The #messenger #Telegram is gaining popularity, but is Telegram an option for you?

The protesters in #HongKong or the Belarusian #opposition use it but also #QAnon or drug dealers.

You can find out whether the messenger is suitable for you by answering these #questions:

  1. Did you use a mobile number that is not traceable to you to sign up?
  2. Do you know how to avoid that other users can see your mobile number?
  3. Do you know how to prevent strangers from adding you to any groups?
  4. Did you use your real first and last name when registering and wrote your real address in the description to your profile?
  5. Do you know what are the outstanding unique features of Telegram?
  6. Why are these features not copied from #WhatsApp?
  7. Do you know how to start an encrypted #chat?
  8. Do you use the encrypted chat with all your friends?
  9. Do you know how to report suspicious activity and that probably nothing will happen?

10. Have you installed the messenger from #FDroid?

(The further questions are only for suspected terrorists or freedom fighters.)

  1. Do you know how the police can still trace your untraceable mobile number back to you even if you have switched it to hidden?
  2. Do you know that probably only the cannon fodder is activated here and really secure communication takes place elsewhere?
  3. Do you know how to get around a ban by your #government?
  4. Do you know how to program a bot to make congressmen afraid?
  5. Do you know how to set up a bridge to communicate with other more secure messengers from Telegram?

16. Have you uploaded your manifesto yet?

(Last questions are for @All.)

  1. How to start an encrypted chat with the desktop application?
  2. Great questions but where are the answers?

Please post your score in the comments. For each answered question you get one point.

Be alerted for price changes on websites for Black Friday Specials with Distill Web Monitor or similar browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox or Opera

Whether it is for alerting to Black Friday or other online specials, competitions, or availability of tickets, these types of extensions can be very useful.

Distill Web Monitor is not the only one out there, but it seems to be an overwhelming favourite on the Chrome store with over 200,000 installs, and an average rating of 4.6/5.0 stars. It allows for some really flexible monitoring as well as having many options for alerts.

The free version does have some limitations, especially for the cloud version (no browser needs to be active), but if you run the alerts on your local browser you can have up to 25 running, with alerts set down to 5 seconds. Mobile app versions are only for paid services.

Visualping is another very popular service, but it has a lot more restrictions on the free plan. Thing is, when you get down to hour and minute interval monitoring, many services charge for that as a cloud service. I still fondly remember the Check&Get application that you could install in the early 2000's that used to do this. However, there is also a self-hosted open-source option called changedetection.io.

ChangeDetection.io - Self-hosted open source web page monitoring, notification and change detection

Know when web pages change! Stay on top of new information! Live your data-life pro-actively instead of re-actively, do not rely on manipulative social media for consuming important information.

Maybe you need to be notified the moment a government or company web page changes, or possibly you're waiting for an item to go on sale.

This can be installed and run on a Raspberry Pi at home, or installed quickly as a Docker image.

See GitHub - dgtlmoon/changedetection.io: changedetection.io - The best and simplest self-hosted open source website change detection monitoring and notification service. An alternative to Visualping, Watchtower etc. Designed for simplicity - the main goal is to simply monitor which websites had a text change. Open source web page change detection - Now also includes JSON API change detection and monitoring support!

How much is coronavirus spreading under the radar?

(Nature) 3-13-2020

...A telltale sign of covert transmission in communities is finding a few confirmed but unrelated cases, with no recent history of international travel. That means these cases are connected through a hidden web of infections. The ideal way to know how many people in a community have had coronavirus infections , [Jeremy] Farrar says, is to collect blood samples from people in every age group, looking for antibodies against the coronavirus, which show that someone has previously been infected. Data from such serology studies, as they are called, can then be used to accurately determine rates of fatality and transmission. But such studies take time. “We need to make policy decisions and clinical decisions now,” Farrar says. “You can’t say, ‘Let’s wait a month until we have the data.’”

Can scientists estimate the size of an outbreak without widespread testing?

Yes. Experts say that they compare various lines of evidence. One estimate begins with the number of deaths in an area. Farrar calls this a “guesstimate” because each of the variables researchers are using right now are subject to change, introducing uncertainty at each step in the calculation. However, it goes something like this: Data from China suggest that about three weeks passes between when a person feels sick and dies from COVID-19. And if you assume a case fatality rate of roughly 1%, a back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that each death represents about 100 cases in the first week. Right now, he adds, you can expect the epidemic to double each week if those cases aren’t identified and isolated — bringing the estimate to 400 at the time of death. Because the error bars on each of these variables are large, epidemiologists check their figures against further information....

What works in education? Are there any clear signs of effective outcomes measures?

I've touched on education in a few posts (see "Backstory" below), with a general them of "we're not going to educate our way out of this mess. I'm looking in particular for pointers on school quality and what does (and doesn't) work in improving the results of educational systems. I'm looking for both direct responses and pointers to theory / studies / literature on educational quality.

Briefly:

  • Is there any indication of methods, environments, or other interventions which improve educational outcomes persistently and over time?...
