I love that the two leaders on my Annual 2024 Peloton Challenge Board are a 70+ year old with 16,664 minutes and an 88 year old with 7,299 minutes; They are very inspirational! I'm not doing too bad at 5,011 minutes of exercise for the year either though. #peleton #exercise #fitness #longevity

This was a good short video that take you through the progression of learning how to hang from a bar and use that as an exercise tool to improve both grip strength and shoulder mobility.

Chicken Fat
Robert Preston (1962)
If, like me, you were an elementary school student in the US in the 1960s, you should remember this record. It was distributed, for free, to every school in the US by the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Physical fitness and science education were national security priorities. We stood next to our desks and exercised to this record. I have to admit, I don't remember how to do some of these exercises. If you grew up watching Captain Kangaroo, you should remember this.
Robert Preston was famous for his starring role in The Music Man, and this was recorded while they were working on the soundtrack album.

How the mid-Victorians worked, ate and died
Analysis of the mid-Victorian period in the U.K. reveals that life expectancy at age 5 was as good or better than exists today, and the incidence of degenerative disease was 10% of ours.

Hacking BLE to Liberate your Exercise Equipment eg for the Domyos EL500 elliptical trainer
It’s a story we’ve heard many times before: if you want to get your data from the Domyos EL500 elliptical trainer, you need to use a proprietary smartphone application that talks to the device over Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE). To add insult to injury, the only way the software will export your workout information is by producing a JPG image of a graph. This just won’t do, so Juan Carlos Jiménez gives us yet another extensive write-up, which provides an excellent introduction to practical BLE hacking.
Yes, the process may seem like a bit more effort, but it could have three major potential advantages:
- If the supplier decides to no longer support the app or device, or goes out of business, this won’t affect the hack.
- It looks like some additional data may even be able to be extracted.
- Your data need not be captured and read by the app any longer, meaning increased privacy.
The project is not yet completed though, as it seems the data capture and analysis is still being worked on. Looks like a project well worth keeping an eye on.
The unpacking and analysis of how the BLE GATT comms works is also very interesting.

Google can turn ANC earbuds into a heart rate monitor with no extra hardware – with interesting upsides
Google performed two sets of studies with 153 people that found APG “achieves consistently accurate heart rate (3.21% median error across participants in all activity scenarios) and heart rate variability (2.70% median error in inter-beat interval) measurements.”
Compared to existing HR sensors, it’s not impacted by skin tones. Ear canal size and “sub-optimal seal conditions” also do not impact accuracy.
So apart from the skin pigmentation advantage, there is also no extra device or hardware required, and wearing ear buds during exercise is a pretty common behaviour. The downside is that no-one really wears earbuds 24/7.

The bicibús: how Barcelona got kids cycling safely to school – and loving it!
he bus leaves Monday to Friday at 8.30am sharp outside the Sant Antoni market in #Barcelona’s #Eixample district, but this is no ordinary vehicle; it has hundreds of wheels, dozens of drivers – and no passengers. This is the Barcelona #bicibús, the fun, safe mode of transport that makes going to school feel like a party.
On a cool September morning, a group of about 60 parents and children aged three to 11, on bikes and scooters, gather in the Plaça Conxita Pérez for the school run.

How to Record an Indoor Cycling Ride with Strava, whether manual or Peloton Bike, Zwift, the Expresso, etc
I really like exercising on my Elliptical trainer with the Strava app because I can stick to a schedule no matter what the weather is outside, and I can still compete with my friends.
Likewise, cycling also suffers from weather issues outside. Strava does allow you to sync data from indoor cycling into the app though, so you can still complete from your living room with your friends.
Some advanced indoor cycling trainers like Peloton bike, or cycling apps like Zwift, now have built-in Strava compatibility. So, I’ve been seeing some friends competing on virtual cycling races all around the world (from their living room).
Strava does not count indoor cycling sessions, whether manually entered or via smart trainer towards Strava challenges. Whether they are recorded manually or as Virtual Rides from a cycling app, they are still ignored when it comes to leaderboards and challenges. But it is still great to share your exercise data in interesting ways, as that social aspect helps a lot to motivate you, especially if you train on your own.
Strava as an app does a pretty good job as it has various safeguards for location data privacy, and having integration with Apple Health, Samsung Health, etc also means that Android and iOS users can compete with each other across the restrictions of their own operating systems.

Aurora 23 will be the largest #military #exercise in #Sweden in 30 years. 26,000 people will practice how they would work if Sweden were attacked by a foreign power. In addition to the Swedish army, navy, air force and home guard, soldiers from 13 countries participate.700 #US #Marines will be transported via Jämtland and Härjedalen. Around the country, fighter jets will take off from their air bases, and combat boats and corvettes will go around the coasts.

intriguing bits about #exercise and neurogenesis and #learning and mood regulation etc.
... gets me wondering about several of those tubby folk who get no exercise, and seemed more susceptable to the corporate terror propaganda, and stubborn to entertain and explore new information. (love you guys. that's not an attack. it's compassion and concern.)
... maybe a #sauna may be a help. (or a hot bath) (or cold) (or some weight training / push-ups / squats...)
"thanks" to one of my many #autoimmune conditions i've been a long time frequent hot-heater hugger... which i wonder if may have been helping my mood more than i realised. which is handy while been so crippled and struggling to do any physical exercises.
... and seen the stuff about "sitting is the new smoking" ? it's getting a fresh re-airing now. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sitting+is+the+new+smoking&sp=CAI%253D
(ps, is tubby better (less offensive) than obese? y'know, perhaps, inflamed pitta dosha, especially.)
ps, also as i replied on irc to an earlier portion of it:
