Countryside access curbs in England ‘cost 6 times’ Scotland’s right to roam

In England, only 8% of the countryside is open for walking, picnicking and other outdoor activities. This includes footpaths, the coastal path, mountains, moors, heaths and downs. In Scotland, all of the countryside is open for access as long as guidelines are followed such as leaving no trace and not harming farmland.

Data shows implementing policy that closes 92% of English countryside cost £69m over five years

I did my first heavy leg day in a month, but not as heavy as the last one that I felt fo ra week. I was pretty tight yesterday morning so did an easy run but followed by lots of walking throughout the day. I'm feeling it a lot more today. Time to work out the beef jerky! #running #exercise #fitness

Chicken Fat

Robert Preston (1962)

If, like me, you were an elementary school student in the US in the 1960s, you should remember this record. It was distributed, for free, to every school in the US by the President's Council on Physical Fitness. Physical fitness and science education were national security priorities. We stood next to our desks and exercised to this record. I have to admit, I don't remember how to do some of these exercises. If you grew up watching Captain Kangaroo, you should remember this.

Robert Preston was famous for his starring role in The Music Man, and this was recorded while they were working on the soundtrack album.

Hacking BLE to Liberate your Exercise Equipment eg for the Domyos EL500 elliptical trainer

Diagram representing how the Bluetooth protocol notifications communicate back and forth between an elliptical trainer and an Androi device with a RF connector.
It’s a story we’ve heard many times before: if you want to get your data from the Domyos EL500 elliptical trainer, you need to use a proprietary smartphone application that talks to the device over Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE). To add insult to injury, the only way the software will export your workout information is by producing a JPG image of a graph. This just won’t do, so Juan Carlos Jiménez gives us yet another extensive write-up, which provides an excellent introduction to practical BLE hacking.

Yes, the process may seem like a bit more effort, but it could have three major potential advantages:

  • If the supplier decides to no longer support the app or device, or goes out of business, this won’t affect the hack.
  • It looks like some additional data may even be able to be extracted.
  • Your data need not be captured and read by the app any longer, meaning increased privacy.

The project is not yet completed though, as it seems the data capture and analysis is still being worked on. Looks like a project well worth keeping an eye on.

The unpacking and analysis of how the BLE GATT comms works is also very interesting.

Google can turn ANC earbuds into a heart rate monitor with no extra hardware – with interesting upsides

Side-view illustration of the ear and the ear canal, with an earbud plugged in, showing soundwaves travelling in the canal, and indicating deformation taking place due to heart beats.
Google performed two sets of studies with 153 people that found APG “achieves consistently accurate heart rate (3.21% median error across participants in all activity scenarios) and heart rate variability (2.70% median error in inter-beat interval) measurements.”

Compared to existing HR sensors, it’s not impacted by skin tones. Ear canal size and “sub-optimal seal conditions” also do not impact accuracy.

So apart from the skin pigmentation advantage, there is also no extra device or hardware required, and wearing ear buds during exercise is a pretty common behaviour. The downside is that no-one really wears earbuds 24/7.

The bicibús: how Barcelona got kids cycling safely to school – and loving it!

he bus leaves Monday to Friday at 8.30am sharp outside the Sant Antoni market in #Barcelona’s #Eixample district, but this is no ordinary vehicle; it has hundreds of wheels, dozens of drivers – and no passengers. This is the Barcelona #bicibús, the fun, safe mode of transport that makes going to school feel like a party.

On a cool September morning, a group of about 60 parents and children aged three to 11, on bikes and scooters, gather in the Plaça Conxita Pérez for the school run.
