#Storm #Bert to give the #Southwest and #West #coasts a whack
Amateur meteorologist Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said this morning that we can expect up to 100mm of rain to fall in parts over the coming 36 hours, bringing a serious risk of flooding.

In Cork, Met Eireann have warned of 'treacherous, dangerous' conditions and say there is a potential for serious damage to properties.

Status #Red #warnings are rare, only issued when there is dangerous and destructive impacts expected. The national forecast has urged people in affected areas to "take action to protect themselves and/or their properties.”

The impact of such huge amounts of rain can be worsened by soil moisture causing serious flooding. The main impacts of Storm Bert are expected in Cork on Saturday morning and into Sunday, but there is a potential for lasting impacts into early next week.

Two counties - #Cork and #Galway - are on a rare Status Red #weather alert from Met Eireann tonight as Storm Bert is set to make landfall bringing serious impacts including serious flooding and dangerous travel conditions.

The two Status Red alerts come into effect alongside Status Orange and Status Yellow alerts nationwide from midnight tonight until 10am Saturday morning.

West Cork is expected to get some of the worst of the weather from after midnight.

Meteorologists are warning of some severe impacts as the second named storm of the season barrels into Ireland, with live weather radars showing Storm Bert swirling over the Atlantic ahead of hitting the western coast overnight.

Much has been written about emigration from Ireland. Little has been written about immigration to Ireland, even tho it's had a significant impact on the island over the centuries. It's possible that some of my ancestors were Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal who settled in southern Ireland in the 16th century. Looking forward to learning more. A DAD-of-three who died while playing in a Christmas sports event on St Stephen’s Day was an out and out family man with “a larger than life character“.

The #sudden #death aged just 45 of Jamie Wool, from Tivoli in Cork City while playing for #Mayfield GAA has shocked the entire community.

In a fitting tribute Mayfield GAA club described Jamie as “an incredible person who lit up every room he entered”.

They state on the club’s website “It is with great sadness we announce the sad death of Jamie Wool.

“A former club player, Jamie’s incredible wit always lit up every room he entered. Never one to shy away from a sing song you always knew the banter was’nt far away with Jamie about.

“His spectacular appetite for work was always clear to see and his work around the community will be sorely missed. His work on Pitch For Pitch was only one of many things he did for our club.

You don’t want this guy as a swim buddy.
#Redbarn #Beach in #East #Cork is closed to swimmers today following a sighting of the dangerous #Lion’s #Mane #jellyfish.

The red flags have been raised in the popular Youghal spot after the jellyfish, one of the largest species of jellyfish there is, was spotted in the water.

Most likely to be spotted in the waters of Ireland and the UK between June and late September, a sting from a Lion’s Mane jellyfish can be quite nasty, causing swelling, itching, burning, severe pain, and long red stripes that often blister.

All jellyfish possess stinging cells, “stingers”, on their tentacles. According to the HSE, brushing against tentacles can cause the release of these stingers which contain venom (poison).

“Depending on the type of jellyfish, the stingers may not be sharp enough and long enough to pierce the skin and the skin forms a natural barrier to most stings. More delicate areas, such as the eyes and lips, might be more easily pierced.” said a HSE spokesperson.

“However, the Lion’s Mane stinging cells are much sharper and can pierce skin easily resulting in a painful sting. Jellyfish stings in Ireland are not usually life-threatening and just require basic first aid and simple pain relief.”

What to do if you’re stung

If you do find yourself on the receiving end of a jellyfish sting, the advice is to head for the nearest chipper and get yourself some vinegar to rinse the area. Remove any visible tentacles, then soak the wound in hot water for 40 minutes.
