The same holds true here. If there is evidence that there was a criminal conspiracy against the United States to overturn the election, it will be admitted by way of third-party testimony and documentary or physical records. The Committee doesn’t need Bannon, Stone, Meadows, Clark or Eastman to corroborate these facts if it has their paper trails and the assistance of their many dozens of underlings.

In a Reversal, Meadows Refuses to Cooperate With Jan. 6 Inquiry

WASHINGTON — Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff under President Donald J. Trump, on Tuesday informed the committee scrutinizing the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol that he was no longer willing to cooperate with its investigation, reversing a deal he reached with the panel just last week to sit for an interview and provide documents.

“We now must decline the opportunity to appear voluntarily for a deposition,” Mr. Meadows’s lawyer, George J. Terwilliger III, wrote to the committee.

Instead, he proposed that Mr. Meadows answer questions in writing through what he called an “orderly process” that would create a “clear record of questions and related assertions of privilege.” ...

And on the slightly brighter side...

Violent seditionists are being arrested by SWAT teams and it's making them very upset

It seems the RWNJs enjoy fantasizing about using brutal tactics on their enemies (i.e., thinking people), but they become incensed when those tactics are used on them. This is a failure of counterfactual thinking common in toddlers.

It takes an advanced mind (for instance, the mind of a five year old) to realize that If it's not OK for someone to do something to you, then it's not OK for you to do it to them.

The American right wing has been conditioned to think like four year-olds.

If they are going to think and behave like four year-olds, then we should feel at liberty to treat them as such.

I propose putting them into daycare centers until such time as they can prove themselves capable of thinking at least as well as well-behaved first graders.

This is what we (the people) get for (the government) coddling right-wing extremists

Black 'American' flags at right-wing protests, on front porches vow ‘no quarter’ against liberals

... Now, amid far-right protests against COVID-related vaccine and mask mandates, far-right extremists are unfurling their latest symbol: An all-black American flag, with stars and stripes mainly visible through variations in material and shading. “No quarter shall be given” is the black flag’s traditional message—and in the context of the building drumbeat of right-wing “civil war” talk, a deeply ominous one. People flying them are essentially signaling that they’re prepared to kill their liberal neighbors. [emphasis mine]

... Black flags have a particular historical meaning for Americans: They first appeared on Civil War battlegrounds, carried by some Confederate Army units, and symbolizing the intent of the soldiers to neither seek any quarter nor give any—essentially, the opposite of the white flag of surrender, signifying that enemy combatants are to be killed rather than taken prisoner. It’s a vow to massacre their enemies. [emphasis mine]

Its use in the Civil War primarily appears to have been featured in some of the heinous massacres of Black Union soldiers in the war, notably at the Battle of the Crater and at Fort Pillow. Both battles are considered Confederate atrocities. [emphasis mine]

... Davis noted that the same right-wing channels where the black flag-raisings are being posted are similarly rife with “patriots” advising their cohorts to prepare for a civil war. “Who are their enemies? Pretty much any non-Conservative. You know, Democrats, Liberals, LGBTQ, BIPOC, and the vaccinated,” she notes. “So, we're the enemy, and they're openly professing to want to execute us.”

[Does US law say anything about making death threats? If so, can those laws be applied in this case? It's time to take the gloves off. Or perhaps we leave them on because we secretly hope the fascists will win? Cops are among the folks flying these flags.

And of course Trump's popularity stems directly from his support for this dystopian vision of American life:]

... Trump himself encouraged this narrative by threatening to unleash a civil war if Congress dared to impeach him, which sparked a wave of fevered preparations among his “patriot” fans in the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, Three Percenters and similar far-right groups. When it became apparent late in the 2020 campaign that he was likely headed for defeat at the polls, the civil-war discussions became intense, particularly among militia groups and white nationalists who were engaged in street-brawling protests, and “Boogaloo” activists tried leveraging street protests as opportunities for violence. Terrorism experts warned even then that fanatical Trump supporters were likely to engage in acts of mass violence.

