Had the best morning. Finally started ripping out the agapanthus along the driveway. It's been there for years and is a mess. After a couple of hours with a small pick and pitchfork, the first of the garden of pelargoniums has begun.

Also I've discovered the 18 month old compost is absolutely beautiful! So good you could bathe in it. (Gardeners will get it.) So I can move various rotting food scraps and leaves around and start a new compost, new garden bed and top up the veggies. In other news the sweet potato has over wintered successfully, which is new for Melbourne but I'm not mad. There was a tiny wee sweet potato in the compost that I initially mistook for a carrot. It's been replanted as a seed, now that we're close to the top half of the year.

The weather has taken a cold turn, which is normal for this time of year though it does feel like it's straight off the Southern ocean. I'm glad I didn't put in the tomatoes or basil. The broccoli and other brassicas that bolted to seed in warm August may now sow a decent late cool crop. Since they are able to cross pollinate there may be a mix of purple cauliflower, purple broccoli, mustard, kale, rocket and collard greens. With a bit of romanesco and brussels sprouts the offspring could end up looking suitable for space station experiments. The lettuce from the F2 generation reverted to something like 17th (?) century French lettuce ancestor, which was exciting. F2 broad beans are powering ahead.

Still waiting to see if more lettuce, coriander or parsley will make an appearance. Might be a good time to sow collard greens and let nature have Her way. The plan is to put in another few fruit trees, as the veggies growing in shade seem to be doing better in the changing climate. That could actually be a win. I will investigate. For science!

Glorious day in West Footscray today. It's going to be 20c, I'm tossing up whether to start some spring seedlings early. Tomatoes and basil typically go in the ground between show day and cup day in Melbourne. Mid September to the start of November. It's looking like being a better season for them than last year but I'm leaning towards backyard containers for the tommies just in case.

In other garden news, I've decided on a pair of granny Smith apples by the gate, because they're the sour worms of fruit and excellent to bake with. The spot under the bedroom window that has had 2 years preparation with compost will be awesome for a black grape vine and Australian currants.

This is the best year ever.

A study from the University of Michigan looked at how much CO2 was produced when growing food in different types of urban farms and found that, on average, a serving of food made from traditional farms creates 0.07kg of CO2.The impact on the environment is almost five times higher at 0.34kg per portion for individual gardens, such as vegetable patches or allotments.

The majority of the emissions do not come from the growing of the food themselves, the scientists say, but from the infrastructure needed to allow the food to be grown.

We have had a couple large chili plants on the balchony, and now that it has become cold they stand at the kitchen stairs where I hope they will be able to survive the lack of light that is the one sure thing up here North.

I have been busy so the fruits were sitting on the plants until yesterday where I finally found time for this little endeavour. Last year it went pretty well, while the first batch this summer got the wrong bacteria flora and rotted.

So for this second attempt I put some more salt in the mix. Hopefully not too much. I should be able to see small bubbles in the comming days and then i'll let it ferment for a month. The chillis will then be soft enough for me to blend them and add some vinegar. I already have some lemon vinegar (made putting the outer lemon peel in white wine vinegar) that I will use as seasoning.

My latest system to keep the chillis under water are two glass tops the one inside the glas from a smaller jar and tilted so the air will be able to get out.

my fellow horsetrailians: #NoCurtinCall
from the Curtin (embolded for brevity)

The rumours are true.
It’s with an agonisingly sad heart, that The John Curtin hotel’s time on this earth will come to an end.
The owners of the almost 150 year old building have decided to sell, making way, most likely for apartments.
We (my home and work family) have a lease until the end of Nov this year. Beyond that, we have no idea what the developers will have planned for us.
We will have a lot more to say on the matter down the line, but I assure you, we will go out with a BANG!
If you have never played but would like to, if you sold out the room and would like to do it again, if you want to claim your piece of history - bands NOW IS YOUR TIME.
Contact our incredible booker, Paris Martine
Once these restrictions ease we can party a bit more but until then, hope to see your faces over the bar at some point real soon - don’t be a stranger. We need you now more than ever.
Love, Rusty, Imogen, Sonny, Peaches + all of the Curtin family.
We love you.
