How Unparalleled #RDP #Monitoring Reveal Attackers’ Tradecraft

Source: https://www.gosecure.net/blog/2023/08/09/how-unparalleled-rdp-monitoring-reveal-attackers-tradecraft/

We ran them for three years and accumulated over 190 million events, including 100 hours of video footage, 470 files collected from threat actors, and more than 20,000 RDP captures.

The data collected allowed the study of attackers’ behavior, which was used to classify attackers into different groups.

Be careful there is high danger because the following URI goes to #YouTube. Click here only if you are aware of the #danger and effects and have taken appropriate countermeasures for your own protection. Otherwise you will play directly into the hands of the exploitation system. I strongly advise against using YouTube without appropriate protection.

Why are #digital opportunities leading to the Orwellian #surveillance state?

It is much cheaper to query a surveillance #database and #arrest all the suspicious #people in it than good old time-consuming #police #investigations. Today's #technology enables almost seamless #monitoring at neuralgic points. In the past, this could only be dreamed of, and the staff alone was not enough to read every letter. Today, an #AI can take over this task and immediately calculate the potential #danger. Of course, bad mistakes happen, but as long as on average more dangerous people are recognized and arrested at an early stage, it is not important for the state. After all, everyone can make use of the possibilities offered by the rule of #law and, in case of doubt, will be released again. Unless, of course, he commits suicide like #AaronSchwartz. Particularly resistant dissidents are tortured to death like #Assange or chased into exile like #Snowden. #Security comes at a price, and it's the security that counts, especially in this uncertain, latent crisis situation. Welcome to the year 1984!

Monitorix – A Comprehensive Open Source Linux System and Network Monitoring Tool

Bild/Foto
Monitorix is an open-source, free, and most powerful lightweight tool designed to monitor system and network resources in Linux. It regularly collects system and network data and displays the information in graphs using its own web interface (which listens on the port 8080/TCP).

Monitorix allows for monitoring overall system performance and also helps in detecting bottlenecks, failures, unwanted long response times, and other abnormal activities.

It contains generally two programs: a collector, called monitorix, which is a Perl daemon that is started automatically like any other system service, and a CGI script called monitorix.cgi. It is written in Perl language and licensed under the terms of GNU (General Public License) as published by the FSP (Free Software Foundation). It uses RRDtool to generate graphs and display them using the web interface.

Of course, the test is with the eating of the pudding, and how many resources it will chew itself. Glances appears to have fewer features and no nice graphs, yet can chew a good 10% of CPU resources at times. Monitorix certainly also focusses on Linux servers as well with the Apache, Fail2ban, MySQL, etc stats.
