Social mapping platform Atly launches with $18M to be a Reddit for real-world locations… But is there place in the market for more such apps?

Bild/Foto
Founded out of Israel in 2019, Atly claims to be creating the “next social paradigm for mapping and discovering places to go.” It’s all about finding new restaurants, hiking trails, bike rental places, gluten-free eateries, record stores, rooftop bars, free public toilets, and all the rest.

Through the web or mobile app, users can create their own theme-specific community, after which they become the manager for that community, including setting rules for engagement and permissions around what other users can do in that community.

According to Maslansky, Atly is not generating any revenue itself yet, but some of its users are already earning by “gating their community” to paid members.

It’s true that Google is rather slow nowadays in developing exciting new features (just look at far ahead Waze was on that front, so they got bought out), but there is also a lot to be said about “where most people are”. That “where” is often the “why” which stops users migrating off to a new service, because their contacts are all in one place and there is a mass of useful information already available. So certainly, in this regard Google Maps has pretty good reviews, ratings, photos, and other info (as does Yelp). But possibly Atly will appeal to non-Google Map users still.

But what Atly is hoping will differentiate it, is a truly more social aspect, versus just a map with lots of reviews just posted to it. The Reddit concept has worked well, but it has no geolocation / mapping type organisation.

Razzie Awards: Tom Hanks, 'Blonde,' 'Morbius' lead nominations for worst of the year

By: Patrick Ryan, USA TODAY

Morbin' Time is over, folks.

After horrid reviews and a box-office bloodbath, Jared Leto's vampiric antihero "Morbius" got another nail in the coffin with Monday's Razzie Awards announcement, earning five nominations including worst picture and worst actor (Leto).

But the memeable Marvel spinoff was hardly the Razzies' most hated film of last year. That would be Netflix's "Blonde," a historical fiction drama about Marilyn Monroe (played by Ana de Armas) that polarized critics with its gratuitous nudity, sexual violence and seemingly anti-abortion stance. The film topped the nominations with eight, including worst picture, worst director (Andrew Dominik) and worst screenplay.

De Armas, who has picked up Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nods for her performance, was excluded from the worst actress lineup.

'Blonde' fact-check: Did Marilyn Monroe really have a threesome with Charlie Chaplin's son?

Tom Hanks, meanwhile, wasn't so lucky. The A-lister received nominations for worst actor ("Disney's Pinocchio," playing Geppetto in a live-action remake) and worst supporting actor ("Elvis," portraying Colonel Tom Parker opposite Austin Butler's Presley). The two-time Oscar winner was also recognized in the worst screen couple category, along with his facial prosthetics and "ludicrous" accent in "Elvis."

Other stars to incur the Razzies' wrath were Diane Keaton ("Mack & Rita"), Penelope Cruz ("The 355"), Sylvester Stallone ("Samaritan") and Colson Baker, better known by his stage name Machine Gun Kelly ("Good Mourning"). Baker's pal Pete Davidson also picked up two worst performance nominations for "Good Mourning" and "Marmaduke."

The Golden Raspberry Awards – or Razzies for short – are voted on by roughly 1,000 members (a mix of moviegoers and those in the film industry), who pick what they deem the most dreadful that cinema has to offer. Now in its 43rd year, the show will announce its "winners" on March 11, the night before the Oscars.

Attention, Oscars! We hope these 10 brilliant performances feel the love at Academy Awards

The Strangely Beautiful Experience of Google Reviews - Longreads

But in reality, it’s not always like that. Most of the time, reviews alternate between angry, comically banal, and downright bizarre. One star for Laurie’s Gentle Pet Grooming in Terrebonne, Oregon: “She butchered my pomeranian I would not recommend.” One star for a Walmart in Columbia, Kentucky: “I don’t go in Walmart stores, my husband went in. I hate Walmart.” Two stars for the New Hope Baptist Church in Five Points, Alabama: “Can’t really say …. car broke down and had to replace a radiator hose in the parking lot.”

Very fun read!
