A north wind and #Ottawa is once again "smoked out" today, due to forest fires burning in #Quebec. The photo shows the morning sun in the smokey sky. Visibility is 3 miles (5 km) in #smoke, so have to stay indoors today with the windows all closed, as the smoke is quite toxic.

Well, this is a sign of serious...

I just watched a news show saying Quebec's smoke is now creating a health/visibility concern far away, including New York.

So I looked West, camera in hand, and see this! It's been somewhat dark - it's not sunset yet - but I didn't realize how dark!
Worse than the "Sahara dust" a few years back (well, less Pinkish) ... I can't even see New Jersey, or a passing boat, clearly through the haze... This is West bank of Manhattan looking West (North/Canada to the right). Usually the other side is crisp, piers, condos, etc.

And usually this would be blue with the beginnings of a golden or orange sunset. Can't even see any sign of the sun. Thick...

The Association québécoise de la lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique, an organization fighting air pollution, has praised the move. The organization's president, André Bélisle, hopes other jurisdictions will follow suit.

"Sulphur particles are emitted that can be bothersome for people particularly children, seniors and people with respiratory or cardiac conditions," he says about the aftermath of a firework explosion.

The Quebec Court of Appeal has approved a class-action lawsuit launched on behalf of Facebook users who claim they were discriminated against because the social media giant allowed advertisers to target job and housing ads based on factors like age, gender or race.

The class action could include thousands of Quebec residents who have used Facebook since April 2016 and who were looking for jobs or housing during that period.

Facebook has 60 days after the court's Dec. 22 ruling to decide whether to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. If it does not appeal, the case returns to the Quebec Superior Court.

Audrey Boctor, a lawyer with the Montreal law firm IMK who launched the class action application in 2019, said the ruling "offers a way forward for claims that might otherwise never be brought."

"We are very pleased with the Quebec Court of Appeal judgment that recognizes that class actions are an appropriate vehicle for claims of widespread, surreptitious discrimination," Boctor said.

"Algorithmic discrimination that excludes people such as women and older workers from receiving employment advertisements is just a modern form of the same type of discrimination that is illegal under the Quebec Charter."
