Microsoft says Russian #disinformation campaign targeting US #elections has begun

U.S. officials have said that #Russia engaged in a widespread campaign of digital disinformation and hacking in the past two presidential elections, with particular effort dedicated to the 2016 election.

The governments of Belgium and Czechia also warned earlier in April that Russia was operating a disinformation and interference network targeting the upcoming EU parliamentary election.

According to the Microsoft report, Russia's campaign to sow disinformation in the U.S. has begun in earnest over the past month and a half but has yet to reach the height of previous efforts.

One of the more common methods is for Russia to spread fake "whistleblower" narratives, which are then picked up by U.S. media outlets.

"Ultimately, after the narrative has circulated online for a series of days or weeks, U.S. audiences repeat and repost this disinformation, likely unaware of its original source," Microsoft said.

The focus of the new campaign is to spread "divisive content," including criticism of U.S. support for Ukraine, the Microsoft report said.

Ukrainian hackers disrupt transport services in Russian cities

Hackers of the IT Army of Ukraine targeted the Russian government and local systems, disrupting the fare payment system in Moscow and Kazan public transport, the Digital Transformation Ministry said on March 13.

#Cyberattacks have become an increasingly common tool employed by both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The multi-faceted cyberattack reportedly targeted the #Troika fare payment system, used in 38 Russian regions.

The ministry said that as a result, owners of transport cards in #Moscow and #Kazan could not pay for their tickets, top-up travel cards, or pay for parking.

The IT Army of Ukraine, a group of volunteer hackers supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, said the operation was prepared for nearly a month.

Denmark to donate all its artillery to Ukraine

#Denmark has decided to deliver all the #artillery rounds from its stockpiles to Ukraine, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Ukrainian Lunch at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 17.

“If you ask Ukrainians, they are asking us for ammunition now, artillery now. From the Danish side, we decided to donate our entire artillery,” Frederiksen said.

“There is still ammunition in European stocks. This is not a question of only production because we have the weapons, we have ammunition, we have air defense that we don’t have to use ourselves at the moment that we should deliver to Ukraine.”

Russia does not want peace with us. They are destabilizing the Western world from many different angles -- in the Arctic region, the Balkans, and Africa - with #disinformation, #cyberattacks, hybrid war, and obviously in Ukraine,” she said.

Cyberattack on Russian scientific research center deals 'devastating' damage

"Volunteer patriot" hackers of the BO Team launched a cyberattack against the Russian Far Eastern Research Center of Space Hydrometeorology "Planeta," destroying its database and expensive equipment, Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) said on Jan. 24.

Cyberattacks are a common tool used by both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war. In one of the most devastating strikes, Russian hackers targeted Ukraine's telecommunications provider, #Kyivstar, causing communication outages nationwide last December.

Media reports on the cyberattack against the Russian space #hydrometeorology center emerged already on Jan. 23.

Ukraine's military intelligence agency now confirmed the reports, saying that the hackers allegedly destroyed 280 servers and two petabytes of data.

Iran-linked cyberattacks threaten equipment used in U.S. water systems and factories

The cyberattacks have spanned multiple states, CISA said. While the equipment in question, "Unitronics Vision Series programmable logic controllers," is predominately used in water and wastewater systems, companies in energy, food and beverage manufacturing, and health care are also under threat.

A flock of chickens, held for #ransom — Growing #cyberattacks on #Canada's #food system threaten #disaster

Source: https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/safety-net-flock-chickens-held-110035438.html

Farms are now complex technical operations that use networks of remote monitors that measure soil moisture, or robotic milkers that can detect an infection in a single teat, or environmental control systems that maintain the precise indoor temperature and air filtration needs of a poultry barn. All that, theoretically, could be commandeered and held for ransom in a #cyberattack. For example, a hacker could gain control of a thermostat and threaten to turn up the heat and kill an entire flock of chickens.

Okay, let me explain things for all the slightly confused #newhere people.

Diaspora*

Diaspora is a open source, distributed social network developed by programmers around the world. It operates on different "pods". Where each pod is a server that holds your data. And pods communicate with each other to form the Diaspora network. This design makes Diaspora resilient to #cyberattacks and enhances #privacy. And pod taken down by hackers or governments will only effect the users on the pod. Users on other pods are still safe.

Do note that although pods are interconnected. You can only login form the pod your account it on. Logging in from other pods will result in nothing besides error messages.

thefederation

The Federation is a network formed by serval social networks.
- Diaspora - FAQ-Tutorial-Rules
- Friendica - FAQ-Support
- Hubzilla - About-Tutorial-Video
- Socialhome
- GangGo

They are interconnected. Posts on one network is shared with the others, but each network has different features and looks.

Hashtags and posting

Like Twitter we use #hashtags and sharing. If a stranger’s post has a #hashtag you are following, it will show up in your stream. If you are sharing with someone, you will see all of their posts.
Also, upon clicking the buttons on top of the post editor. Weird text are inserted. That is absolutely normal. Diaspora uses the Markdown format for all the post. It's ... kinda a standard for the developers working on the project.

Helping to develop diaspora

I'm getting tired (it's 1 AM when I'm writing this post) now, please refer to this post for information regarding how to contribute to the Diaspora project directly. (Technical skills needed)

Have a nice time on #Diaspora*
