Researchers in #China have developed a robot chemist powered by artificial #intelligence (AI) that might be able to extract oxygen from water on Mars. The robot uses materials found on the red planet to produce catalysts that break down water, releasing oxygen. The idea could complement existing oxygen-generating #technologies or lead to the development of other catalysts able to synthesize useful #resources on Mars.
Sounds like the beginning of a horror science fiction story because the developers forget to tell the AI when it is finished. So the AI transfered the whole Mars to oxygen...

A robot crushed a man to death in South #Korea after the machine apparently failed to differentiate him from the boxes of produce it was handling, the Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday.
Do you remember the ethical discussion about whether self-driving cars should hit a child or an elderly person when in doubt? I always thought the discussion was misguided because the sensors can't even separate a person from a box.

Algorithms are incapable of comprehending the value of human #life, and so should never be empowered to decide who lives and who dies. Indeed, the United Nations Secretary General #AntónioGuterres agrees that “machines with the power and discretion to take lives without human involvement are politically unacceptable, morally repugnant and should be prohibited by international law.”
Mankind would be well advised if its technology did not overtake its ethics.
