Russian POWs on their capture in Kursk Oblast: Commanders just disappeared

Their experience of the first days of the Ukrainian incursion shares common themes

  • Chaotic communication
  • Commanders disappearing
  • Total lack of preparedness

On Aug. 6 our outpost was hit by three rockets, which we later found out were HIMARS, said Nikolai. “Two rockets hit the command center, killing two conscripts and two officers. Another rocket landed close to our dugout, collapsing it partially, making it unsuitable for further shelter.”

All of the POWs interviewed by the Kyiv Independent said that they were surprised at the treatment they received in captivity, which went against Russian propaganda narratives saying they would be tortured or killed.

According to the deputy head of the facility, the POWs receive meals three times a day and tea twice, though the lack of a cigarette ration can be painful for them.

Ukrainian forces storm penal colony in #Kursk Oblast where Ukrainian prisoners were held

The seizure of the penal colony will be an important step in documenting war crimes committed by Russia against prisoners of war, human rights activists said.

Subsequently, the organization found that female prisoners were also taken to the women's penal colony in Malaya Loknya, which is designed to hold over 200 people. In the fall of 2022, more than 50 captured military and civilian women were held there, the Media Initiative for Human Rights said.

The #HumanRights organization documented the testimonies of several prisoners held in this colony. They mentioned that physical force and humiliation were used against them, which led to significant health problems.

Ukraine captures over 100 Russian, Chechen soldiers in a day in Kursk Oblast

As part of Ukraine's cross-border incursion into neighboring #Kursk Oblast, special forces from the SBU carried out an operation on a #Russian military base on Aug. 14 that resulted in the largest single capture of Russian troops so far in the war, according to the source.

The prisoners of war (POWs) belong to the 144th Guards Motor Rifle Division and the #Akhmat unit, a #Chechen group of forces that fights for Russia, the source said.

The source in the #SBU described the base in Kursk Oblast as a "sprawling, concrete, and well-fortified company stronghold," which had facilities including personnel quarters, a canteen, and an armory.

Many Russian soldiers #captured in Kursk Oblast battles, Ukraine's state project claims

Among the captives are both conscripts and contract soldiers, according to "Khochu nayti," the project launched in January 2024 by Ukraine's military intelligence for relatives of the #Russian military captured in Ukraine.

"There is also information about the #dead whose bodies were not taken away by their comrades-in-arms during the retreat," the statement read.

The project published drone footage of what it presented as 32 captured Russian soldiers, adding that eight more did not fit into the frame. The Telegram post did not specify whether this was the overall number of Russian troops captured so far

UN reports over 95% of Ukrainian prisoners of war were tortured in Russia

#Ukrainian prisoners of war are #tortured from the very first interrogation. They are beaten with metal rods and sticks, stripped naked and severely electrocuted. This is horrible. This is undoubtedly the worst thing I’ve seen in 20 years of my career while visiting the POWs on behalf of the UN.

This happened to more than 95% of Ukrainian POWs. These are #WarCrimes

Ombudsman appeals to UN, Red Cross over alleged #execution of Ukrainian POW by Russia

A photo, which is circulating on social media, shows the body of a person with his head and limbs cut off. It is unknown when the photo was taken. The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify it.

Reports of Ukrainian #POWs being #tortured or #killed while in Russian captivity have been surfacing since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. As of June, the Prosecutor General's Office said 28 criminal investigations were underway regarding the execution of 62 Ukrainian POWs.

"This is not just a violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, this is the behavior of monsters," Lubinets said.

The ombudsman asked international organizations to record another human rights violation by Russia and called on Ukraine's law enforcement to verify the identity of the killed person and the fact of the crime.

#Russian occupiers likely cut off Ukrainian prisoner's limbs and head – Ukraine's #HumanRights Commissioner

A photo has been posted online that appears to show the body of a Ukrainian prisoner whose head and limbs have been cut off by the Russians.

This isn’t just a violation of the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War – it’s an absolutely monstrous act. I would like to note that international humanitarian law stipulates that prisoners of war may not be tortured, abused, or killed."

