The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

10 brilliant PC games you can enjoy without a graphics card

A floating city with neoclassical architecture, flying ships, and a giant statue in the center.
Modern PC gaming often gets a bad rap for being too demanding, pricing out countless gamers who lack powerful graphics cards. Plus, the state in which some AAA games get released, makes them a struggle to play even on high-end GPUs. Fortunately, the most demanding games don’t always equate to the most impressive ones.

Even if you don’t have a recent graphics card on your gaming PC, you have a treasure trove of titles to explore. You actually don’t even need a discrete GPU (or a PC) to experience these must-play games. Even your laptop with Intel HD or Iris Xe graphics (or AMD equivalent) can handle these titles, albeit sometimes with optimized settings.

Firewatch looks like an interesting game to try.

Trigger Bot 😱🎮

tl;dr: write "trigger bot" in the chat to #exploit #gaming #anticheat #software. This will result in permanently ban for the #gamer 😱- - - - - -

OVERVIEW
Signature scanning is a mechanism implemented by all modern anticheats. When used correctly, it is an effective way to catch and ban cheaters in video games.
Also antiviruses use this technique to catch and identify malware so the method is not new or fundamentally flawed.
The way signature scanning works is that it scans your computers memory for footprint of known cheat software.
This requires that the anticheat devs carefully analyze the cheat and create an UNIQUE signature that is only found in your RAM when the cheat is loaded and NEVER found when the cheat is not loaded.
RICOCHET AND SIGNATURE SCANS
As expected, Ricochet also uses signature scanning as one of its many methods of detecting and banning cheaters.
Earlier this year, when I was tracking memory allocations of their kernel module, I stumbled upon a memory region that caught my attention. Unlike most regions, this one contained
a lot of strings, all of them cheating related. Reversing the structure confirmed my suspicions; it was a list of signatures for a signature scan routine.
THE SIGNATURES
As I said before, anticheats must be extra careful when creating signatures for cheats - a bad signature could lead to innocent players being banned.
Well, without further ado, lets take a look at a few signatures Ricochet has been using:
53 63 72 65 65 6e 73 68 6f 74 20 63 6f 75 6e 74 65 72 (Screenshot counter)
54 72 69 67 67 65 72 20 42 6f 74 (Trigger Bot)
42 00 75 00 62 00 62 00 6c 00 65 00 20 00 45 00 53 00 50 00 (B.u.b.b.l.e. .E.S.P.)
As you can see, Ricochet is a big fan of using plaintext ASCII (and multibyte) strings for their signature scans. What could go wrong?
THE EXPLOIT
So now we know that anyone who has the sequence "Trigger Bot" in their games memory will be flagged as a cheater.
This might sound reasonable at first glance since "Trigger Bot" is a common occurrence in cheat menus. Surely you are using one if this phrase is found from your game, right?
Well, unfortunately for Ricochet, that's not the case. Someone sends a message in game chat, that message will be in your games memory. Someone sends you a friend request - their name will be in your games memory.
When you are playing a game, all the player names in your lobby - guess what? In your games memory.
THE IMPLICATIONS
For quite some time it has been possible to get people permanently banned by sending them a friend request or posting a message ("Nice Trigger Bot dude!") in game chat.
I even heard of someone who made an autohotkey script to spam join Warzone lobbies and post messages in chat to get anyone in the lobby banned who is scanned by Ricochet during the game (couldn't be me, honest).
I am in a position where I can say that several thousand random COD players were banned by this exploit before the streamers began to be targeted. Censor, Parasite - etc and the others were targeted before the big reveal. I planned to target more but it seems when several major streamers are perma banned, Ricochet will turn bans off and investigate. No fun. x)
This is the result of major oversight from the Ricochet team by using improper signatures.
Activision has already started to unban accounts that were banned using this exploit, but this comes with a caveat: also real cheaters who were caught by these signatures will get unbanned. Also Ricochet seems to not understand how many people got pwned by this with their small number claims. x)
You can read their statement here with highly downplays the number of false bans issued - https://x.com/CODUpdates/status/1847001212761350574

Thinking of Buying a Cheap Racing Wheel? Don’t Bother

Large screen TV showing a car racing game with a few cars racing on a tar track. In front stands a black steering wheel, with a gear shifter on its left, and some foot pedals can be seen underneath it.
Incredibly true! I wasted money my first time around by “saving” money on a cheaper steering wheel… That 270 deg rotation, no pedals, no gear shifter option, compatibility issues, etc all broke my experience. I could not get my truck to keep on a straight line properly even.

I forked out for the Logitech G29 wheel with pedals and shifter, and what a major difference. It is by no means a pro wheel, but it does everything I need and performances well enough to really enjoy the games i use it will. It is compatible with everything (including Linux) and has a couple of useful extra buttons and paddles to make the game experience great.

This wheel cost a bit more, but I’ve been using it for a good many years now without any issues.

So, like the title goes, really don’t bother with a wheel that does not meet the basic requirements. A Logitech G29 is probably a good minimum benchmark to work from.

How I turned OBS into a ShadowPlay replacement — works on Windows, macOS, and Linux

Part of a map in the background, and overlaid in the foreground are three large icons with text labels Instant Replay, Record, and Broadcast LIVE.
If you have an Nvidia graphics card, you’ve probably heard of ShadowPlay. It’s a feature that you can enable so that when you press a key bind, it saves the last X amount of minutes to a folder on your PC. It’s constantly recording using a hardware encoder for a limited hit on your GPU, and it’s something that you can’t really get on any other hardware. AMD’s equivalent is ReLive, but it pales in comparison to ShadowPlay and its performance. However, with OBS, you can make your own ShadowPlay that works on any machine… and yes, it even works on Mac and Linux.

OBS has a feature that you can enable called “Replay Buffer.” It does the same thing as ShadowPlay and ReLive, except instead of actively writing temporary recordings to the disk, it stores them in your system memory.

This is actually quite a good idea, and I really like that it is cross-platform. If you use Steam Games, they also came out with an auto-record feature that can easily save that last 2 hours (or longer) of play. I’ve been using that on Linux the last month or two.

You Can Now Add Family Members to Your Steam Library

Light blue background with circular Steam logo in the centre
This seems like Déjà Vu?

Valve added Steam Families to the Steam Beta Client in May. And now, it’s ready for prime time in the stable Steam app. With Steam Families, a parent can share games in their library with up to “six close family members.” Multiple people can play games from the shared library, which includes titles that all Steam Family members own. Steam Families also supports playing shareable games in offline mode. Of course, everyone gets to earn their achievements, save their own game progress, have access to workshop files, and more.

What appears different though is the ability to pool the use of available titles. Multiple people can play the same game simultaneously, so long as the shared library has enough copies of a game to play at the same time.

It’s true that for family and friends you’d not be adding and removing people all the time, so I suppose the 12-month rule will also stop this being abused (to some extent).

The FloorBoard — a DIY Foot Operated PC Button Pad

A foot rest with a white top. Inset at the top side is a smaller black panel with three coloured buttons, namely a blue, yellow and red one.
The FloorBoard would be useful for people with limited use of their hands hence the inclusion in the Assistive Tech channel. For example, using the foot button for ‘Control’ means that just one finger is required for ‘Copy’ (Ctrl C). This avoids the necessity of using Sticky Keys (an accessibility feature in Windows designed to assist users who may have difficulty holding down multiple keys simultaneously).

It may even appeal to gamers where it could emulate foot controls such as car and aircraft pedals. Many games requite a forward and reverse action, and I must say I do find the WASD buttons a bit difficult to move quickly with in the heat of battle.