This same, faux-patriotic worldview is what eventually inspired the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, which was the apotheosis of the GOP’s two-decades-and-longer descent into right-wing authoritarianism, fueled by eliminationist hate talk, reality-bereft conspiracist sedition, anti-democratic rhetoric and politics, and the full-throated embrace under Trump of the politics of intimidation and thuggery. There was a reason the insurrectionists believed they were all partaking of a “1776 moment”: they envisioned themselves as heroic patriots saving America from the commies.

If anyone believes the radicalized American right’s drive to push the nation into bloody civil strife was somehow expiated or exhausted that day, they only need check the presence of black American flags the next time there is a right-wing protest in their town. Or maybe they can just check the front porches in their neighborhoods.

Our values as a society are finally biting us in the ass, as essential workers realize how little we value them.

‘The pay is absolute crap’: Child-care workers are quitting rapidly, a red flag for the economy

Child care employment is still down more than 126,000 positions as workers leave for higher-paying positions as bank tellers, administrative assistants and retail clerks. Parents are struggling to return to work as daycare and after-school programs dwindle.

South Shore Stars early childhood program in Weymouth, Mass., received zero applicants this summer for its preschool teacher positions. It was a big change from when Director Jennifer Curtis was superintendent of a local school district and routinely had 200 people apply for elementary school jobs.

The problem, Curtis said, is day care workers typically make about $12 an hour and work a demanding job year-round. Public schools and other employers, who are also scrambling to hire workers, are poaching child-care workers by offering thousands of dollars more a year and better benefits. A nearby Dunkin’ starts pay at $14 an hour.

People tell Curtis they’ll come to South Shore Stars as a “last resort” if they can’t find anything else.

Hiring and retaining good workers has been tough in the child care industry for years, but it is escalating into a crisis. Pandemic-fueled staffing challenges threaten to hold back the recovery, as the staffing problems at day cares have a ripple effect across the economy. Without enough staff, day cares are turning away children, leaving parents — especially mothers — unable to return to work. [emphasis mine]

Nearly 1.6 million moms of children under 17 are still missing from the labor force. They dropped out during the pandemic to care for children and have not been able to return to work as the school and day care situation remains chaotic, especially for unvaccinated children under the age of 12. There are still covid outbreaks occurring at schools, and some childcares and after-school programs remain closed or they are accepting fewer children. [emphasis mine]

Even the White House is concerned. In a new report this past week, President Biden’s Treasury Department called the current child-care system “unworkable” with high costs for parents, low wages for workers and not enough spots for kids. [emphasis mine]

“Childcare is a textbook example of a broken market,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, a mother herself. She pointed out that families pay, on average, 13 percent of their income on child-care for young kids, yet day care workers earn so little they rank in the bottom 2 percent of all professions. Biden has proposed the largest federal investment ever in child-care in an effort to transform the sector.

“This is a crisis,” said Diane Barber, executive director of the Pennsylvania Child Care Association. “Parents are looking for child-care, but now it’s this Catch-22. We don’t have the staff, so we can’t open the classrooms, so families can’t go back to work because they can’t find child-care.”

[Childcare workers leaving in droves]

The numbers are staggering: The child-care services industry is still down 126,700 workers — more than a 10 percent decline from pre-pandemic levels, Labor Department data shows. While many industries complain they can’t find enough workers, the hiring situation is more dire in child-care than restaurants right now.

Young women in their late teens and 20s who are typically drawn to work at day-care centers are opting instead to take jobs as administrative assistants, retail clerks and bank tellers, according to interviews with former workers and day care owners. Veteran child-care workers are quitting. One day care worker interviewed for this article quit in the past week. Several others indicated they are contemplating exiting soon. More than 10,000 workers have left the industry since June, Labor Department data show.

