Archive.org, one of the only entities to attempt to preserve the entire history of the World Wide Web and much of the broader Internet, was recently compromised in a hack that revealed data on roughly 31 million users.

archive.org is not loading right now.

Appeals court seems lost on how Internet Archive harms publishers

Appeals court decision potentially reversing publishers' suit may come this fall.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/06/appeals-court-seems-lost-on-how-internet-archive-harms-publishers/

According to Gratz, most of the questions for IA focused on "how to think about the situation where a particular book is available" from the open library and also available as an ebook that a library can license. Judges said they did not know how to think about "a situation where the publishers just haven't come forward with any data showing that this has an impact," Gratz said.

Publishers Secure Widespread Support in Landmark Copyright Battle With Internet Archive

https://torrentfreak.com/publishers-secure-widespread-support-in-landmark-copyright-battle-with-internet-archive-240324/

Major book publishers continue their legal crusade against Internet Archive's scan-and-lend library, hoping to shut it down for good. IA's appeal previously received support from authors and copyright scholars. The publishers, however, have some heavyweight backers too. New amicus briefs are signed by former U.S. politicians, former judges, and legal scholars. Industry groups such as the MPA and RIAA also rally behind the publishers.

Remember that lawsuit to destroy the Internet Archive?

If public libraries didn't already exist, publishers would never allow them.

It's pretty much the same for free public education. If it didn't already exist, it would never be allowed.

The biggest problem with targeted ads is that they don't work.

When those who pay for these ads realize it, the whole industry will crash.

This is the track I followed. First I read this by Cory. https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/22/mesmer-2-point-oh/#thanks-obama

That led to this. https://www.wired.com/story/ad-tech-could-be-the-next-internet-bubble/

And that led me to download the book, Subprime Attention Crisis by Tim Hwang. I also found this unnecessarily large book talk at the Internet Archive. https://archive.org/download/subprime-attention-crisis/subprime-attention-crisis.mp4 I've started listening to this. I'll listen some more later.

I'll get to the book soon.

BitTorrent blocking: TorGuard VPN’s firewall nixes torrents on US servers

Multiple VPNs have blocked BitTorrent to settle piracy lawsuits from movie companies.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/03/torguard-vpn-blocks-bittorrent-on-us-servers-to-settle-piracy-lawsuit/

TorGuard says it operates VPN servers in 50 countries, so its users can presumably still use BitTorrent by connecting to a non-US server. Though torrenting is widely used for piracy, the peer-to-peer technology is also used for the legal distribution of files such as Linux ISOs and many types of content on the Internet Archive.

Lesson: Stay (virtually) outside the USA.
