"Kellogg’s is waging a war here over Tigre Toño and Sam el TucĂĄn.

A 2019 policy requires companies that make unhealthy foods to include warning labels on the front of any boxes they sell in Mexico to educate consumers about things like excess sugar and fat. Any food with a warning label — like Kellogg’s Fruit Loops or its Frosted Flakes, which typically contain more than 37 grams of added sugar in a 100-gram serving — is also banned from including a mascot on its packaging."

Finally found sugar free juice syrup in France!

I have been looking for them everywhere and only place selling them are the speciality shops and cost 3x the ones with sugar. These were "only" 2x but at least I can have juice at home.

#Diabetes

Prototype sugar-powered teabag-like implant successfully manages type 1 diabetes in mice

Diagram of a mouse illustrating how a diabetes implant system would work
The fuel cell itself, which resembles a teabag that’s slightly larger than a fingernail, is covered in a nonwoven fabric and coated with alginate, an algae-derived product used widely in biomedicine because of its high degree of biocompatibility. When implanted under the skin, the cell’s alginate soaks up body fluid, allowing glucose to permeate the surface and flow into the power centre.

Overall, the two components provide a self-regulating circuit. When the fuel cell powered by glucose senses excess blood sugar, it powers up. This then stimulates the beta cells to produce and secrete insulin. As blood sugar levels dip, it trips a threshold sensor in the fuel cell, so it powers down, in turn stopping the insulin production and release.

This self-sustained circuit could also produce enough power to communicate with a device such as a smartphone, which allows for monitoring and adjusting, and even has potential for remote access for medical intervention.

Well, this looks promising, so we’ll have to see if it actually becomes a reality and available for use.

The price of ‘sugar free’: are sweeteners as harmless as we thought?

Elinav’s findings on sucralose and saccharin go against decades of public health orthodoxy, which says artificial sweeteners have no effect on blood sugar. What’s more, all four sweeteners tested were found to alter the human microbiome – bacteria in the gut – in ways associated with high blood sugar. These changes were not seen in the control groups. What this tells us, Spector explained, is that none of these sweeteners are “inert” in the human body, as was previously thought. “They do affect our gut microbes, even stevia, which may be the best of a bad lot,” said Spector.

Metformin is a very commonly used drug used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. The latest NHS guidelines (1) point out that this can commonly lead to reduced vitamin B12 levels, which than can lead to many neurological problems, including fatigue, lethargy, pins and needles (paraesthesia), changes in the way that you walk and move around, irritability and depression (2).

If you take metformin, please pay attention to see if you experience these symptoms, and consider having vitamin B12 injections to help. If you suffer from diabetes type 2, make life style changes, specifically a low carb diet, regular exercise and managing stress. In many cases, diabetes type 2 can be reversed and the patient symptom free without medication. This may not be possible in all cases, but it is always worth a try.
