I did a thing today. Removed the Brave browser from both Android and desktop. I'm using the Mull browser, which is a fork of Firefox and on F-Droid. I have uBlock Origin and NoScript installed and set up with the annoyances filters enabled, which makes things nice and fast. I was able to import everything into my Mozilla account from Brave on the desktop and it flashed over here on Android. I like this enough that I may take security to the next level on another ungoogled phone and do local password management. The rationale is what security steps I would take if my devices were checked, copied, and modified by state security of governments like our own that might make being gay or the medicines that keep me alive highly illegal. It could likely happen in 2025 and starting to protect myself could protect my friends too.

On my to-do list is compiling everything from source, auditing I/O and packets, minimalizing, and getting serious about it. I know a fire in the house could take out everything in a minute and software security is just as important. Being prepared is getting serious about security, because capitalism shows no mercy.

I have experience building embedded computers and devices. Using these skills to secure an Android phone will be a fun project that will take up my free time 😀

TIL that #Brave, the interesting-yet-not-undisputed browser, has at some point started adding a feature named "Brave News" which (apart from doing the obvious and floating your "new tab" view with news from "prominent" outlets) also allows for removing all the preconfigured services and adding plain RSS feeds. Doesn't seem a bad thing at all... .

Why I do not use the #browser #BRAVE

1) The business model involves modern robber baronry. Although they filter out #advertising, they want to sell the freed-up space to other advertising #media. Source: https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/newspapers-to-brave-browser-dont-mess-with-our-ads-or-else/

2) Brave manipulated links without informing users and made profits from it. Source: https://nitter.1d4.us/cryptonator1337/status/1269201480105578496

3) The browser engine is based on #Google #Chrome. Of course, Google only collects our data to improve the quality of its service. Thanks to #Snowden, we know that the data also flows to the #NSA. Unfortunately, Google cannot be trusted. The browser engine is being rebuilt in such a way that filtering out this monitoring and new tracking possibilities will become more difficult.

4) There are better browsers to protect #privacy: https://privacytests.org/private.html

5) Brave is not about providing a secure free browser but about making profit. There is nothing wrong with that in a capitalist world, if they would communicate it openly.
