The Nuclear Fallacy: Why Small Modular Reactors Can't Compete With Renewable Energy - CleanTechnica

https://cleantechnica.com/2023/01/18/the-nuclear-fallacy-why-small-modular-reactors-cant-compete-with-renewable-energy/

This article explains well why nuclear energy, even the small modular reactors, are not the solution. Easy and fast to build, already existing renewable energy is.

Boring and easy to estimate is good, and what we need to tackle this crisis. Anything is else just techbro's talking.

Researchers create smaller, cheaper flow batteries for clean energy

Flow batteries offer a solution. Electrolytes flow through electrochemical cells from storage tanks in this rechargeable battery. The existing flow battery technologies cost more than $200/kilowatt hour and are too expensive for practical application, but engineers have now developed a more compact flow battery cell configuration that reduces the size of the cell by 75%, and correspondingly reduces the size and cost of the entire flow battery. The work could revolutionize how everything from major commercial buildings to residential homes are powered.

GE Renewable Energy, Hyundai Electric Sign Turbine Manufacturing Partnership

GE Renewable Energy and Hyundai Electric have signed a strategic partnership agreement as the next step in their efforts to work together to serve the South Korean offshore wind market. Under the terms of the agreement, Hyundai Electric will serve as a manufacturing associate to help localize assembly of the Haliade-X offshore wind turbines and generators in South Korea. The firm agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding first announced by the two companies in February of 2022.

'Historic' USD1.5 billion upgrade for US national labs

The US Administration has issued a new report setting out initial priorities - including fusion - it says will enable it to reach net-zero by 2050, and is providing more than USD1.5 billion under Inflation Reduction Act funding to upgrade facilities and modernise infrastructure at the national laboratories which will undertake the research and innovation to support this.

Algae could boost solar panel efficiency by 4%

A Swedish team has inaugurated a pilot facility to mass produce algae material that can potentially boost silicon solar module efficiency by 4% and thin film by 36%. The algae are added to the encapsulant in silicon-based modules or to the anti-reflective coating on the glass of thin film modules. The team estimates the resulting modules would be 3.9% cheaper.

US companies look to expand Natrium reactor deployment

TerraPower and PacifiCorp are looking into the feasibility of deploying up to five additional Natrium reactors and integrated energy storage systems in PacifiCorp's service territory by 2035. This is in addition to their previously announced plans to build the Natrium demonstration plant at the site of a retiring PacifiCorp coal-fuelled plant in Wyoming.

How #Kenya Became the #World’s #Geothermal Powerhouse

source: https://reasonstobecheerful.world/kenya-geothermal-energy-world-leader/

Of all #renewables, geothermal #energy is especially useful for #industrialization, a goal shared by countries across #Africa. For one, unlike sources such as wind and solar, it provides a reliable stream of power critical to energy-intensive industrial processes. Moreover, geothermal need not be converted to #electricity at all: Direct applications — where geothermal steam itself is used — abound.

Switching from #fossil #fuels to #renewable #energy could save the world as much as $12tn by 2050, an Oxford University study says.

The report said it was wrong and pessimistic to claim that moving quickly towards cleaner energy sources was expensive.

That is $13 trillion out of the pockets of energy companies. That is the main reason they are pushing #Nuclear and #Hydrogen solutions.