“The pay is absolute crap for what’s required for the position,” said Tanzie Roberts, who quit in June. “I can’t afford to live on my own and work the child-care jobs that I am qualified for.”

Roberts now works from her Florida home doing administrative work for a tech company. She says she really misses working with kids but could not survive on the low wage at the day care. Her new job does not expose her to covid and pays more than $15 an hour with health insurance — a significant increase from the $11.45 she made working at a national chain day-care center.

More than a third of child care providers are considering quitting or closing down their business within the next year, as a sense of hopelessness permeates the industry, according to a report last month from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Over half of minority-owned centers are in danger of shutting, the report warns. Barber, who runs the child care group in Pennsylvania, says she now spends much of her day trying to talk day care owners “off the ledge” so they don’t close.

Centers that serve working-class families or those in rural areas are especially in danger of closing as directors say they can’t raise costs.

“We don’t have our toddler room open right now. Even the infant room isn’t currently full, because we don’t have enough staff,” said Sky Purdin, director of development at Jasmin Child Care and Preschool in Fargo, N.D., which serves low-income families. “We can’t match Walmart offering $15 or up. We are a small child-care center and we are not able to provide benefits. People are going to jobs that have benefits.”

For years, there have been calls to pay child-care workers more, as the median pay in the industry — $25,460 a year, according to the Labor Department — is below the poverty line for a family of four. During the coronavirus pandemic, the work has become even harder as staff must ensure kids as young as two and three wear masks and don’t touch each other.

The reason child-care centers pay less than service sector jobs is tied to their business model. Staffing costs are by far the biggest budget item at day-care centers, as many must abide by local laws that mandate one caregiver per three to five kids, depending on the ages of the kids and the area of the country. Childcare labor costs can be as much as 50 to 60 percent of a day care budget, according to a Treasury report. By contrast, restaurant labor costs tend to be about 30 percent of their budgets.

A study conducted during the pandemic by Philip Sirinides, director of the Institute of State and Regional Affairs at Penn State Harrisburg, found labor costs account for 80 percent of a child-care center’s budget. Raising pay for workers typically requires hiking fees for parents.

“Childcare providers have very narrow margins. They have to be at full capacity. That’s the only way the business model works for them,” said Sirinides.

Lawmakers in Washington D.C. approved $39 billion in child care relief in March as part of the Democrats’ American Rescue Plan, with the bulk of the money going toward “stabilization funds” that child-care centers can use for anything from worker pay to fixing the roof to buying masks. Months later, only 14 states have their applications up and running so child care centers can apply for funding, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The funding is viewed as a short-term fix by economists and day care owners who say it would not be enough to permanently raise pay in the industry.

[A problem capitalism is not equipped to solve]

“I’m already known as the most expensive day care in town,” said Jordyn Rossignol, owner of Miss Jordyn’s Child Development Center in rural Caribou, Maine. “We need significant public investment to stay open. The days of only surviving off tuition from parents and off the backs of working families is done.” [emphasis mine]

Rossignol said she has lost 24 staff members since the pandemic started. Nearly all told her they quit because they can make more money elsewhere. She pays $12.15 to $14 an hour, depending on experience. Among her former employees, two are working as bank tellers now, one went to a trucking company. Many became nannies. Her best toddler teacher now works across the street at a paint store.

Biden and top Democrats in Congress want to spend about $450 billion on child care as part of a sweeping $3.5 trillion bill, which would be the largest ever investment in federally-backed child-care programs. The legislation would reduce child-care costs for low and middle-income families, and offer higher wages to caregivers, while providing free prekindergarten to all three and four year olds.

[Conservatives prefer to pretend the problem is not real, or that it will just go away on its own]

Republicans and some moderate Democrats, such as Sen. Joe Manchin III from West Virginia, are balking at the high price of the overall bill. They want to see a smaller package, where aid is more targeted to those most in need. Manchin said: “It’s not the federal government’s responsibility to educate all our children,” to reporters from his state in May.

