Welcome to #Checkin for Saturday, December 24, 2022!

Hello Checkineers, twas the day/night before Christmas and all through the house... The best part of being an adult at this time of year is having a treasure trove of memories of times past to enjoy as well as being able to choose exactly what you feel like doing (or not do). Sure, conditions are rarely perfect but there are so many uplifting things we can do for ourselves and for others. What's something, past or present, about this festive season that makes you smile?

If you're wondering, these are my three wise trees - they are minichristmas tree rescues (two from others) that have been living on my deck. It seemed crazy to drag them back in to be part of Christmas again but it worked. What's making me smile - the opportunity to spend time with a few pals I haven't seen for some years.

Welcome to #Checkin for Friday, December 23, 2022!

UPDATE: Sorry for beiing sooooo late! Had a power outage for most of last night. Friends, unaffected, offered to put Zach and me up in their place not far away to keep warm. In my hurry in the darkness, I did not bring my laptop. So here we are... back, warm but the extreme freezing rain weather has begun. Let the fun times continue!

Today is Festivus. Have to admit I've never celebrated Festivus but hey why not - it's a parody of Christmas - a non commercial time with simplistic food and decorations when one airs grievances and wrestle (???). I think I've got to look up that Seinfeld episode! Frankly, except for the airing of grievances and wrestling, Festivus almost sounds like my typical Christmas!

If you do Festivus, please share what you do. If you don't, what are some of the unexpected things you find yourself doing at this time of year that you don't any other time of the year? O.o Or, what are things that you've never done before but have on occasion been tempted to try?

Welcome to #Checkin for Thursday, December 22, 2022!

Hello, hello! Good morning, good afternoon, good evening! Well, because I'm posting in the evening of Dec 21 PST for Thursday Dec 22, it's still Winter Solstice for me. 😆 So, happy Winter Solstice or happy day after the Winter Solstice!

I've been meaning to celebrate this day for the last few years but somehow things didn't work out. This year I thought planning it in advance and getting a few people interested in joining me would ensure a lovely time celebrating the beginning of a new cycle. Not so, a combination of totally unexpected chaos creating events kiboshed what was planned. But hey, the solstice is the solstice so, candles are lit together with other soft lights on this shortest, darkest day (in the northern hemisphere). A little music and then a couple of friends happened to drop by for a few laughs. So, despite the stormy cold and canceled plans, it is a wonderful thing to celebrate the return of the sun.

Well hello! SuAnn starts hosting tomorrow but today –

Some days are just…days. Not long ago I had a day of my reach being shorter than I expected leading to much knocking over of things and spilled flour while baking. Today I had some soreness from working out but didn’t realize how bad it was until I took an ibuprofen and hey – this is way better! I can actually do stuff without having to manage it. Of course, that means no work out today, take it easy tomorrow and it’s a good thing the holiday break is next week.

Let’s talk about scams. Gizmodo out out their top 10 list but both of us got sucked in by the same scam…one that is based on shipping or imported goods. Both were by email🙄- we don’t answer calls from unknown numbers. Luckily we didn’t lose money, just had to get new credit card.

Howdy, howdy!

We recently watched Limitless with Chris Hemsworth. It’s a natural fit for us because our focus is living the most healthy life we can. It's a mix of training and experience with some research behind it…papers are not cited so not sure about the quality of research but nothing he does is overboard for someone in good health. AKA not overweight, no issues around food, no mental health or metabolic issues. At least he's super personable and so easy to watch. His friends are funny and the trainers are an interesting range of people. Each challenge ends with changes he hopes to make in his personal routine.

I'll admit this isn't the type of show I usually watch but it's certainly encouraged me to keep the one 24 hr fast a week going. You can tell we're old because fast day (and thus night) is Saturday. Did I mention I like to eat?

Hello fellow humans.

I think the world has decided COVID is endemic, lives are resuming routine although we’ve had two different people cancel appointments because of illness which is great. I have to admit, I was hoping more employers would continue giving sick days and people would embrace staying home when sick (either WFH or just focusing on getting well). But I see Advil and Buckley’s are advertising to mask symptoms so people can get out and party again🙄

I have changed a habit. I used to go to work, and even exercise, if I didn’t feel 100%. Post-pandemic I have the zoom option for working out so I’ve been making sure to use that option. Has FOMO changed for you after the past couple of years? Are you more willing to give yourself a break?

It seems we don't get to just stay in one place if we live on a corporate social media site. With Twitter changing hands a lot of people have migrated to other platforms. I was going to do this topic later this week but it seems there's been another meltdown so here we are...let's talk about social media (again?)

