Today is the penultimate full day of #summer in the #northern #hemisphere if, like the majority of the population on the planet, you live in or east of #Europe or #Africa. The #equinox will occur a little after 02:00Z on Friday 23 September. With today's #sunset, I present two #photographs but each both in #greyscale (or #BlackAndWhite) and #colour.

I think the contrast is better in black and white #image and you can more clearly see the #birds flying about. The colour one is of course richer and has that extra dimension.

This wider shot shows a greater expanse of #sky with more variation in colour (only for the colour image, of course).

Record heat waves in Swiss Alps

The ski resort, Glacier 3000, in the Les Diablerets area of western Switzerland said this year's ice melt was around three times the 10-year average.

"Ten years ago I measured about 15 metres of ice. So more than 15 metres of ice and snow have melted," says Mauro Fischer, a glaciologist at the University of Bern's Institute of Geography.

Ancient hiking trail revealed as Swiss glacier retreats by 15 metres

An Alpine path between two glaciers in Switzerland is emerging for what a local ski resort says is the first time in at least 2,000 years after the hottest European summer on record.

Earlier, I posted an #overcast #sky but the #clouds are clearing along the western #horizon. Here the #sunset is approaching but I would call this a #sunsink, as the #Sun emerges from its erstwhile #occlusion but the #Earth is about to rotate it over the edge into #night. The #orange light cast into this room was beautiful for a few moments.

The #clouds have come over this afternoon and actually look quite interesting with undulations on the underside indicating unstable temperature variations in the atmosphere.

#Sunset and three #birds. Well, one biological bird and two big mechanical ones. The #aeroplanes were flying in opposite directions; the one on the left flying to the right (north).

As I was walking home from shopping today, I spotted this #cricket (is it a #grasshopper? I don't know) as it flew in between us and landed on the driveway. It was about 2 cm in length and sat quite still and so I got my #camera to #photograph it. I'm calling this one the Cricket at its Shadow.

Today was again a #sunny end to the #day and I decided to take #portrait #photographs of the #sunset. This shows a greater portion of #sky away from the #horizon and so you can gauge the #colour gradients better.

This first one gives a wider (taller) field of view without the window frame encroaching into the #image.

The second one is slightly more zoomed in.

A sharp heavy #shower passed through and I tried to capture the #rain by switching to #ManualFocus to #focus in on the #Raindrops rather than the #background. I think the effect isn't bad. There had been an even heavier shower earlier but I didn't think about capturing it.

It was another sunny day but there are a few more #clouds around now, particularly around the horizon. At the time of taking this #photograph, it was still quite bright but by framing it as I have, it gives a more fiery, moody and perhaps even a sinister air to it.

A #day can a difference. Yesterday's #sunset was following a very settled day but today there were showers at the end of the day and so the #sky was a bit more dramatic. You could say it was more "atmospheric", dramatically anyway. The framing makes the #cloud in the #foreground look a bit menacing but in reality it was quite high and the showers had passed.

It was a very pleasant sunny day today, quite warm but not overly so (maybe 24°C) and very few #clouds in the #sky. This often makes #sunset #photographs a bit mundane in my opinion. Still, here you can see a baroque #horizon and a little #halo around the #Sun.
