How to Record an Indoor Cycling Ride with Strava, whether manual or Peloton Bike, Zwift, the Expresso, etc

Card showing a map of a route completed with distance, elevation gain, time etc for a virtual cycle ride
I really like exercising on my Elliptical trainer with the Strava app because I can stick to a schedule no matter what the weather is outside, and I can still compete with my friends.

Likewise, cycling also suffers from weather issues outside. Strava does allow you to sync data from indoor cycling into the app though, so you can still complete from your living room with your friends.

Some advanced indoor cycling trainers like Peloton bike, or cycling apps like Zwift, now have built-in Strava compatibility. So, I’ve been seeing some friends competing on virtual cycling races all around the world (from their living room).

Strava does not count indoor cycling sessions, whether manually entered or via smart trainer towards Strava challenges. Whether they are recorded manually or as Virtual Rides from a cycling app, they are still ignored when it comes to leaderboards and challenges. But it is still great to share your exercise data in interesting ways, as that social aspect helps a lot to motivate you, especially if you train on your own.

Strava as an app does a pretty good job as it has various safeguards for location data privacy, and having integration with Apple Health, Samsung Health, etc also means that Android and iOS users can compete with each other across the restrictions of their own operating systems.

Around lake Bodom. All Children of Bodom fans should visit Bodom at least once, it's a rule.

Actual route around lake Bodom was pretty boring tbh. Lots of farms, cars and hills, with the lake pretty much hidden all the time behind private properties.

67km, my new daily record, yay!

I'm loving doing small cycling video clips with the Sjcam SJ6 action camera, but I just can't seem to mount it on my bike without the audio picking up what sounds like a geiger meter. It's for sure distortion from the frame so need to hunt from some better mount probably. Or maybe try mounting it on my helmet. I just fear looking a bit silly riding around town with a camera on top of the helmet :P

Otherwise the mic seems pretty ok, picking up an unsurprisingly little amount of wind noise. Feels silly sharing any of the videos since I have to rip out the sound.

Any recommendations for bicycle mounts for action cameras? GoPro mounts are fine, the things should be compatible.

The yearly "Kilometrikisa" is here again in #Finland. It's a #cycling "competition" aiming to promote travelling by #bike, whether it be to work or other commutes. Teams "compete" against each other in who logs the most kilometres during the competition period running from start of May to end of September. There are no prizes, just a good fuzzy feeling.

#Elokapina (Extinction Rebellion Finland) has a team for the fourth year. I've participated four times, the first year just as myself. Last year I did 1245km which was somewhat more than the last years. This year targeting for some amount of increase to that 💪

Any similar national cycling related events in other countries?

Bought a second hand SJ6 Legend actioncam and mounted it on my mountain bike. Unfortunately with 4K video and stabilization enabled the battery failed under 1/3 of my ride. I guess a lower resolution or a new battery. No sound as the mic picked up a crazy amount of distortion from the bike. Hopefully that can be tuned somehow.

Helsinki sure is full of construction works currently, feels like half the city is being re-built.

Ps. Yeah, I need to get myself a #PeerTube account. Any good instances people would recommend that are open for signups or any good instances that are not but would have me? I wouldn't post a lot. I looked at a few public lists already and couldn't choose one.

Scenes from a #bike trip in #Ottawa today, along the #Rideau #Canal.

Even though it was quite hot out at 28°C, this is still April our "brown grass and no leaves" month here. As you can see there is still #snow and #ice around.

The one photo of the heavy equipment is there to remove the ice skating chalets from the canal - even though they did not get any use this year.

The small, covered #sailboat, a Siren 17, was abandoned on the canal last year. The Parks Canada lockkeepers secured it for the winter but it has still not been claimed by the owner. Hopefully when the canal is filled it can be floated off, put on a trailer and be sent home.

Here is a little project I do each spring. I take a broom and hike over to this transitional ramp from a local road onto the #bike pathway network and sweep it. Over the winter it gets covered in lots of sand and gravel and is quite a hazard for #cyclists in the springtime. it is like trying to make a turn on ball bearings and easy to wipe out there.

I don't really use #Strava to compete with other people, more to compete with myself. But I find some of the top charts for some sections of my rides a bit silly.

Does any cyclist really reach 52km/h on a level ground? I mean, sure, I have a mountain bike, but still this seems a bit of a strech to me.
