So my car is paid off. Time to rip out the horrifically annoying touchscreen and replace it with real mechanical pushbuttons. No more eyes off the road to play a video game of pop-ups and moving controls on a virtual screen that cannot be seen during daylight or in traffic.

What I have in my hands is a familiar automotive control from the 1980's from my beloved Honda Accord when ergonomics peaked.

I may replace the area left over with a small touchscreen with an embedded #Linux that I'll compile with all the features I want, not a marketing contractor that never drove a car in their life before. As a bonus, all the privacy stealing telemetry of #SirusXM and their several hundred third party partners like #Carfax and #LexisNexis and my insurance will no longer mysteriously email me with my current mileage and what service I need. This car is mine now, not a #privacy nightmare.

I may keep this car for many more years. I plan on converting it to full electric after I finish this. And use my own customizable touchscreen to experiment with new features before committing them to physical buttons.

FIRST OPEN LETTER ON THE WHOā€™s PANDEMIC TREATY

#StopTheTreaty

TO: People throughout the world. Governments, presidents, health ministers. Independent media

TO: WHO via World Health Assembly, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus, Dr Soumya Swaminathan

TO: United Nations via Antonio Guterres, Liu Zhenmin, Elliott Harris, Maria-Francesca Spatolisano

The World Council for Health (WCH), a coalition of scientists, doctors, lawyers, and civil society advocacy organizations, opposes the World Health Organisation (WHO)ā€™s moves to implement a power grab in the form of a global pandemic agreement, while the worldā€™s attention is diverted by the latest crisis.

The proposed WHO agreement is unnecessary, and is a threat to sovereignty and inalienable rights. It increases the WHOā€™s suffocating power to declare unjustified pandemics, impose dehumanizing lockdowns, and enforce expensive, unsafe, and ineffective treatments against the will of the people.

The WCH believes that the people have a right to participate in any agreement that affects their lives, livelihoods, and well-being. However, the WHO has not engaged in a process of public participation, which is evidence that its priority is capturing more power for itself and its corporate accomplices, than serving the interests of the people. Without an unbiased democratic process, any agreement by the WHO, acting via the United Nations, will be unlawful, illegitimate, and invalid.

Historically, the WHO leadership has failed the people. Among many examples, it approved the injurious H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine for a controversially declared pandemic. Equally, the WHO failed during the Covid-19 chapter as it encouraged lockdowns, suppressed early preventive treatments, and recommended product interventions that have proven to be neither safe nor effective.

The WHO cannot be allowed to control the worldā€™s health agenda, nor enforce biosurveillance. While it receives funding from public sources belonging to the people, it is caught in a perpetual conflict of interest because it also receives substantial funding from private interests that use their contributions to influence and profit from WHO decisions and mandates. For example, the Gates Foundation and the Gates-funded GAVI vaccine promotion alliance, contribute over $1 billion a year.
Call to Action

WCH partners, from Australia to Zimbabwe, stand against this costly abuse of power and assert the sovereign right of people to make their own decisions, over and above what their representatives may want. We urge everyone to approach credible government representatives, political parties, trade unions, civil society groups, professionals, public figures, and independent media to:

  1. Raise awareness about the implications of the proposed global pandemic agreement;
  2. Call for national campaigns that protect natural law and democratic constitutions;
  3. Join credible civil society coalitions such as the World Council for Health.

We also encourage everyone to learn more about principles, accords, conventions, and treaties that protect the rights of men, women, and children. These include the Siracusa Principles in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which provide legal standards to protect rights.

Leading up to the WHOā€™s 77th World Health Assembly in 2024, where the WHO intends to confirm their pandemic agreement, the WCH will continue to raise awareness through campaigning against this undemocratic move. For information about the WCHā€™s past work on this issue, follow these links to the WCH Townhall on the pandemic plan, and see these articles on the subject.

Logitechā€™s Lift is a vertical mouse thatā€™s ā€˜easierā€™ to grasp

Bild/Foto
With shockingly tall stature and non-traditional curves, vertical mice require some adjustment to use. But the purported payoff, if youā€™re to believe mouse-makers, is greater arm, wrist, and hand comfort due to a more natural hand position.

The Lift puts your hand at a 57-degree angle with the desk and in a handshake-like position. There isnā€™t hard evidence proving that a vertical mouse can alleviate issues like carpal tunnel syndrome or repetitive strain injury (RSI). Logitech is also careful not to make any strong promises beyond stating the mouse ā€œtakes pressure off the wrist while promoting a more natural forearm posture throughout the day.ā€

The point is, your hand does have to rest on something. Right now, for my ā€œhorizontalā€ mouse, my wrist rests about 15 to 20 degrees, on a cushioned pad projecting up from the mouse pad. To move my current mouse, I just twist my wrist joint left or right without moving my arm. So whether one actually needs a vertical mouse, or just better wrist support with a current mouse, really remains to be seen.

"...advanced forms of biological warfare that can ā€œtargetā€ specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool." - Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century.