2 years after Ukrainian POWs killed in Olenivka camp explosion, no one prosecuted

Ukrainian authorities have called the #Olenivka attack a deliberate Russian war crime, saying #Russia either hit the prison with artillery or blew it up from inside.

Kyiv said that days before the attack, Russians deliberately put Ukrainian members of the Azov Regiment, who were captured in Mariupol and were awaiting a prisoner exchange, to a separate part of the prison building that was later destroyed in the explosion.

BULGARIAN BRUTALITY.
PRISON CAMP HORRORS.
[FROM G. Ward Price.]

The Serbian prisoners-of-war camp on
the outskirts of Sofia is terrible evidence
of that hatred between Bulgarian and
Serbian, which runs like a poison through
the whole system of the Balkans. A mile
from Sofia, near the main road to

Radomir, is a muddy compound about
three acres in extent, surrounded by barb-
ed wire. In this pen are 103,000 Serbians
of all ages, together with 600 Greek civi-
lians, carried off from Sepres and Druina,
a smaller body of Russians, and a detach-
ment of French. The French were lodged
in a few whitewashed mud-huts which the
compound contains. The greater major-
ity of the Serbians have lain out in the
open day and night, in wind and rain,
summer and winter, many of them for
three whole years of captivity, They have
had no blankets or protection of any
kind, and at night pack their wretched
bodies close together for warmth like a
herd of animals. Their food is 1lb., of
dark bread a day. Their so-called soup,
which they were preparing while I was
there, is just a cauldron of hot water,
with a dozen maize-pods in it. For drink-
ing and washing water in this enclosure
there is a solitary trickle from one small
tap. Thirsty men wait two hours to get
near it.

Ten Serbians had died during the night
before I went there. In the morning the
Bulgarians put their bodies into a cart
and carried them away. An hour later
the same cart returned bringing the day's
bread ration. When a man can no longer
stand, his friends carry him into one of
the verminous little huts. There he lies
until he is dead, and next morning the
bread cart carries his carcase away.
Three fresh bodies were on the ground
when I reached the camp at ten o'clock,
and I was taken to see the little earth-
floored cabin which with grim irony is
called the "hospital.” There were five
Serbians in it -four just frames of skin
and bone. The fifth man lay stretched
on his back on the bare ground. His eyes
were glazed and fixed. his breath came in
quick spasms, and flies were crawling
over his face. He looked as if he had
but a few more hours of suffering to live.
“Does no one come to do anything for
these people? Have you never seen a
Bulgarian medical officer here?" I asked.
"Never," was the emphatic. reply of a
Serbian and a Greek prisoner who spoke
French.

It must be allowed to count in favour
of Serbia that all her Bulgarian prisoners
whom one has seen on the roads behind
the Serbian front were fit, as well fed as
the Allied troops themselves, and any-
thing at all but overworked. No sooner
was the misceable condition of these Ser-
bian prisoners known than the British
Army authorities took steps to do all they
could for the survivors. Doctors and
medical comforts are already in Sofia to
repair. as far as may be the terrible
scandal that lies at the very door of the
Bulgarian Governments. — Daily Tele-
graph.

Russian soldiers who executed Ukrainian POWs near Robotyne identified

A video taken in the second half of May captured Russian troops executing four surrendering Ukrainian soldiers near #Robotyne, a front-line village in the southern Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

The Ukrainian soldiers were made to lie down on their faces, after which they were shot in the back, the video shows. Ukraine's military intelligence stressed that this act constitutes a war crime.

This comes as yet another evidence of Russian war crimes committed against Ukrainian prisoners, both military and civilian, throughout the full-scale war.

Ombudsman asks UN, Red Cross to investigate videos of alleged abuses of Ukrainian #POWs

The videos which are spreading on social media show actions that violate the Geneva Conventions and should be used as further proof of Russian violations of international humanitarian law, Lubinets said in his Telegram post on June 2.

The Geneva Conventions require the humane treatment of prisoners of war.

