UltraRAM Breakthrough Brings New Memory and Storage Tech to Silicon, claiming DRAM-like speeds and non-volatility for a thousand years

Bild/Foto
Scientists from the Physics and Engineering Department of the UK’s Lancaster University have published a paper detailing a breakthrough in the mass production of UltraRAM. Researchers have pondered over this novel memory type for several years due to its highly attractive qualities, and the latest breakthrough means that mass production on silicon wafers could be within sight. UltraRAM is described as a memory technology which “combines the non-volatility of a data storage memory, like flash, with the speed, energy-efficiency, and endurance of a working memory, like DRAM.”

The researchers claim that the latest incarnation on silicon outperforms the technology as tested on Gallium Arsenide semiconductor wafers.

However, we have already seen some similarly heralded ideas fall by the wayside; resistive RAM, magnetoresistive RAM, and phase-change memory, haven’t made the impact that some initial reports foresaw. And of course, the price-point will be critical.

Goodbye expensive screen repairs — Researchers build 3D printer that can make OLED displays

Researchers from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities have developed a customised 3D printer capable of fully printing a flexible OLED display. Their study was recently published in Science Advances, a peer-reviewed scientific journal from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The team claims their findings could result in low-cost OLED displays in the future that could be widely produced using 3D printers by anyone at home instead of by technicians in microfabrication facilities.

“The nice part about our research is that the manufacturing is all built-in, so we’re not talking 20 years out with some ‘pie in the sky’ vision,” explained Michel Alpine, senior author of the study.

Machine Learning Shushes Stressed Dogs - This DIY Project May Succeed Where Other Remedies Have Failed

Clairette (the dog) has had a particularly difficult time adapting to her friends leaving every day, but thankfully her human (Nathaniel Felleke) was able to come up with a clever solution. He trained a TinyML neural net to detect when she barked and used and Arduino to play a sound byte to sooth her. The sound bytes in question are recordings of Nathaniel’s mom either praising or scolding the dog, and as you can see from the video below, they seem to work quite well.

While machine learning may sound like a bit of an extreme solution to curb your dog’s barking, it’s certainly innovative, and even appears to have been successful.

If there’s one demographic that has benefited from people being stuck at home during Covid lockdowns, it would be dogs. Having their humans around 24/7 meant more belly rubs, more table scrap…
