Dutch wind farm to save eagles’ lives with #smart #cameras on #turbines

One of the biggest criticisms of the #wind farm proliferation in Europe has been the harm that the blades of the turbines cause to the local birdlife. Now it seems that there is a solution being tried out by a wind farm in Zeewolde (Netherlands), which involves the installation of smart cameras on the wind turbines.

The essence of the project is to have the cameras stop the rotation of the blades automatically if they identify the incoming object as an eagle, thus preventing a collision and injury or death to the animal. The smart device will be able to detect an object from a distance of 1,100 metres and then if the object closes in, at 300 metres the camera will identify it as an eagle and automatically stop the blades for a few minutes.

Why #eagles? Apart from the fact that they are rare and protected animals, being apex predators, their attention is usually focused on the ground below in search of prey. Thus, they might not even notice that there is an object ahead of them.

DXOMARK’s Apple iPhone 15 Pro Camera test: They won’t like being rated Global no2 behind Huawei P60 Pro

DXOMARK camera score of 154 shown, and 2nd ranking position in global rankings
We do need to keep in mind that the iPhone is overall a very quality piece of phone hardware (although I’m no fan of their restrictive OS philosophy), and also that this is a pure camera rating (not an overall phone rating).

But it also shows how really good the Huawei hardware is. Another thing that becomes clear from these ratings is, more megapixels does not equal the better camera. The Google Pixel series has also been proof of there, with Google really pulling way ahead, with more credit to the software than the hardware.

These are real world benchmarks though, and nothing at all to do with specifications on paper or marketing fluff, which is why I like them.

DPReview will live: Gear Patrol has purchased it from Amazon

Bild/Foto
“Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together,” said Everett. “Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can’t thank you all enough.”

Everett says in his announcement that current core employees across the company’s editorial, tech, and business divisions will continue to work on the site. He also says that DPReview site features and editorial coverage won’t be impacted by the acquisition and that the website will continue to operate as it did before the purchase.

“DPReview is the internet’s original center of gravity for photography,” says Eric Yang, CEO and founder of Gear Patrol.

And that is why there was such concern amongst photographers about the site being shut down by Amazon. After 25 years of operation, it contains a vast wealth of review data and content about most new cameras launched during this period, and it was feared this was going to all be lost.

The Senate gave, Wednesday, June 7 in the evening, the green light to a controversial provision of the justice bill authorizing the remote triggering of cameras or telephone microphones in certain investigations, without the knowledge of the persons concerned. Article 3 of the text carried by the Keeper of the Seals, Eric Dupond-Moretti, examined at first reading by the senators, brings several modifications to the criminal procedure.\
\
The measure voted on Wednesday has two purposes. On the one hand, real-time geolocation for certain offences. On the other hand, the activation of microphones and cameras to capture sound and images, which would be reserved for cases of terrorism, delinquency and organized crime.

"délinquance" (delinquency) seems a bit vague.

"LG's smartphone-making days may be over, but LG Innotek -- a major supplier of mobile camera modules -- is alive and well. It's introducing a new telephoto zoom camera module at CES 2023, offering true, continuous optical zoom."

"While most other long smartphone cameras use image-quality-degrading digital zoom to reach beyond their native focal length, LG's design uses moving lenses -- much like a traditional DSLR camera lens -- which preserves image detail. This camera module also uses a folded-optic design, also referred to as a periscope lens, keeping the overall size down. The result is a lens that covers a 4-9x range, with true optical zoom in between."

By "folded-optic design", they're referring to a system for using prisms so light, instead of going through lenses that are stacked parallel to the phone surface, the prism will redirect the light from going perpendicular to the phone surface to going parallel to the phone surface inside the phone, enabling lenses to be stacked perpendicular to the phone surface inside the phone. One prism redirects light as it enters the phone and a second redirects it before it reaches the sensor. If you're having trouble visualizing this, get the PDF document linked below (Apple patent).

Newly Developed Camera Can Take In-Focus Photos Without a Lens | PetaPixel

Due to physical limitations, cameras can only become so small before they simply cannot shrink anymore. But a new lensless camera design could change that.
Researchers have also been steadily moving towards a computational approach rather than on that relies on optics being a set distance from the image sensor in order to focus light upon it.

And you could end up with a camera so small you can't see it.

Here are a bunch of photos from my trailcam.
I like to leave food scraps out in front of the camera because animals love it.
The crows really liked to just play with the egg shells. That family of crows has come back multiple times. I love those guys.
A fisher showed up. That's new to me.
A gray fox showed up, too. I've seen him hunting in the fields around here during autumn,
The trailcam took a lot of videos too, but I don't have anywhere to post those that isn't youtube and youtube is evil. A few of the smaller videos I did temporarily post here: http://www.operatorchan.org/t/res/113833.html

#App to detect hidden mini-cameras

“During the scan process, the ToF sensor emits laser pulses and receives the reflected light off of the object – such as the water bottle – and its surroundings. Specifically, the hidden camera embedded in the object reflects the incoming laser pulses at a higher intensity than its surroundings due to an effect called lens-sensor retro-reflection,” they explained.

“This occurs when almost all light energy impacting an object is reflected directly back to the source. These unexpectedly high-intensity reflections from hidden cameras cause certain regions of the ToF sensor to be “saturated” and appear as black pixels. LAPD processes these saturated areas to automatically identify the hidden camera and its location and displays it on the user’s smartphone screen.”

Infinix’s new Zero X series comes with high refresh rate displays and 5x periscope zoom camera - Zoom is probably the next Frontier for Mobile Phone Cameras

Megapixels are increasing, and we've seen wider angles, but the next differentiator will probably be optical zoom capability, as megapixels can only do so much without real optical capability. Optical zoom, along with really wide angle, and macro capability are what holds mobile phone cameras well back from DSLRs, yet many prefer to use their phones as they always have them close but due to their compact size.

So we see Infinix's Zero X now has a 5x optical zoom, and tomorrow will tell if Apple has made any real differences to their iPhone.

Best Smartphone Cameras in September: Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus: XDA Developers tests

For many the camera is their deciding factor of the choice of phone (yes most others tend to stick to a brand). It often just comes down to Samsung vs Apple, so this is interesting in that Xiaomi and OnePlus are also compared (both being very popular brands now).

But an important resource to also consult is DXOMARK which does a range of detailed standardised camera tests on most mobile phone cameras. I see they have published "The best ultra-premium smartphones for photography [Summer 2021]" where the Huawei P50 Pro comes out top in the benchmarking. But always also look at the type of test for the use-case you'd be using for your camera.
