ATLANTIS OF THE NORTH SEA
..." and hundreds of thousands have drowned."

Art. Storm Tide, by Johannes Gehrs, 1880

Poem. Trutz, Blanke Hans by Detlef von Liliencron1883

Today I drove over Rungholt,
The town went down six hundred years ago.
Trutz, Blanke Hans.”
“From the North Sea, the Murder Sea, separated from the mainland,
The Frisian islands lie at peace.
Trutz, Blanke Hans.”
“A single cry - the city is sunk,
And hundreds of thousands have drowned.
Trutz, Blanke Hans?”

Before the launch of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) in 1995, astronomers had never seen anything like this. Behold, a #solar #storm passing directly in front of the #Pleiades:

SOHO recorded this rare conjunction on May 21st. An erupting filament of magnetism near the sun's north pole propelled the #CME into space just as the #SevenSisters were passing by. #Electra, #Taygete, #Maia, #Celaeno, #Alcyone, #Sterope, and #Merope spent nearly three hours shining through the translucent solar storm.

When SOHO left Earth almost 30 years ago, it carried the first realtime #coronagraph into #space. Coronagraphs are devices that create an #artificial #eclipse, blocking the glare of the #sun to reveal nearby #stars, #planets, and #comets. No telescope on Earth could see something as faint as the Pleiades only a few degrees from the sun, but SOHO does it all the time.

Here are some photos from our #winter #snow #storm here in #Ottawa this morning. So far we have had 6 cm of snow followed by four hours of freezing drizzle, two hours of freezing rain and then eleven hours of snow so far, with about another 20 cm of snow fallen. The snow is supposed to continue until this evening. Skiing is back on!

So this is the last photo from our little #winter #storm here in #Ottawa. The total #snowfall was 26 cm (10.2 inches), but the high winds left some #snow drifts. The resulting snow was anywhere up to 76 cm (2.5 feet) deep and took a bit of shovelling to clear out.

The photo shows a nicely sharp-edged cornice on the car, about 25 cm thick (10 inches). That part brushed off easily. The snow on the ground was bit heavier.

This is dusk this evening in #Ottawa. The #winter #storm has mostly passed, but we did a walk of 2.4 km and had a look at the drifting #snow. Temperature -8°C (18 °F) and windchill -20 (-4 °F), with winds of 41 km/h gusting to 58 km/h (25 mph gusting to 36 mph)
