Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is the 3rd Advent and also National Poinsettia Day.
The plan originates in Mexico and was used by the Aztecs and there is a legend that a poor girl brought seeds to Jesus manger, and they turned into beautiful Poinsettias. They are common here in Europe, in Germany we call it Christmas star, but they don't last that long here and also not that ideal for pets.

Today is Gingerbread Decorating Day. Also, a kind of tradition here in Germany, building gingerbread houses or other gingerbread art. Sometimes it's even a team challenge where the best house/art is awarded by a jury. It's usually a fun activity!

Do you put up Christmas decorations (if you observe it), e.g. lights? A tree? Reindeer or other winter decoration? In Europe it's winter themed, but I am curious how the decoration looks in the Southern Hemisphere.

I've been on the phone a lot to customer service with various companies which means spending a ton of time on hold. I suppose only older people have time? Or are they thinking with cell phones you can carry on with your day while not great music plays. I can play games and do other things on my phone while on hold, and even get ready for the day (dressing, most grooming) but the one thing I hesitate to do, other than take a bio break, is to brush my teeth.

Birthdays, everyone has them and families have different traditions. Both of us have birthdays in December but had very different experiences growing up. I got the “you’ll get a big gift at Xmas” that never showed up while Fred’s family did a big tree but made sure his gift didn’t go under it. We’ve never been the type to have big b’day parties and I tend to message people privately if I don't see them in person.

Now that is winter I can't hang out in flip-flops so I wear BureBure Classic Felted Wool Ankle Boots with a rubberized sole. Like bare feet but warm and I can wear them in snow as long as it’s packed down. Initially they were way too big but I put some insoles in and now they are great. I had wanted Glerups but they weren't available. Maybe you’re transitioning to warmer or wetter weather, what is your fav footwear of the moment?

As I’ve aged, I’ve found many friends have either moved away or had kids – either way, we just don’t get together with people like we used to. When we did, we usually ended up eating then playing games. Now when I get together with friends IRL we at least do the outside walk and talk. There’s a video call every Sunday and, while we talk about stuff in our part of the world but the most fun is when we play a game. We’ve played both Pictionary and Guess-Up when you show a word and others get you to guess the word.

Are games/activities an integral part of how you socialize or do you tend to sit and chat? Do you try to meet new people or is your dance card full?

Growing up is kind of strange because you think your experiences are the same as everyone else’s…although as you age you find out that isn’t true. Your experiences aren’t even the same as your sibling's if you have them. Mix in some “ladylike” and “gentlemanly” stuff and there’s a world of weirdness. I was taught not to kick at things because it’s not ladylike. As a result, I suck at anything that requires a weight shift…like kickboxing, golf, and baseball. What is something you learned growing up that has zero use as an adult? Share an experience or comment on the experiences shared here.

I know someone was talking about password updating and complexity but I want to talk more about personal continuity (at work an admin should be set up to access work materials) and having something happen to you. On REDDIT a 🚩is a partner or parent insisting on having your passwords as it implies a lack of privacy. I would too. I'm a big advocate of joint/supplementary access rather than sharing passwords. I've told Fred to put my password manager password in his password manager in case something happens, especially for utility payments that are linked to my credit card.

Love them or hate them, let’s talk about passwords.

Canadians (and I suspect many cultures) suffer from tall poppy syndrome – that is not wanting to stand out by overtly excelling at an activity. As a result, many people never learn how to accept compliments. It took me a while to get to the simple thank you stage. If I am complimented on an article of clothing so I tend to say where I got it. Do you recognize positive things about other people? How do you respond when someone compliments you?

Welcome to #CheckIn for Wednesday December First!

Why howdy there Checkin people, it’s my last day as moderator this round, so I’ll be saying Håfa Adai and Hasta la Vista for a spell. Cass will be taking over.

For me, this date always brings to mind James Taylor’s song “Sweet Baby James,” as some of the lyrics are:

Now the first of December was covered with snow
So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Now the Berkshires seemed dreamlike
On account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go…

Of course when I think of the Holiday Season and snow, I can’t help thinking of another song, Joni Mitchell’s “River,” where she sings

But it don't snow here
It stays pretty green
I'm gonna make a lot of money
Then I'm gonna quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river I could skate away on

We get snow in the nearby Laguna Mountains (sometimes,) but the last time it snowed in town here in San Diego was in the '60s. I was at school in the quad on break when it occurred. Nobody knew what was happening until somebody shouted "Hey, it's snowing!"
So you can talk about snow, songs, or whatever. See ya next around about Christmas.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Tuesday, November 30th!

Today marks the birth of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better know under his pen name of Mark Twain.
Born this day 186 years ago, 1835 in Florida, Missouri - died on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut, aged 74.

An ardent imperialist, Twain was also an adamant supporter of the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of slaves, he was a strong supporter of labor, who wrote glowingly about unions in the river boating industry in Life on the Mississippi, which was read in union halls decades later.

Twain was opposed to the vivisection practices of his day. His objection was not on a scientific basis but rather an ethical one. He specifically cited the pain caused to the animal as his basis of his opposition.
“I am not interested to know whether Vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't. ... The pains which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity towards it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.”

Though Twain was a Presbyterian, he was critical of organized religion and certain elements of Christianity throughout his later life. For example he wrote, "Faith is believing what you know ain't so", and "If Christ were here now there is one thing he would not be – a Christian.”

