Why AI is a disaster for the climate

The Guardian

Amid all the hysteria about ChatGPT and co, one thing is being missed: how energy-intensive the technology is. (...)

Given the current hysteria about AI, I thought I’d check to see where it is on the chart [of the Gartner Hype Cycle]. (...)

(Text continues underneath the photo.)

All of this serves the useful function – for the tech industry, at least – of diverting attention from the downsides of the technology that we are already experiencing: bias, inscrutability, unaccountability and its tendency to “hallucinate”, to name just four. (...) Which is worrying because its environmental impact will, at best, be significant and, at worst, could be really problematic.

How come? Basically, because AI requires staggering amounts of computing power. And since computers require electricity, and the necessary GPUs (graphics processing units) run very hot (and therefore need cooling), the technology consumes electricity at a colossal rate. (...)

So maybe the best hope for the planet would be for generative AI to topple down the slippery slope into Gartner’s “trough of disillusionment”, enabling the rest of us to get on with life.

This is kind of interesting. These are all #AI designed #quilts. I had Stable Diffusion create these by just inputting "a #quilt" and these four are what it produced. Doing a reverse image search shows that these are original designs and not copied from existing quilts, although the AI obvious learned from studying real world quilt pictures. The designs fit in the overall all world of quilting (ie they are credible) but have some innovations. All could probably be sewn up too in real life.

@Kathryn Barr may have something to add.

For me, the second half of the 80's was about playing games with my neighbor on his Atari 130XE and learning BASIC on a PMD 85 after school. Little I knew about sir Clive's Z88 which amaze me today. Playing games, writing documents, programming, calculating. Everything is possible. And hey, there is also a serial port and a terminal software, that mean no excuses to stay offline!

Fast forward from 1987 to 1999 when Palm has released it's Palm IIIx PDA. Small, with a touch screen. Using graffity, it is possible to write the same way as into a small paper notebook. Much more powerful hardware then the Z88, but also a bit similar device - no multitasking, but programs sleep in the background. No distraction, just pick it up, do the thing and turn it off again. Fast system responses make both devices a pleasure to use (especially today).

The technology of today is incredible compared to just a few years ago and I am happy for that. But I am also happy I can still appreciate how sophisticated some of the old tech stuff really is because it is still fun to use some of the old hardware. Not really for a daily tasks, but with built-in serial ports it is still a safe place for any kind of data as back-ups are so easy to do.
