'Grubby horse trading' in UK government

The recent days have seen the national focus pulled onto the House of Lords through the public row between Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson over the latter’s resignation honours list.

While the spat has provided high political drama it has also shown how low our constitutional politics has sunk. The varying accounts of what Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak agreed over the honours list have pulled back the curtain on the grubby horse-trading that goes on around choosing who sits in the upper chamber.

Yet, the impact of this list will last long after the melodrama between the Prime Minister and his predecessor has subsided. For instance, each of the seven new peers has been handed a job-for-life in parliament, which means potentially decades of influence legislating for the public, with which most have had little meaningful contact.

Vote 2024 Pledge

The 2024 General Election will take place after almost 15 years of Conservative government.

It seems like a good time for Fox's #shareholders to sue #Fox for the failure of Fox's senior management to uphold their fiduciary responsibilities by dispensing with such a valuable asset with no appreciable rationale.

When a corporation does what Fox has done it often indicates that senior #management &/or major #voting shareholders are more interested in controlling #information than in producing profits & returns on #investments.

Control of information is control of understanding is #control of #perceptions is control of choices is control of societies.

Local Elections: England

It’s unfair, undemocratic and completely fails to represent the views of voters. There is a better way.

Local councils are supposed to represent their communities. But often the make-up of council chambers fail to reflect how people voted – The First Past the Post system throws millions of votes on the scrapheap.

In London alone, 90% of wards with more than one councillor are represented by just one party, leaving hundreds of thousands of voters without a voice.

The shortage of candidates is not only a problem in Labour-dominated areas like Liverpool and Manchester, but also in traditional “Tory shires” such as in East Anglia. Former chair of the Hitchin and Harpenden local Conservative association, Matt Stephens, believes the “Tory brand” is coming to an end.