Roberts, the former child care worker who quit in June, grew up dreaming of becoming a teacher. But she says it was disheartening to learn that day care workers with 20 years more experience than her still made less than $15 an hour. During the pandemic when she had to get toddlers to keep their masks on and not touch each other, she was given a raise of 15 cents per hour. [emphasis mine]

A day care worker named Danielle in central Florida who is in her 30s said she is thinking of quitting. She asked that her full name not be used for fear of retribution from her employer, a national child-care chain. Her job does not offer health insurance. She babysits and grooms pets on weekends to make ends meet.

“I make $11 an hour and I’m exhausted,” Danielle texted on a brief break. “My credit cards are almost maxed out and my savings are dwindling. It’s not looking good … I stay because I love the kiddos. It breaks my heart to think about having to find a new job.”

Another problem that child-care providers cite in hiring staff is increased difficulty in obtaining the necessary criminal background checks for workers during the pandemic, especially from state government offices. Child care centers are required to fingerprint potential hires and check to ensure a new hire is not listed on the sex offender registry and has not committed child neglect or abuse in any state they lived in during the past five years. Some states have been especially slow to release background checks during the pandemic, numerous child care directors and advocates told The Washington Post.

Still, the top concern in the industry is how to raise pay. Among college graduates, those who major in early-childhood education earn the least out of 137 majors, according to a report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.

Jolie Cover called this the hardest year in her 30 years running Begin With Us Child Care and Preschool in Altoona, Pa. She is struggling to get applicants with even an associate’s degree or basic certificate.

“Our country needs to look at what we really value. We should value our youngest learners,” Cover said. “Our youngest kids should be cared for and educated in settings that are no less than what they receive in K-12 school districts.”

Proposal: you can't have your name added to Presidential ballot papers unless you recite the entire Constitution from memory, without a break or any assistance. You don't have to get it right on the first go, but you do have to be word-perfect in public at least once. If you never succeed, you can be a write-in candidate, but that's all.

A reminder, since this photo has been going around.

Yes, this was the police response to the Black Lives Matter protests. But this isn’t at the US Capitol, this photo was taken at The Lincoln Memorial. Behind these cops isn’t a building full of government leaders and staff. Behind them is a gigantic statue of President Abraham Lincoln. That’s right. The President who freed the slaves and waged a literal war against the white supremacists.

So maybe you’re confused.

Maybe you’re thinking, “All these SWAT cops are protecting Abraham Lincoln from Black Lives Matter? WTF?”

No. They’re not protecting a statue of Abraham Lincoln from BLM. They are protecting those steps from BLM. They’re preventing this historic steps from being used by BLM to make historic speeches.

That’s what they were there for. Martin Luther King Jr made his most famous and influential speech on the steps of The Lincoln Memorial. That’s what these SWAT cops were there to prevent. They were there to prevent BLM from using these steps to make another influential speech. They were there to stifle free speech, not to “protect” the memorial most beloved by BLM supporters.

Watch "American Carnage at Lafayette Square" on YouTube https://youtu.be/z56j06plUgs

This is my line in the sand. I'm crying right now. I have been already at other events, but this one shakes me to the core of my soul. As a white person, if you cannot find sympathy or empathy at the violence being carried out against fellow Americans because they don't look like you.. then what of this? What about when it is people that look like you? What if it is violent attacks to Australian reporter and cameramen, to the clergy of a church? Where are the ones saying they'd defend against tyrannical government or uphold religious freedom? If you can defend that President now and support him, please remove yourself from my life. If you can watch this and still not be moved to tears, fear, horror and anger then I want nothing to do with you. I am done. This is about all of us.

To Canada, don't pretend you're not guilty of systemic abuse against groups of people, especially indigenous or PoC. Be horrified. But fight to make Canada better and not just the slightly less worse racists. That goes to everyone wherever you are in the world.

