In his opening remarks in the court session when #AlexMurdaugh got his sentence the judge said something like that of all the murderers who had sat before him he never heard someone who was able or willing to describe the very moment at which they turned into a murderer. I've been finding that thought very interesting ever since, the psychological search for the phenomenological moment in time after which you're a murderer, and before which you weren't: What happens in your mind at this exact moment? Here is someone who tries to give that answer - and yet apparently veeres off in the end. But the text does answer one other question, the one as to my motives:

After all, since meeting #Macarthur and beginning to write about those crimes, I myself had been preoccupied with a similar problem: how does one turn a life [...] into a story?

Because that's what I've been preoccupied with for the past couple of years. Not mine, of course, but life is life, after all.

Btw. I'm pretty sure the answer to the question will be completely banal.

De Nederlandse landbouwsector boekte afgelopen jaar een exportrecord, bleek afgelopen week uit het jaarlijkse rapport van het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) en de Wageningen Universiteit (WUR). De media berichtten hierover in dier voege. Aangezien het woord ‘record’ 27 keer wordt genoemd in het 116 pagina’s tellende rapport was dit ook lastig te vermijden.

Ik heb bezwaren tegen deze publicatie. Niet tegen de getallen. Wel tegen de woorden. En tegen het inhoudelijke onbegrip. (...)

Het veelvuldige gebruik van het woord ‘record’ duidt op fan-gedrag. Zo van: kijk onze landbouwsector eens lekker bezig zijn.

Overdreven? Ik bleef vooral hangen aan deze zin. ‘De forse percentages (van de groei van het landbouwaandeel in het goederenoverschot, red.) benadrukken nog maar eens dat de landbouw van groot belang is voor de Nederlandse goederenhandel en de Nederlandse economie als geheel.’ Hup landbouw hup, laat de leeuw niet in z’n hempie staan.

Voor de goede orde: het volume van de export van landbouwgoederen daalde vorig jaar. (...) Omdat de prijzen harder stegen dan het volume daalde, resulteerde per saldo een toename van de waarde in euro’s van de export. (...)

Het inhoudelijke onbegrip is nog storender. Het rapport ademt vanuit al z’n poriën de boodschap dat exportgroei (van landbouwgoederen) goed is, en meer export beter, en nog meer export nog beter. Vandaar ook de hierboven geciteerde zin waarin staat dat de landbouw zo belangrijk is voor de Nederlandse economie als geheel. Maar dit is onjuist. Sterker: het handelsoverschot van Nederland is een probleem. (...)
