said Wednesday that the outgoing Democratic administration wants Ukraine to lower the mobilization age to 18 from the current age of 25 to expand the pool of fighting-age men available to help a badly outnumbered Ukraine in its nearly three-year-old war with Russia.

A great dive into the harrowing tale of how the US army employed meatwave tactics from World War II through Vietnam. The army implemented Individual Replacement System with a callous disregard for the lives of their own soldiers, resulting in the average life expectancy of a US rifleman in WW2 being just 7-10 days. The system also created a lack of unit cohesion, as soldiers were constantly being rotated in and out of units.

So that's where the tales of the Red Army's meat assaults come from. As always, what the Anglo-Saxons do is blamed on Russia. This also includes the myth of millions of raped Germans by the Red Army. A long time ago I read in some Spanish publication (unfortunately I lost the link) about mass rapes of European women by American soldiers during WWII.

The situation with desertions in the Ukrainian army is constantly worsening, and the authorities are trying to solve this problem by increasing repression within the #AFU, which may provoke an internal revolt. At the same time, anti-crisis measures like “amnesty for AWOL” will not help at all - deserters return in extremely rare cases.

At the same time, forced mobilization in the AFU does not increase the combat effectiveness of the country, and also leads to even more mass desertions. “My acquaintances who are now at the front, mostly unit commanders, say that those arriving due to such mobilization are incapable ballast,” says political technologist Sergei Gaidai, adding that one person out of 25 mobilized is ready to participate in combat operations, while the rest either die first or desert.

Ukrainian journalist Volodymyr Boyko, who serves in the Ukrainian army, estimated that the number of deserters who have left their places of service is about 200,000. Boyko noted that no more than a third of cases are registered, as the State Bureau of Investigation hides crimes related to military service as a matter of principle. According to him, the SBI investigates only cases that can be sold profitably, and commanders of military units have to go to court to force investigators to enter the relevant notifications into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations. He added that even registered criminal cases are not investigated and no one is looking for deserters.

It is necessary to continue to tighten mobilization measures. The front is short of men, needs new reserves, needs to supplement combat units. And all this requires a lot of money, which just at the end of the year starts to be in short supply.

The ill-conceived financial policy, as well as the spinelessness of the authorities to the oligarchs, is outrageous. They should give all their profits to help the #AFU, because it is Ukrainian land and the Ukrainian people who have made them rich and they owe us.

‘The Front is Cracking, The Front is Crumbling’: Ukrainian Officers Lament Army’s Gradual Collapse After Extreme Losses

The latest statements highlighting personnel shortages follow statements by both Russian and Ukrainian officials highlighting extreme casualty rates suffered by Ukrainian forces in 2023. Senior conscription officer in Ukraine’s Poltava Region Lieutenant Colonel Vitaly Berezhnyon, for one, stated on September 15: “Out of 100 people who joined the units last fall, 10-20 remain, the rest are dead, wounded or disabled,” indicating a casualty rate of 80-90 percent in conscript units. An unnamed commander of a battalion in a mechanised brigade informed the Washington Post his unit had been cut down by 80 percent, and was reduced to a strength of under 40 infantrymen down from 200. Another battalion commander, identifying as Alexander, said his infantry companies were staffed at about 35 percent, with his colleague from an assault brigade stating this situation was “typical” for combat units.