However, this? This is tyranny. This is the type of event in the past started wars and coups and brought allied forces fighting together. We are no better than anyone else. America has fallen.

Joe Biden pushed to embrace radicalism of FDR by scale of economic crisis

... During the Democratic primary, Biden spoke of restoring normalcy after four years of Donald Trump, frequently appealing to voters’ nostalgia for the presidency of Barack Obama. But now, as he faces the general election amid the deepening economic turmoil, the presumptive Democratic nominee is reaching for the legacy of a radical American president: Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

“The blinders have been taken off,” Biden told supporters recently during a virtual fundraiser from his Delaware home, where he has been since March. “Because of this Covid crisis, I think people are realizing, ‘My Lord, look at what is possible. Look at the institutional changes we can make.’” ...

...

Last week, Biden announced six policy taskforces – centered around issues that include healthcare, climate and the economy – that pair his supporters with ideological allies of Sanders. Among those chosen to participate are some of the young, progressive leaders most skeptical of his approach, including the New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. ...

Trump Just Removed the IG Investigating Elaine Chao. Chao’s Husband, Mitch McConnell, Already Vetted the Replacement

In yet another assault on checks and balances, President Trump abruptly removed the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) independent watchdog late Friday – the same night he announced plans to fire the State Department Inspector General (IG). At DOT, the acting IG was overseeing a high profile investigation of Secretary Chao’s alleged favoritism benefiting her husband Senator Mitch McConnell’s political prospects, but has now been replaced with a political appointee from within the agency. The acting IG’s ouster calls into question the future of the Chao-McConnell investigation, other critical oversight, and whether the watchdog was dismissed for unearthing damaging information.

This move is the latest salvo of Trump’s assault on oversight. And it looks like the President made sure to cover all his bases to block accountability, not only nominating an IG to succeed the experienced watchdog who held the post, but also demoting the acting IG who was investigating Chao, and installing a political appointee to serve in his place while the Senate considers a permanent replacement. To make matters worse, Trump’s pick to be the new acting IG, Howard “Skip” Elliott, already has a job overseeing the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), an office he will now also be in charge of policing.

Trump’s decision to sideline DOT acting IG Mitch Behm (who has 17 years of experience with OIG) was lost in the shuffle of outrage following the announcement that Trump planned to fire the State Department IG, but potential conflicts of interest abound. The most high profile is the DOT OIG’s review of allegations that Secretary Chao gave Senator McConnell’s constituents special treatment and helped steer millions of federal dollars to Kentucky as he is facing low approval ratings and a tough reelection bid. ...

The EARN IT Act (S.3398) is an attempt to override The Communications Decency Act of 1996 (S230)

Wired: "It’s a Sneak Attack on Encryption--The crypto wars are back in full swing"

<br>
https://www.wired.com/story/earn-it-act-sneak-attack-on-encryption/

American Civil Liberties Union and Americans for Prosperity, joint response:

"EARN IT is an attack on encryption masquerading as a blow against underage porn. measure … would lead to a backdoor' in encrypted services, thereby jeopardizing the security of every individual. Technology experts and civil society organizations have repeatedly warned that backdoors could be exploited by bad actors and that no backdoor could guarantee only law-abiding officials have access.”

Media Alliance, a coalition of 25 organizations:

"The bill would fall far short of the goal of protecting children, while at the same time making all Americans less safe and less secure by potentially exposing everyone in society to substantially higher risk from malicious cyber actors, including hostile nation-states.”

ELECTRON FRONTIER FOUNDATION (EFF):

"Imagine an Internet where the law required every message sent to be read by government-approved scanning software. Companies that handle such messages wouldn’t be allowed to securely encrypt them, or they’d lose legal protections that allow them to operate.”