Reportedly, Mark Twain claimed to be the first author to use the typewriter, and his entire manuscript for Life on the Mississippi was submitted to the publisher in typeface. But, despite his enamor with the “newfangled typing machine,” Twain quickly became frustrated with the typewriter.

He was also somewhat of a Crazy Cat Lady. No small wonder I like him!

On this day in 1947, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution (not implemented) recommending the adoption of the Partition Plan for Palestine, dividing it into two separate states—an Arab and a Jewish one—that would retain an economic union.
The Plan, devised in cooperation with Jewish organizations, was accepted by the Jewish Agency for Palestine, despite dissatisfaction over territorial limits set on the proposed Jewish State. Arab leaders and governments rejected it and indicated an unwillingness to accept any form of territorial division, arguing that it violated the principles of national self-determination in the UN Charter which granted people the right to decide their own destiny Its rejection by Arab interests led to the 1947–1949 Palestine war, the results of which is an ongoing bummer.

That said, some of the notable people celebrating birthdays today, including Anna Faris, Diane Ladd, Don Cheadle, Howie Mandel, Joel Coen, Mariano Rivera, Vin Scully and more. Speaking of celebrities, on this date in 1981 American film actress Natalie Wood drowned under mysterious circumstances while vacationing on a yacht off Santa Catalina Island, California. Why howdy there Checkin people, this day marks the start of the period of Advent that ends on Christmas Eve.

Advent is observed with the lighting of advent candles, display of wreaths and special ceremonies. Advent also anticipates the coming again to earth of Jesus Christ. Advent (meaning ‘to come’ in Latin) is the period before Christmas when Christians prepare for and celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Christ. It is an ancient tradition that dates from the first century after the birth of Christ.

Based on the modern advent calendar, most people assume that Advent runs from December 1st – December 24th. Advent as a religious period actually begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, or the Sunday nearest the Feast of St. Andrew on November 30th if you prefer. This means the date can vary depending on the year from November 27th (an Advent that is 27 days long) to December 3rd (an Advent of only 22 days).

I only get excited by the candies and other treats in my advent calendar, according to which, it's already December 13. (Licks chocolate off finger.) As a long-lapsed Christian, this means little to me, but means a good deal to about a third of humanity.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Saturday, November 27th

American-Chinese actor, martial artist, and screenwriter BruceLee was born 81 years ago today. The son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen, Lee was born in the Chinatown area of San Francisco, on November 27, 1940, to parents from Hong Kong, and was raised with his family in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He suffered “death by misfortune” in 1973 when he had a fatal hypersensitive reaction to the prescription pain reliever Equagesic (Aspirin/meprobamate) while working in Hong Kong.

We were college students when the Bruce Lee’s martial arts movies were released. Needless to say, he was a big deal in the Asian/Pac-Islander community. My best friend cut his back by shattering an overhead lamp while reenacting a kick from a scene in one of the films. We rushed him to the hospital for his 15 stitches.

Watching those movies now they seem rather shoddy and poorly filmed, but it doesn’t change what an electrifying affect they had on us as young men. The fight scene choreography remains among some of the best on film, and retain a huge influence on movie scenes of hand-to-hand personal combat.

Welcome to #CheckIn for Friday, November 26th

Today is either Black Friday (which has been going on all month, apparently,) or Buy Nothing Day. It’s also the day my sisters begin decorating for Christmas, except for one, who begins right after clearing Thanksgiving dinner. It’s her Holiday tradition.

I got nothing going today except for working on the feral cat shelter a little more. I'm cutting a little window int the back wall so we can watch what's going on inside. I'm putting a sheet of Lucite inside and out, so it's insulated. Then I'll stuff the inside of the house with clean, fresh straw to keep the space warm and dry through the winter. If I have time, I'll start the second window install on the outbuilding remodel. That could take the rest of the day, since I need to demo the original down to the raw opening before installing the new one. After that comes hanging the new door, and then paint and stucco. Further plans are for drywall and paint, adding a solar ceiling light, then floor to ceiling shelving, and a work bench.

Since Thanksgiving officially kicks off the Silly Season in our family, what traditions, if any, do you follow at this time of year?

What’s the Real History of Black Friday?

The retail bonanza known as Black Friday is now an integral part of many Thanksgiving celebrations, but this holiday tradition has darker roots than you might imagine.

It’s either Thanksgiving or the National Day or Mourning in the USA.

On October 3, 1863, expressing gratitude for a pivotal Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26, 1863.A few years later in 1870, Congress followed suit by passing legislation making Thanksgiving (along with Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Independence Day) a national holiday. This was signed into law on June 28, 1870, by President Ulysses S. Grant.

Now as an observance of the Pilgrims who invaded the continent, had help from the natives in order survive, whom they then rewarded by killing them, (look it up,) that’s a hard no for me. But as a celebration of the Union kicking the Confederacy’s racist, elitist ass? Well HELL YES!

As day of reflection upon the many things for which I am grateful, I can totally get behind that, as the Attitude of Gratitude is how I deal with living in a cruel and uncertain world. Every day is Thanksgiving Day for me, for I am grateful for what I have, and just as much grateful for what I do not have, even if it is only a case of “YET.” (Y.E.T = You’re Eligible Too.)