"One of the PNAC's most influential publications was a 90-page report titled Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century. Citing the PNAC's 1997 Statement of Principles, Rebuilding America's Defenses asserted that the United States should "seek to preserve and extend its position of global leadership" by "maintaining the preeminence of U.S. military forces." The report's primary author was Giselle Donnelly, then going by the first name Thomas. Donald Kagan and Gary Schmitt are credited as project chairmen. It also lists the names of 27 other participants who contributed papers or attended meetings related to the production of the report, six of whom subsequently assumed key defense and foreign policy positions in the Bush administration"

"The Project for the New American Century (PNAC) was a neoconservative think tank based in Washington, D.C. that focused on United States foreign policy. It was established as a non-profit educational organization in 1997, and founded by William Kristol and Robert Kagan. PNAC's stated goal was "to promote American global leadership." The organization stated that "American leadership is good both for America and for the world," and sought to build support for "a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity."

Of the twenty-five people who signed PNAC's founding statement of principles, ten went on to serve in the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush, including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz. Observers such as Irwin Stelzer and Dave Grondin have suggested that the PNAC played a key role in shaping the foreign policy of the Bush Administration, particularly in building support for the Iraq War."

Pocket issues: Tagging, recents vs. alpha sort, 7.56.0.0 Android

Iā€™m using the GetPocket Android app on an Android 10 e-ink device, the Onyx BOOX Max Lumi.

Pocket version is 7.56.0.0

As of a few updates ago, behaviour and functionality of article tagging has changed with regards to how many alpha-sorted vs. recently-used tags are presented, both when tagging is initiated and during incremental search as a specific tag name is spelled out.

Iā€™m not sure precisely when this happened as there does not seem to be a readily-evident public release history of the GetPocket Android application, which is disappointing.

(Per Wesley / Dread Pirate Roberts, Iā€™ve gotten used to disappointment.)

ā€¦ oh, wait, APK mirror does show this ā€” 7.550.0 was released 2 Feb 2022, 7.54.0.0 on 16 Jan 2022. I believe the change hit with 7.54.0.0. Changelogs for both indicate ā€œminor fixes and improvementsā€. This is a poor release notice practice, for what itā€™s worth.

Up until a month or two ago, when initiating or entering tags, a large portion of the listed tags were recently-entered. As Iā€™m often tagging a set of articles based on a similar topic or set of topics, this was useful and greatly speeded up tagging. As of the recent change, 2ā€“3 app updates back, Iā€™m seeing only 3 recent suggestions.

And as I spell out tags, Iā€™m finding that the suggestions are similarly alpha-sorted rather than recent-sorted. As one of the tagging conventions Iā€™ve adopted has been to enter a filed-on date ā€œfiled: 2022-03-21ā€ for example), this means re-typing that entry each time Iā€™m filing an article on a given date.

PLEASE INCREASE THE NUMBER OF RECENTLY-USED TAGS AND LIST INCREMENTAL-SEARCH TAGS ON THE BASIS OF RECENT OR PREFERABLY: FREQUENT USE.

The ergonomics of this subtle change are dramatic and bad.

Thank you.

Have You Been Holding Your Phone Wrong This Whole Time? The way you hold your phone could be damaging your thumb, pinkie, or forearm nerves

Bild/Foto
Quick, how do you hold your phone? Is the bottom of it resting on your pinkie, while you cradle the back with your index, middle, and ring fingers, and your thumb does all the scrolling? Alas, like the many other seemingly easy, intuitive things we do, it is wrong.

While the one-handed claw is seemingly the most convenient way to grip your device, over prolonged periods of time, it could be doing damage to your wrist and aggravating your ulnar nerveā€”among other issues.

At first, I thought this was the old iPhone antenna issue šŸ˜‰ but I have been noticing if I do a longer session at the end of the day, my pinkie gets a bit sore and I have to shift position. It may well be good to be more conscious about this issue, especially if you use your phone a lot. Maybe this is a good case for slightly thicker phones with more battery capacity, or least more ergonomic phones, instead of just smaller and smaller all the time.

Delux M618 / J-Tech Digital scroll endurance : an affordable ergonomic wireless vertical mouse that just works in GNU/Linux

The Delux M618 or M618GX ergonomic vertical mouse is a very simple, comfortable yet affordable wireless device that just works with GNU/Linux (I used Debian and Ubuntu), as expected.

While improving my work-at-home setup I upgraded to an ergonomic vertical mouse following a recommendation from a colleague that specializes in office ergonomics.

Itā€™s taken a couple of weeks to adjust to it but I love it ! I am considering buying another to bring with me when leaving home and working elsewhere. Even if itā€™s a bit bigger than a regular mouse, I think itā€™s worth it.

The battery life is good (still running after 3 months), the small USB receiver is not compatible with anything else but that was expected. Itā€™s sitting permanently on a KVM to be shared with other systems so I donā€™t mind.

Features :

  • Special curve backside, thumb groove, delicate buttons layout and anti-skid rubber coasting
  • 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity
  • On/Off button, 2 AAA batteries required
  • 6 Buttons, including a button to adjust DPI (800/1000/1600)
  • Removable Wrist Rest

This mouse is also sold under the J-Tech Digital scroll endurance brand.

Button mapping

Thereā€™s nothing special to do regarding buttton mapping. Here is the detailed information about each button functionality as expected in Windows ā€“ it matches the behavior in GNU/Linux (I use Debian and Ubuntu) :
