The boss man came up tonight to help me out with a light issue. I said "wow, what a moustache, you should be serving coffee in Melbourne." He was polite regardless. Later, during my autistic replay of the whole interaction it occurred to me that 'you have a moustache worthy of a barista ' might not be the compliment I thought it was. My Footscray infused life. Heh.

I'm returning home in the morning to a place where I can be my super freak self and the weirder the better, as it all adds to local colour.

I've had a great time here. I always love the bush I just still don't know where I really belong.

And I've yet to meet people I can really jive with, but the lady chef here came pretty bloody close. Trust a Punjabi Sikh to be that cool šŸ˜Ž

Plants... Oh look the peperomia prostrata is flowering! Did you know that they're a magnolid and evolved during the Cretaceous, so less string of turtles and more string of pinacosausus...

Yeah and somehow it took fifty years to get diagnosed. It's not that all us snowflakes are trying to be autistic these days, Martin, we were there when you were beating us up for reading books. What's the harm in giving a little kid a bit more low key environment? If your kid has to go to school in a sensory war zone that's a problem, not something a kid should have to try to toughen up to survive.

Here for the generations of divergents coming up.

Would #neurodivergent folks find themselves at an advantage in dealing with #aliens?ā

Letā€™s find out.ā

We want to publish your short #stories, flash #fiction, #poetry, and #art exploring encounters between neurodivergent people and neurodivergent aliens. We are looking for:ā

Why is it so hard to find anyone to build a #coop in the EU? I am interested in starting a public interest tech (#PIT) #collective delivering #health and #fitness solutions aimed at the general public. #FOSS would be absolutely required with #GPL licensing. #Mental health tech would also be a focus. If anyone is interested (esp., in the EU) please contact me. #NOTblockchain #neurodivergent #nocrypto #ADHD #ASD #dataaggregation

If anyone would like to start an EU based technology cooperative (I'm in CZ) please reach out to me. I would very much like to work on creating technology solutions that address public issues ( the big ones for me are personalized health monitoring, mental health and aging population).

But the unemployment rate of autistic people remains disturbingly high. ABS data from 2018 shows 34.1 per cent of autistic people are unemployed ā€“ three times higher than that of people with any type of disability and almost eight times that of those without a disability.

ā€œA lot of the time people hear that someoneā€™s autistic and they assume incompetence,ā€ says Varney, who was this week appointed the chair of the Victorian Disability Advisory Council.

ā€œBut we have unique strengths, specifically hyper focus, great creativity, and we can think outside the box, which is a great asset in workplaces.ā€

In Israel, the defence force has a specialist intelligence unit made up exclusively of autistic soldiers, whose skills are deployed in analysing, interpreting and understanding satellite images and maps.

ā€¦

ā€œRather than focus on the deficits of the person, focus on the strengths. A quarter of National Disability Insurance Scheme plans name autism as the primary disability, so society has no choice ā€“ thereā€™s going to be such a huge number of people who are young and looking for jobs who are autistic. There is a skills shortage as it is, so you need to look at neurodiverse talent.ā€

ā€¦

ā€œThese individuals want to come to work and get the work done ā€“ they are not going off for a coffee and chatting.ā€

ā€¦

ā€œWe need to see jobs for a diverse range of autistic people.ā€
