Hospital admissions for waterborne diseases in England up 60%, report shows

The analysis follows widespread anger after record sewage spills were revealed this week. Environment Agency data showed that raw #sewage was discharged for more than 3.6m hours into rivers and seas last year – a 129% increase on the previous 12 months.

Increased raw sewage in rivers means there is a higher risk of infections, campaigners argue, as people are more likely to come into contact with the #bacteria in human waste.

Time's nearly up for Thames Water. So let's bring it into public ownership - permanently

#ThamesWater, Britain's largest water monopoly, has been lobbying Ofwat to increase your bills, pay more dividends to its overseas investors, and try to squirm out of its way of paying fines for dumping #sewage illegally.

‘My daughter started to run a fever’: Britain’s swimmers on how sewage changed their summer | Swimming | The Guardian

“Water companies have been permitted to pollute as they please, harming coastal communities that rely on visitors and impacting those that rely on blue spaces for their mental health. The water industry and government must put people and planet before profit and reverse the shameful decline of our seas as a matter of great urgency.”

Shitstorm: French kick up a stink over UK sewage dumped in the English Channel – POLITICO

The MEPs’ intervention opens an international dimension to what has been a fierce domestic row within the U.K. this summer, with pollution warnings issued for almost 50 beaches in England and Wales after heavy rain caused sewage overflow to be diverted from overloaded drains into rivers and the sea.

Britain's privatized water industry has been blamed by campaigners for allowing the spills, while Conservative politicians have been inundated with angry correspondence after campaign material from opposition parties claimed the Tories “voted for” foul matter to be dumped in the country’s waters.

Sewage overspills result from lack of infrastructure investment, research shows | Imperial News | Imperial College London

The recent uptick in sewage overspill events is due to infrastructure not keeping up with demand, according to Imperial College London research.

The conclusion suggests other proposals for dealing with the problem – such as preventing blockages and separating rain and foul water – will not be enough to solve the issue of polluting sewage overspills.

Surprise!

Really interesting read; exposes the damage done to the environment by years of chronic Tory underfunding of public services, and runaway greed of uk water companies in pursuit of profit.
