Silent killer: Russia boosts grinding Donbas advance with chemical warfare

Russia has increasingly deployed chemical agents in its grand offensive to occupy the last cities in the Donbas region under Ukrainian control. The suffocation tactic is to take out entrenched personnel and dampen the morale of Ukrainian soldiers who – severely outmanned and outgunned – have been withdrawing village by village in the east for nearly a year.

Gasping for air from a trench in eastern #Ukraine, an infantryman was ready for the worst when a suffocating white smoke spread into his position.

A #Russian drone had just dropped a gas grenade into the trench, an internationally banned practice in warfare used to suffocate Ukrainian soldiers hiding inside. Forced out in the open, the Ukrainians immediately became vulnerable targets for Russian drones and artillery.

Aore important is that the official message clearly states, that "this case will provide combat-tested data to improve capabilities". Opinion: The Kursk incursion underlines the urgency of unrestricted support for Ukraine

Restricting Kyiv's military actions, including the #KurskIncursion, only serves to prolong the war and bolster Russia; full support for Ukraine's approach is crucial for advancing peace.

Over the past few years, Ukrainians have learned that externally-imposed restrictions, aimed at keeping the war contained within Ukraine’s borders, have only enabled Russia and, tragically, led #Ukraine into a lethal war of attrition.

Ukraine strikes Russian airfields with homemade weapons in hopes of preventing devastating attacks at home

Ukraine's Air Force spotted 11 Tu-95MS strategic bombers in Russian airspace at around 5 a.m. on Aug. 26. In less than three hours, Ukraine was under the largest aerial attack since the start of the full-scale war, with 127 missiles and 109 drones flying into Ukraine.

To attack #Ukrainian cities far from the front, the Kremlin uses strategic #bombers and fighter jets stationed deep inside Russia, along with ground launchers closer to the border.

With a U.S. ban on #missile strikes deep inside Russia still in place, to minimize Russia's capacity to launch mass attacks, Ukraine is forced to employ domestically produced #drones to target #airfields and launch sites.

Kursk incursion presents Kremlin with border dilemma, ISW says

The #ISW said Russia had treated its border with Ukraine as a "dormant #frontline," that clearly did not have the level of military resources required to defend against such an attack.

"Russia's prolonged treatment of the international border area as a dormant frontline is a strategic failure of imagination," it said.

The Ukrainian military launched a surprise incursion across the border into Kursk Oblast on Aug. 6, bringing regular Ukrainian forces into Russia for the first time.

Although reinforcements sent by Moscow have begun to arrive on the battlefield, Ukraine has reportedly continued to advance farther into #Kursk Oblast.

Russia recycles old videos in attempt to show success against Ukraine's incursion

The Russian Defense Ministry published videos claiming to show successful strikes against Ukrainian forces in Kursk Oblast, but the videos were filmed in other locations and at other times, the Russian independent news outlet the Insider reported on Aug. 10.

The Russian Defense Ministry and state-controlled media circulated videos that they alleged show Russian forces defeating Ukrainian troops in the region. A video published Aug. 9 claimed to show Russian troops carrying out strikes against the Ukrainian military in bordering #Sumy Oblast in response to the Kursk incursion.

The video was in fact first posted weeks before the offensive, the Insider reported. The Russian state media outlet TASS published the video on July 14.

Reports of Ukrainian #POWs being #tortured or #killed while in Russian captivity have been surfacing since the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. As of June, the Prosecutor General's Office said 28 criminal investigations were underway regarding the execution of 62 Ukrainian POWs.

The ombudsman asked international organizations to record another human rights violation by Russia and called on Ukraine's law enforcement to verify the identity of the killed person and the fact of the crime.
