Happy Good Friday/Easter!

I apologize I've not found (m)any new photos to post recently, as I've been repairing my camera, lens & self. But...
here's a souvenir from my last visit to a favorite Old Cypress swamp.

And... I've planned a trip to a new spot for me, one of the world's biggest swamps, and the furthest South in the U.S. By car, boat, and foot, hopefully some new things soon (April). Happy Holidays (and spring!)

Here's one more #anhinga image for now, the previous being focused ont the falling out (atop the tree) and one of three getting thumped off the branch and fell by my feet. That got me thinking about one of my all-time favorite songs/tracks. (David Cosby RIP)

"Why can't we go on as three?"

Well, these three chicks ("poults") seem to be doing fine, with Dad here at the nest, to give their nests equal time as the egrets.

Still Reading? 🙏 🏆

"The best part of the trip" - The sound-track.

This is one of the top songs in my life experience, in the rock/pop genre.
Beautifully sung and performed, it (like "Lather") gave me goose-bumps and - on CD - epitomized 'state of the art recording

Happy Weekend, Spring '23
May arrived, pandemics abated, and weather is weather. Meanwhile, in #Nature... Nesting Season as usual...

A song written by David Crosby, amplified through life, Grace Slick, the #60s, and 1968's Jefferson Airplane,_ Crown of Creation_

This song has an interesting back-story of course (biographical) but also a song of the times. f

TRIAD -

You want to know how it will be
Me and him or you and me
You both stand there, your long hair flowing
Your eyes alive, your mind still growing
Saying to me - what can we do now that we both love you
I love you too, I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three
You are afraid, embarrassed too
No one has ever said such a thing to you
Your mother's ghost stands at your shoulder
Face like ice, a little bit colder
Saying to you - you can not do that, it breaks
All the rules you learned in school
I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three
We love each other, it's plain to see
There's just one answer comes to me
Sister lovers, water brothers
And in time maybe others
So you see what we can do is to try something new
If you're crazy too, I don't really see
Why can't we go on as three

Grand Anhinga Nest - Anhingas, Egrets, & Ibises - a Community on a Rookery

This is on a small island rookery in SW Florida, now in "nesting season".
Mostly egrets are here, snowy and great, and as usual the juveniles are squawking and play-fighting.

And here is a very large, comfy nest for the Anhingas, who are monogamous and may return to the same nest/spot each year.
This year I've seen few of the once-common glossy ibises, but you can see one or two here, midway through.

Short version: I was standing under this tree (rather ravished from Hurricane Ian) and surveying the tree and its anhinga family. Suddenly there was a squawk and commotion and I looked up but heard a thump near my feet. Hello....

Anhinga at my foot

Little guy overboard! Pushed, it seems.
He was all right, and made his way back to the treetop. But as you can see here, he's not happy. Neither are they.

One angry little anhinga - and two adults

I have more still pictures of them in various stages of this drama.
More anhinga photos too, among my nature photography collection, @ http://www.fenichel.com/anhinga.shtml

A Tortoise and Anhinga

A tale not yet written but ripe for a story! Want to write it?

It begins:
One sunny day a tortoise and an anhinga were both taking advantage of the sun, the anhinga drying his wings and tortoise napping.

It's what they do. "That was the end of the episode I watched, but it begs for a fable.... The tortoise safe in its shell and anhinga on its sunny branch soon ready for flight again. Said the tortoise, "?" Feel free... Neither one of them had much to say or tricks to play.

Preening Anhinga

Usually preferring a tree stump or fallen branch to stretch its wings to dry in the sun, this river bank didn't offer much so s/he just 'winged it'. On the ground. With a chance to do a little preening while drying off. (Anhinga's have no oil in their feathers like most waterbirds, so they remain grounded between dive-bombing flights into the water, submerging and re-appearing like a "snake".
