Another Boeing Fail

"According to Safety and Mission Assurance officials at NASA and DCMA officials at Michoud, Boeing’s quality control issues are largely caused by its workforce having insufficient aerospace production experience," the report states. "The lack of a trained and qualified workforce increases the risk that the contractor will continue to manufacture parts and components that do not adhere to NASA requirements and industry standards."

This lack of a qualified workforce has resulted in significant program delays and increased costs. According to the new report, "unsatisfactory" welding operations resulted in propellant tanks that did not meet specifications, which directly led to a seven-month delay in the program.

NASA's inspector general was concerned enough with quality control to recommend that the space agency institute financial penalties for Boeing’s noncompliance. However, in a response to the report, NASA's deputy associate administrator, Catherine Koerner, declined to do so.

"However, the increased costs will benefit Boeing since this is a cost-plus contract that pays for all of Boeing's expenses, plus a fee. This may help to explain why a development program that was originally supposed to be completed in 2021 is not unlikely to be finished until 2028 at the earliest."

No wonder Boeing doesn't want to bid on any fixed price contracts. Who would with this open pipeline to apparently infinite cash.

Mind you, the Boeing Starliner crew was supposed to stay in orbit for 8 days, instead they stuck it out until next February (2025).

Trackable objects in orbit around Earth

Space is changing, and the number of actors operating in orbit is increasing. Meanwhile, the amount of data collected by satellites is increasing as well. This data-treasure is priceless, supporting human and robotic exploration of space, helping us to take care of our planet as well as to unveil the most distant secrets of the Universe. However, one of the main challenges of nowadays space activities is downloading data from space to Earth. IBM and KP Labs together with ESA is forecasting the future of technology by imagining space-based data centres.

New #Research: #Egyptian #Precision #Engineering and #Hidden #Art - #BenVanKerkwyk - #ThinkTank - E40

In a recent episode of the Think Tank, Robert was joined by Ben Van Kerkwyk from UnchartedX to delve into the mysteries of #ancient Egyptian artifacts. Ben shared insights from his CPAK conference presentation, revealing that the precision of granite vases and other stone vessels from ancient Egypt would be challenging to replicate even with today's technology. These artifacts, some over 12,000 years old, were analyzed using advanced scanning techniques, showing precision within microns comparable to modern aerospace standards. Ben also discussed his recent trip to Egypt, where he gathered more data and insights on these ancient artifacts.

The discussion explored the intriguing potential functions of these artifacts, hypothesizing that the vases could have been resonators or part of a sophisticated system, possibly for healing purposes. They also touched on the discovery of a fixed ratio relationship in the vases' geometric design, aligning with musical harmonic scales and suggesting a broader system of design and mathematics used in ancient times. This connection extended to Robert's pyramid research, where he discovered pictures on the walls of the King's Chamber. Robert shared his findings of hidden images and symbols, revealing intricate designs and potential meanings behind these ancient markings, sparking our curiosity and engagement.

Robert and Ben further delved into the idea of advanced ancient knowledge, discussing theories of astronomical alignments and the presence of mathematical constants like pi and the golden ratio in these designs. They speculated on an ancient, advanced civilization that left behind these precise artifacts. The episode also covered the fantastic discoveries related to the geometry and dimensions of the pyramids, blending scientific analysis with historical speculation and offering a captivating exploration of ancient mysteries and the remarkable capabilities of ancient civilizations.

Glimpses of Hera’s target asteroids inspire new science

Hera glides past Didymos to Dimorphos

As ESA’s Hera mission for planetary defence completes its pre-launch testing, its target bodies have come into focus as tiny worldlets of their own. A special issue of Nature Communications published this week presents studies of the Didymos asteroid and its Dimorphos moon, based on the roughly five and a half minutes of close-range footage returned by NASA’s DART spacecraft before it impacted the latter body – along with post-impact images from the Italian Space Agency’s LICIACube.

Hera spacecraft trio to fly safe with inter-linked radio

Hera inter-satellite link with Juventas CubeSat

ESA’s Hera mission for planetary defence involves not just one spacecraft but three: two shoebox-sized CubeSats will fly up to a few dozen kilometres away from their mothership around the Didymos binary asteroid system. Keeping this trio in communication to fulfil their own mission needs while also ensuring their safe separation is the task of a novel inter-satellite link radio technology, produced by a Portuguese company best known for terrestrial drone systems.
