The Mill is Greater Manchester’s quality #newspaper - delivered by email

..."The Mill is our attempt to find a new business model for #local #news. Local #journalism has been devastated in recent years, with thousands of #reporters laid off and newsrooms badly depleted. We hope this project can be part of the fightback. (Read Joshi’s piece about what’s gone wrong in local news).

The Mill is funded by its readers via a paid #membership program. For the price of a couple of pints per month, paying members receive original reporting from us daily rather than weekly. They also join our community, including being part of our members’ discussion group and being invited to our meetups (once that is allowed again). The Mill’s members are supporting the growth of a new type of journalism in Greater Manchester, allowing us to take on more reporting and hire local journalists.
...
The Mill has a network of brilliant freelance contributors. We are constantly on the lookout for great journalists, whether they are in the first year of their career or the 50th year. Our best pieces have been written both by people who have bylines in the New York Times and The Guardian, and writers who are still studying.
...
We do take on a couple of trainee interns per year, who generally come into the office one day a week alongside their journalism course. Several of our staff started off by doing these placements. However, if you are interested in interning with us, please pitch us great freelance stories first. We almost always give our placements to people who have written one or two freelance stories for us and shown a really good understanding of what we publish and how we write, rather than people we have never heard from before. You can send your pitches to editor@manchestermill.co.uk.

If you have other ideas or skills you would like to contribute to help us grow, please email editor@manchestermill.co.uk. And we are always looking for people who have email lists in Greater Manchester and who are willing to tell their lists about us to spread the word. If that’s you, please get in touch."...

John Pilger, one of the greatest investigative reporters of our time died yesterday.

He exposed the horror and crimes of US and Australia in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. He wrote about subjects most people wouldn't dare or care writing about.

He was like a shining light in the dark world of journalism with raser sharp pen to poke into the bubble of power controlling the information released to the media and amplified by the paid propagandists who called themselves reporters.

He sure will be missed.

Ends on Sun, Dec 17, 2023 11:59 PM

The IWMF's Kim Wall Memorial Fund will provide $5,000 #grants to #journalists whose work embodies the spirit of Kim’s reporting. The grant will fund #women or #non-binary #reporters covering subculture, broadly defined, and what Kim liked to call “the undercurrents of rebellion.” Kim wanted more women to be out in the world, brushing up against life, and the Kim Wall Memorial Fund honors this legacy.

All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Women or nonbinary journalists with one (1) or more years of professional experience working in news media from anywhere in the world. Internships do not count toward professional experience. Staff and freelance journalists are both eligible.
Applicants must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. However, reporting may be published in any language.
Applicants must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.
Grants will be awarded to cover reporting-related costs including travel, logistics, insurance, visa fees, professional stipends and payments for producers, translators, etc. The IWMF does not cover the cost of equipment purchase or rental and cannot support academic research or research for academic publication.

The IWMF believes that gender does not conform to one notion. We are inclusive of all women, non-binary and gender non-conforming journalists.

Application Period
The IWMF is accepting applications from November 6 to December 17, 2023, at 11:59 PM EST via Submittable. The IWMF cannot consider time-sensitive proposals. #NSO Group #Spyware Targeted Dozens of #Reporters in #ElSalvador

“If #Mexico was dramatic, this one is jaw-dropping,” says John Scott-Railton, senior researcher at #CitizenLab, “because what we found was this incredibly extensive, pervasive, and aggressive targeting of media in El Salvador. And that targeting is very much paired with other threats against #media there.”

Glenn Greenwald: Why privacy matters

#GlennGreenwald was one of the first #reporters to see — and #write about — the #EdwardSnowden #files, with their #revelations about the #UnitedStates' extensive #surveillance of #private #citizens. In this searing #talk, Greenwald makes the case for why you need to care about #privacy, even if you’re “not doing anything you need to hide."