––––– –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

I will be posting more on this. It seems there are good reasons for this bill, lake making internet tech companies (faceBook and Google’s YouTube) responsible for the content they allow on their sites. It also allows and people to sue companies for such content. I’m all for that because it’s long past time we brought some balance back into the battle of individual rights vs. corporate rights. However, there are also serious risks to individual privacy and the potential to ban encryption altogether. That means this Bill is a knock on the door to permanent state surveillance.

Below is the first page of S.3398 which provides the purpose of the Bill and the main players who would ve heading the “Committee. We can stop right there. I have some concerns. They are circled in red.

What this ProPublica piece fails to reveal is that Chicago is keeping those 20 Libraries open because it’s cheaper than what it would cost to house Chicago's 16,451 registered homeless students, about 4.5 percent of its student body

.
Homeless children have no internet access. That means they will be prevented from taking part in the Chicago Public School's online study program during the elongated school closings due to COVID-19.

As if those kids didn’t have it bad enough already.  So Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, is doing what she can to help those kids by keeping those 20 Libraries open. Everything is not always black and white.
.
ProPublica should have delved a little deeper to understand that during last fall's Chicago Teachers Union Strike, one of the teacher’s main demands was for the Chicago to provide housing for these deeply disadvantaged students. Mayor Lightfoot refused. It was because she had to negotiate where she could within budget constraints. Again, everything is not always black and white. Shame on you, ProPublica.

.
enter image description here

.
Here’s where having a Democrat in the Oval Office and a democrat-heavy Senate and House would make a world of difference. Instead of giving tax cuts to the 1% and multi billion dollar corporations, we could be helping cities like Chicago tackle this travesty of so many children being denied a chance at life.

No, we do not need a revolution to fix this. All we need is sane, humane people in key positions of government who do the right thing while keeping an eye on a balanced budget …. so we can keep doing the right thing.

Bernie helped ensure Hillary’s electoral defeat in 2016 and that is why things are as bad as they are today. Now, many of Bernie’s people are saying that they refuse to vote for Biden because they are furious, AGAIN, that Bernie isn’t going to be the nominee. If that happens, AGAIN, it will be on the shoulders of those immature, self-serving Bernie supporters that those homeless children in Chicago (and other cities) will remain homeless forever. Those who repeat 2016 had better not think for a minute that anyone is going to buy their lies about caring about people. Once was enough. Twice would be an insult to intelligence. If Sanders allows his followers to pull the same stunt, his name will be remembered in infamy. And he will deserve every trashing he gets from every historian who mentions his name. So will the generation who helped him. They will be remembered as the antithesis of "The Greatest Generation.”

A suggestion for Warren supporters who are voting today, and who are ambivalent about Biden vs Sanders:

I suggest voting for Warren.

If you're not really big on Biden or Sanders, consider that a significant vote percentage for Warren could help make the case for Warren as VP or Treasury Secretary, or even help make the case for Warren as Senate Majority Leader.

Remember, at this point it's not about getting delegates. No worries about reaching a 15% threshold or "wasting" your vote. It's purely about sending a message with a raw vote count.

Thank you for your consideration.

Donald Trump to Fox News: 'Seriously considering' Joe Arpaio pardon

Okay, if you understand the #multiverse as I do, an infinite set of infinite subsets where every possibility that can be realized is realized... at this point we know that we, in the infinite subset of multiverses where I typed this post, are in one of the more ... unlikely infinite subsets to be in? We can say that, right?

Obviously #CheetoMussolini is floating a pardon of #SheriffJoe in the press as a trial balloon. If there is outcry but not TOO much outcry, the guy gets a pardon and "the base" gets a little red meat. If there's a lot of outcry, he doesn't do it.

And then there was the whole being chill with #Nazis for two days thing. "On many sides. *wink*"

This whole reality... it's just fucking #bizarroworld now. For a much vaster subset of the multiverse than the one which we occupy, we are the parallel universe.

Also, we're now in the subset where Pyongyang got a nuke just exactly when Donald #Trump became President. How's that for timing?
