criminals abusing tor for malicous behavior should be blocked, right?

“50% of the attacks are leveraging the Tor anonymity service to mask their true origins”

https://thehackernews.com/2021/12/new-local-attack-vector-expands-attack.html

this could destroy the “honest” part of the network that truly exists, because it could criminalize the honest users, that want nothing but avoid a #1984 style of digital dictatorship.

or is malbehaving small group found in every nation just something that the tor network / democracy has to tolerate for the sake of freedom of speech & privacy?

There are many many attacks on Tor in order to try to break it

(just recently a probably gov sponsored group called KAX17)

“Given the number of servers run by KAX17 the calculated probability of a Tor user connecting to the Tor network through one of KAX17’s servers was 16%, there was a 35% chance they would pass through one of its middle relays, and up to 5% chance to exit through one.” (src)

This is a problem that probably can be fixed, but what about the first one?

New Release: Tor Browser 11.0.3

Tor Browser 11.0.3 is now available from the Tor Browser download page and also from our distribution directory.

https://blog.torproject.org/new-release-tor-browser-1103/

This release updates Firefox to 91.4.1esr and picks up a number of bug fixes. In particular, this release should fix various extension related and crash issues Windows users were experiencing. Additionally, Linux users especially on Ubuntu and Fedora systems were reporting fonts not properly rendering, which should be solved by this release.\
\
We used the opportunity to upgrade various components to their respective latest versions as well: Tor to 0.4.6.9, OpenSSL to 1.1.1m, and snowflake for enhanced censorship resistance.

Responding to #Tor #censorship in #Russia

source: https://blog.torproject.org/tor-censorship-in-russia/

Since December 1st, some Internet providers in Russia have started to block access to Tor. Today, we've learned that the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, #Information #Technology and Mass Media ( #Roskomnadzor ), a Russian government bureaucratic entity, is threatening to censor our main #website (torproject.org). Russia is the country with the second largest number of Tor users, with more than 300,000 daily users or 15% of all Tor users. As it seems this situation could quickly escalate to a country-wide Tor block, it's urgent that we respond to this censorship! We need your #help NOW to keep Russians connected to Tor!
