Silent killer: Russia boosts grinding Donbas advance with chemical warfare

Russia has increasingly deployed chemical agents in its grand offensive to occupy the last cities in the Donbas region under Ukrainian control. The suffocation tactic is to take out entrenched personnel and dampen the morale of Ukrainian soldiers who – severely outmanned and outgunned – have been withdrawing village by village in the east for nearly a year.

Gasping for air from a trench in eastern #Ukraine, an infantryman was ready for the worst when a suffocating white smoke spread into his position.

A #Russian drone had just dropped a gas grenade into the trench, an internationally banned practice in warfare used to suffocate Ukrainian soldiers hiding inside. Forced out in the open, the Ukrainians immediately became vulnerable targets for Russian drones and artillery.

An #advertisment for the use of #US-American #weapons in Ukraine

#DU rounds are frequently used by many armed forces, including the U.S. and the U.K. The rounds are denser than lead, and they self-sharpen when they make impact with a target. They are kinetic rounds, which do not explode, but penetrate a tank's armor when fired at high speeds and can be used to engage enemies at a greater distance. They wouldn't be fired from Ukraine's Soviet-era tanks, experts say, and would likely only be compatible with Western-made military vehicles.

DU munitions are "the most potent tank ammunition that's around," according to former British Army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, who previously commanded U.K. and #NATO #chemical, #biological, #radiological and #nuclear defense (CBRN) #forces.

#Ukraine must win, otherwise all the investment will be blown in the wind. America is too far away from the conflict zone, and some profiteers, feeling safe, are considering already to use nuclear weapons.

Russia's strongest tanks are no match for Ukraine's new weapons

Depleted uranium rounds, which could be heading to Ukraine with U.S. Abrams tanks, "pack a far bigger punch than traditional tank ammunition," one expert said.
