Concrete consequences: European study highlights issue of increasing width of cars

The study sheds light on the challenges posed by the evolving dimensions of vehicles and their impact on urban infrastructure and safety.

It states that new cars in Europe have been widening at an average rate of 1 cm every two years, with approximately half of the newly sold vehicles already surpassing the suitable width for planned street parking spaces.

Crazy ...

SUVs drive trend for new cars to grow 1cm wider in UK and EU every two years, says report

The Guardian

Bigger cars more likely to kill people, release more toxic gas and are outgrowing design of cities.

New cars in the EU and UK have grown 1cm wider every two years, the Guardian can reveal, driven by large luxury SUVs whose sales show no sign of slowing. (...)

New cars have become so bloated that half of them are too wide to fit in parking spaces designed to the minimum on-street standards in many countries, the report found. The average width of a new car in the EU and UK passed 180cm in the first half of 2023, having grown an average of 0.5cm each year since 2001. (...)

In the mid-1990s, the EU banned vehicles wider than 2.55 metres to stop trucks and buses from growing too large. But the legislation did not create separate limits for cars, which analysts say have started to cross key thresholds for which roads and cities were not designed. (...)

Useless signs for 200
enter image description here
The useless sign I'm talking about is the red one in the background. It says that this area is for loading/unloading only. So if you park there illegally, you will be fined. So far, so good. There are two parking spots. The SUV in the back occupies the regular one, the SUV in front stands on a handicapped spot. The Tesla in the middle stands in-between both spots.

You could of course say that the driver of the SUV in front may very well be handicapped and a few people I know may actually agree with you. However, that is on our campus, right next to the building where I am teaching most of the time and a while ago I found that this car belongs to a dear colleague. And I can assure you, she does not have any physical disability.

A few times I've also seen the Tesla standing on the handicapped spot, but I don't think that person qualifies either, not with a model 3. But it's great to see so many role models showing our students how to behave in society...

We can't save the world with electric cars

Going electric does not solve our problems, it only deepens them. As engineers, we must say the opinion of the professionals in the industry is contrary to the mainstream, and for good reason, Zsolt Horváth and Tamás Ignácz write.

We’ve known for a long time that our GDP addiction and capitalist economic model are incompatible with life on Earth.

Scientists kept saying that for decades, yet very little happened. A few years ago, the electrification of passenger vehicles had begun its journey, hoping it could reduce CO2 emissions to save the planet.

Not only does it not help — it worsens the situation, and yet we keep heading towards a disaster.
