Lou Reed: Caught Between the Stars. Launched last week at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, it’s the first large-scale exhibit focusing on the life and work of the indelible artist, writer, singer, guitarist, poet and New York City native. Rare personal artifacts ranging from greeting cards to rare demos and hard-to-find releases represent everything from Reed’s biggest commercial successes to his more obscure work as a poet.

English :
During my last dark room session, I took some relaxing time playing with the photographic process. It's always enjoyable for me to go back to the core principle of this artisanal art. I was digging in it to produce new images for a summer exhibition and even if at present time the result is quite basic, I'm very curious to discover where this trail will lead me to.

How old Ugandan negatives are bringing families back to life | BBC News

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine has made it his mission to preserve and exhibit the work of the late Ugandan studio photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, who recorded the lives of people from the rural town of Mbirizi.

A heartwarming story showing why photography is important.

American Museum of Natural History

Top Photos From the 2021 Wildlife Photography of The Year Competition

image

Selected from over 50,000 entries by photographers in 95 countries, the fifty-seventh Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPOTY) competition shows the beauty and vulnerability of the natural world with animals in their natural habitat. This year's exhibition has proven to be the most competitive in the program's history with the winning images set to be announced later this fall.

The WPOTY competition and exhibition is London's Natural History Museum's global platform for photographers of all ages and levels to capture and share the beauty of the natural world. Every submission is judged anonymously on its creativity, originality, and technical excellence by a panel of international industry experts. There are several categories included in this ranging from age, location, and subject matter. The competition is sponsored by renewable energy company Ørsted and Seedlip

This year's submissions already include a diverse range of unique images including a lynx making a comeback from an ecological disaster and narwhal shrimp attempting to communicate at great depths below the surface of the ocean. Ahead of the official winner announcements this October, a special selection of "Highly Commended" photographs have been released to remind viewers of "the importance of the variety and variability of life on earth."

Below are some of the top images from several categories of the competition as selected by the judges:

Eye-Opening Photos Show How Plastic Waste is Polluting Our Planet

image

The UN has a new online photo exhibition titled Plastic is Forever. Captured by photographers from around the world, the stark images reveal how mankind's use of plastic has impacted the daily lives and environments of people and animals across the globe.

"Plastic waste can take anywhere from 20 to 500 years to decompose, and even then, it never fully disappears; it just gets smaller and smaller," the exhibition states.

Recent research has shown that these manta rays ingest as much as 137 pieces of plastic an hour, which exposes their population to unknown long-term risks. Photo ©BRS / Vincent Kneefel (The Netherlands)

Of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic that has ever been made, half of it was produced in just the last 13 years.

"Microplastics in particular have been found in every corner of the globe, from the peak of Mount Everest to the trough of the Mariana Trench," the UN writes. "In fact, it has been estimated that humans ingest a credit card worth of plastic per week!

"Yet of all discarded plastic so far, 12% has been incinerated, only 9% has been recycled, and the remainder has either been disposed of in landfills or released into the environment."

It's the plastic that has been piling up in landfills and littering the natural world that the photos in the new exhibition focus on.

"This year, we asked people from all walks of life around the world to share with us photos that showcase how the indiscriminate use of plastic waste is impacting their daily lives and surroundings," the UN writes. "We are proud to present to you the top-tier entries."

"Let’s work together to find a sustainable way to co-exist with plastic," the UN writes. "If #PlasticIsForever, then society needs to re-think and re-shape our relationship with this complex, useful and ubiquitous material."

The photographs in this exhibition were selected from winners of The Plastic Waste Partnership photo contest put on by the Basel Convention, the international treaty that's designed to reduce the amount of hazardous waste transferred from developed to less-developed nations. You can find a larger selection of photos in the online exhibition over on the UN website.