"Unfortunately, such treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war is not an exception to the rules, but a common tactic for the occupiers,"

Russian torture of Ukrainian POWs ‘widespread and systematic,’ UN commission says

One Ukrainian soldier, who was detained and tortured by Russian authorities in several detention facilities, recounted his experience in the correctional colony in the town of Donskoy, Tula region, where he was repeatedly subjected to torture and left with broken bones, broken teeth and gangrene on an injured foot,” the report reads.

“‘I lost any hope and the will to live,’ the soldier said, adding that he had tried to kill himself but perpetrators subjected him to further beating.”

The document also highlights “incidents of rape and other sexual violence committed against women in circumstances which also amount to torture” as well as “incidents of torture with a sexualized dimension and threats of rape against male prisoners of war.”

Speaking to journalists in #Geneva after the release of the findings, the chair of the commission, Erik Møse, said: “Victims' accounts disclose relentless brutal treatment inflicting severe pain and suffering during prolonged detention, with blatant disregard for human dignity.”

The torture and execution of Ukrainian POWs has been well-documented throughout Russia’s full-scale invasion.

No Ukrainian POWs on crashed Russian Il-76 aircraft

"I can definitely tell you that our prisoners were not there," said Danilov during the interview.

A Russian Il-76 transport aircraft crashed in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on Jan. 24, which Russia claimed was transporting 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) for an exchange.

Russia has yet to provide evidence that there were any POWs on the downed aircraft.

After Russia began circulating its claims, Ukraine requested that Russia return the bodies of the killed POWs home.

Russia's government never responded to the appeal. Russia also reportedly blocked the International Committee of Red Cross from investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Russia ignores Ukraine's appeal to return bodies of POWs Moscow says are killed in Il-76 crash

After Russia said Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed in the recent Il-76 plane crash, Ukraine appealed to return the allegedly killed POWs home, Andrii Yusov, a representative of the military intelligence, said on Feb. 1.

But the Russian government has not responded to Ukraine's request, he added.

"Ukraine applied and continues to apply for the transfer of the bodies," Yusov said.

"So far, the Russian side does not agree to this. Therefore, the demand of our state to conduct an impartial international investigation remains relevant...Russia still has not confirmed the process regarding the international open investigation."

Russia currently refuses international commission to investigate Il-76 crash

An international commission is needed to establish the cause of the Russian Il-76 transport plane's crash, but Moscow currently rejects this option

Russia has alleged that the military aircraft that crashed in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on Jan. 24 was destroyed by Ukrainian forces and that it was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs).

Ukraine has called Russia's narrative into question and demanded an international investigation.

"Concerning specific causes of the plane's crash, the request to create an international commission is logical and well-founded," Yusov said. Such an investigation could examine the wreckage of the plane and uncover its black box, he noted.

"At the moment, as we hear, Russia rejects the possibility of such a commission."

Ombudsman confirms Russia used Ukrainian POWs as human shields

"We managed to establish that the video is definitely not edited and it is real. We understand where it was recorded and by whom," Ombudsman Lubinets said in a TV interview. "In advance, we even have an idea as to which of the servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces committed this crime."

The video in question surfaced on Dec. 14, and was republished by RFE/RL, depicting what appeared to be unarmed Ukrainian POWs being forced to walk at gunpoint toward Ukrainian lines. Journalists from RFE/RL said they managed to pinpoint the time and place of the incident but did not share it at the request of the Ukrainian military.

Lubinets had previously said that the practice may be systematic among Russian troops. There have been previous reports that Russian troops forced POWs to walk into minefields, he said.

This is one more example of desperation and the true face of Zelensky.

He and his government are not bound butly any agreement and the fact they taking back Nazi leaders of the Azov Battalion who was released by Russia in prison exchange with agreement that those troops would stay out of Ukraine until the end of the war.

I am sure the NATO boot lickers and pro Ukraine folks have a good excuse for it and will defend it to death and attack me for being "pro Putin", since those people don't understand the difference being anti war and anti Nazi with pro Putin (like Pro Saddam, pro Taliban and all other ones before that).
