Allies collect funding to purchase 800,000 shells for Ukraine, Czech president says

Czech President Petr Pavel said on March 7 that after Norway had joined the Czech-led initiative on purchasing 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine, the required funds were collected

Pavel said 18 countries participated in the Czech-led allied initiative, and "within weeks," Ukraine would get the ammunition.

Denmark to donate all its artillery to Ukraine

#Denmark has decided to deliver all the #artillery rounds from its stockpiles to Ukraine, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the Ukrainian Lunch at the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 17.

“If you ask Ukrainians, they are asking us for ammunition now, artillery now. From the Danish side, we decided to donate our entire artillery,” Frederiksen said.

“There is still ammunition in European stocks. This is not a question of only production because we have the weapons, we have ammunition, we have air defense that we don’t have to use ourselves at the moment that we should deliver to Ukraine.”

Russia does not want peace with us. They are destabilizing the Western world from many different angles -- in the Arctic region, the Balkans, and Africa - with #disinformation, #cyberattacks, hybrid war, and obviously in Ukraine,” she said.

EU to deliver over 1 million shells by end of year

The EU aims to deliver over 1 million #shells to Ukraine by the end of 2024, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said after meeting the EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, in Kyiv on Feb. 7.

Borrell recently conceded that the European bloc will fail on its promise to provide a million #artillery rounds by March. Only around half of the number is projected to be delivered by the original deadline.

"We highly appreciate the EU's military assistance," said Shmyhal, who held a joint press conference with Borrell.

"The European defense industry is building up its capabilities, and I'm sure we'll feel it soon."

4 unanswered questions about the #future of the #Ukraine #war

Source: https://www.vox.com/world-politics/23600837/ukraine-war-russia-whats-next

That war is brutal and horrible is not exactly a new observation, but the war in Ukraine is both a war of the future and a war of the past. Technological advances on the #battlefield — tools like #drones — are reshaping the war, but they’re also not transforming conflict into something never before seen. Right now, traditional instruments of war — #ammunition, #artillery, armored vehicles, ground troops, trenches — are anchoring this #conflict.

#Putin’s Play for the Western #Right

Putin would much rather have us arguing over #gay rights than over how many more #artillery systems to send to #Ukraine. His comments at Valdai might seem like hyperventilation, Soviet-era blather, or even just plain silliness, but he knows what he’s doing. It’s up to us to make sure his culture-war-propaganda gambit doesn’t work.

The Russian #military is well-suited to short, high-intensity campaigns defined by a heavy use of #artillery. By contrast, it is poorly designed for a sustained #occupation, or a grinding war of attrition, that would require a large share of Russia’s ground forces, which is exactly the conflict it has found itself in. The Russian military doesn’t have the numbers available to easily adjust or to rotate forces if a substantial amount of combat power gets tied down in a war. Their big assumption was that in the event of a #crisis with #NATO, political leadership would authorize mobilization to raise manning levels and deploy staffed-up formations.
Enter Putin’s “special operation,” which meant launching a major war in #Europe, against the continent’s second largest country, with a force operating at peacetime manning levels. #Putin assumed that Ukraine would quickly surrender, and a regime change operation could be conducted without the need to plan and organize for a major #war. The resulting debacle, which will be studied for decades to come, proceeds from the intersection of terrible Russian political assumptions with those of the armed forces regarding the forces that would be made available for a war of this scale (as conceived in the design).

The #war has turbocharged this criticism. #Russia is advancing slowly in eastern #Ukraine thanks to its advantage in #artillery. But it is a grinding campaign rather than one of bold armoured manoeuvre. Russia has lost at least 774 tanks since invading Ukraine, according to a count by Oryx, a blog which tracks the war. Around half of those were destroyed, a third were captured by Ukraine and most of the rest were abandoned. This implies that Russia has lost around a quarter of its estimated pre-war inventory of almost 3,000 tanks. Some elite units, such as the 4th Guards Tank Division, appear to have lost an even higher proportion. Vladimir #Putin envisaged his tanks rolling into #Kyiv; instead they ended up bogged down on the city’s outskirts, before being forced to retreat.
The battles of the last three months have underlined two potent threats to armoured vehicles. One is the anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). Its destructive potential has been clear since the Yom Kippur war of 1973, when #Egypt’s Soviet-made Sagger ATGMs smashed Israeli tanks. A memo written by the American #army after the war assessed that the Sagger, if not disrupted, had a 60% chance of achieving a “kill” against an M60 tank from as far as two miles out.

#Germany: 56th #Artillery Command re-activates as Theater Fires #Command in #Wiesbaden

source: https://www.army.mil/article/251803/56th_artillery_command_re_activates_as_theater_fires_command_in_wiesbaden

“The reactivation of the 56th Artillery Command will provide USAREUR-AF with significant capabilities in multi-domain operations.”

...

It will further enable the synchronization of joint and multinational fires and effects, and employment of future long range surface to surface fires across the USAREUR-AF area of responsibility.”

... of future long range surface to surface fires across the USAREUR-AF area ... - this ability is only needed in the event of a war in Europe, or am I seeing this wrong?