I've been on Twitter for over 10 years and have around 300 followers. Today I made an account on a Canadian Mastadon server hosted out of Edmonton (aka just down the road). Ah catering – whether it's an informal party, or a formal event, there's a lot to consider. Throw in work and there are so many ways to go wrong. As the health and safety coordinator I arranged a lot of catering for training and celebrations. My ‘go-to’ was pizza or a taco bar. So easy for vegans, vegetarians, people allergic to mushrooms, and people with food sensitivities. Even when we had barbecues I made sure to have plant-based and non-dairy options. The only difficulty was how many servings to have on hand because there's always someone who takes enough for 2+ people. And vegetarian options always go fast.

Today I will visit my gf in Frankfurt (Main) and take the train later. Frankfurt am Main is also known as Mainhattan because of its skyscrapers. We will attend a concert and tomorrow I will do some sightseeing in the city… Going around and exploring the city a bit.

Welcome to #checkin for Tuesday, December 13, 2022!

Good morning/afternoon/evening and welcome to today's #checkin. Today is a special day for me, as it's my last day on my current job. I will start a new job in January. I've been working now for 4 years at this company, but it was time for a change. I could already meet the team of my new company, and they all seem to be around my age (+/- 10 years) and nice and relaxed so far. Of course, I am also bit nervous about the unknown things that lie ahead, but I am sure it will work out.
Fortunately the new company is also around the corner, so I can still go there by foot.

Today I will meet with some guys at the Christmas market and we will drink a bit of mulled wine or maybe Hot chocolate with cream! Yummy! Always loved it when my grandma made Hot chocolate. Also fitting for today is National Cocoa day".
In school it was also very common to have either milk or cocoa drinks.

What's your favorite warm drink (despite tea or coffee) ? Any special drink for cold days? Mulled wine or mead?

Good evening/afternoon/morning everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Hope your Monday was/is nice so far. Weather is still around zero C degrees. Yesterday evening it was snowy/rainy. In yesterday's Diaspora Discussion Day Spa call we were talking about Christmas cards and other greeting cards. I usually don't send Christmas cards, I prefer sending cards to some people when I am on holiday or attending a special event (e.g I sent cards from Wacken Open Air or when I am invited to a Wedding). And I sent a small package including a Christmas card when my gf was in Japan.

We have December. I want cold! However, this greyish day is perfect for staying inside. My gf and I made a yummy Risotto for lunch. The good thing I have leftovers for tomorrow! Yeahaw!
But this was new to me, today is apparently National Noodle Ring Day. One of the oldes recipes dates back to the Pennsylvania Dutch in 1936. I never heard of this before, but this indeed looks like an interesting recipe to try.

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Unfortunately I did not manage to do a #checkin yesterday as I was traveling by train and only on my mobile. So I decided to make a combined checkin,
I was on the PLWM, the Fantasy Christmas market with lights in Dortmund. Medieval/Fantasy themed Christmas market and already the whole week bands were playing there as well.
Open Air concert in December at freezing temps, that was something new, but worth it! Well done. It was really cool, they managed to get the Finnish folk metal Band Korpiklaani and the medieval German folk metal band In Extremo and another smaller folk punk band.
The Finnish people played with bare arms, I guess it must have felt like "summer" for them :)

Any Christmas markets or special seasonal events near you? Even if you don't observe Christmas, maybe also something festive for other holidays/special days or a ritual? A friend told me he will fast again starting next week, seems like some religious tradition as well.

Good evening/morning/afternoon everyone and welcome to today's #checkin. Wet and cold greetings from Germany. Ugly weather. Today was the National Warning Day and at 11am most phones buzzed and made a noise. It was the first time they tested Cell Broadcast, a technology where all phones that are logged into a cell tower receive an alert. The standard is decades old but only recently and finally implemented in Germany... Yeah...

To my surprise it worked reasonable well and also the sirens in the city were going. So when was the last time you were positively surprised? Maybe even from the Government? Something they did excellent? Of course any other surprise as well!

Welcome to #Checkin for Wednesday, November 23, 2022!

Here's the end of my moderating week again! @Rodrigo Mesa is up next. But before I go, what is something you surprised yourself by doing - something at one time you thought you'd never do? Do share the experience! (If you've never surprised yourself by anything, what's happening in your part of the world?)

My surprise: I've never liked country music, nor have I ever had an iota of interest in line dancing - I didn't have negative opinions about them, they just weren't my shtick. Recently, one of my pals mentioned a local place that had beginner's drop-in sessions for line dancing. She had heard people of all ages were enjoying this low-key activity. So, on a recent Tuesday evening, we decided to drop in and check it out. We weren't sure we were going to stay long but the instructors were very good - everyone learned quickly and had a good time together. It wasn't at all what I imagined it to be, at least what's being taught here. 🤣🤣🤣

Good morning/afternoon/evening! I still think it's beyond cool that Checkineers are from so many places. I've been enjoying myself with a language app recently. Until I tried it I didn't appreciate how much easier it is to learn another language now. Speaking of which, did you know there are ~7.100 spoken languages in this world of ours? How many languages, spoken or unspoken (e.g. sign language) are you familiar with? Since so many of you are technical, feel free to include programming languages. 🙂
