Dutch wind farm to save eagles’ lives with #smart #cameras on #turbines

One of the biggest criticisms of the #wind farm proliferation in Europe has been the harm that the blades of the turbines cause to the local birdlife. Now it seems that there is a solution being tried out by a wind farm in Zeewolde (Netherlands), which involves the installation of smart cameras on the wind turbines.

The essence of the project is to have the cameras stop the rotation of the blades automatically if they identify the incoming object as an eagle, thus preventing a collision and injury or death to the animal. The smart device will be able to detect an object from a distance of 1,100 metres and then if the object closes in, at 300 metres the camera will identify it as an eagle and automatically stop the blades for a few minutes.

Why #eagles? Apart from the fact that they are rare and protected animals, being apex predators, their attention is usually focused on the ground below in search of prey. Thus, they might not even notice that there is an object ahead of them.

Single-bladed floating wind turbine. From a Dutch company called Touchwind.

"It's designed around a massive single-piece rotor, sitting on the end of a pole that's draped over a big barrel, with a large floating buoy hanging beneath it."

"This one huge double blade, says Touchwind, should cost around 30% as much to make as the triple-bladed arrangements on traditional turbines. It doesn't require any expensive active blade-pitch control systems, and where most standard turbines need to shut down in wind speeds above 25 or so m/sec (90 km/h / 56 mph), this one is rated for speeds as high as 70 m/sec (252 km/h / 157 mph). Less downtime equals more productive hours and more energy."

The reason for the lack of active blade-pitch control systems is the wind itself and the dangling buoy server to control the angle of the blade, so it always has the right exposure to the wind.

Single-bladed floating wind turbine promises half the cost, more power

Burning one of these pillars is like performing a mini fire ritual for that particular star formation. For your specific Birthstar, you will be able to connect inwardly to your planet of energetic origin and gain support with the positive aspects that are you.

Burning the other Nakshatra pillars on that specific Nakshatra day will tune you in with the favorable activities with that star’s energy for the day. It is recommended to at least burn your own personal Nakshatra pillar daily to stay connected to your essence. It is advantageous to burn the days Nakshatra pillar as well.

Net Zero - SNP cuts down millions of trees to build wind farms on public land

Mairi #Gougeon, the Scottish Government's Rural Affairs Secretary, admitted that they had felled millions of trees in order to build more turbines. It forms part of the #SNP administration's plans to make #Scotland net zero over the next decade.

And she claimed that many of the felled trees will have been "replanted on site" or replaced elsewhere, with the vast majority of them being part of a commercial crop that would have been chopped down anyway "at the end of their rotation”.

CROSS VENTILATION - Architecture
Cross ventilation is a natural phenomena where wind, fresh air or a breeze enters upon an opening, such as a window, and flows directly through the space and exits through an opening on the opposite side of the building (where the air pressure is lower). This produces a cool stream of air and as well as a current across the room from the exposed area to the sheltered area. Other terms used for the effect include, cross-breeze, cross-draft, wind effect ventilation and cross-flow ventilation.

Windows or vents positioned on opposite sides of the room allow passive breezes a pathway through the structure, which circulate the air and provide passive cooling. Cross ventilation is a wind-driven effect and requires no energy, in addition to being the most effective method of wind ventilation. A commonly used technique to remove pollutants and heat in an indoor environment, cross ventilation can also decrease or even obviate the need for an air-conditioner and can improve indoor air quality.
