3rd child dies of flu-related causes in B.C. as cases continue to rise
Just something to be aware of, if you are caring for kids right now:
A third child has died in British Columbia due to complications linked to influenza, cases of which continue to rise in the province.
The latest update from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control says it received three reports of influenza-related deaths in children under the age of 10 during the final week of 2023.
It says that means influenza was a contributing factor but not necessarily the primary cause of death in the children.
The centre previously said on Dec. 29 that two children had died in the preceding two weeks and early findings indicated secondary bacterial infections had contributed to their severe illness, which can be a complication of the flu.

Wir haben uns beide heute morgen beim Hausarzt impfen lassen, kombiniert mit der Grippeschutzimpfung, kostenlos. Ich bin schon seit zehn Jahren in der RIsikogruppe "ab 60". :-) Ich bekam beide Spritzen in den eh ramponierten linken Arm (bin Rechtshänder), sie beidseitig. Soweit keine auffällige Reaktion bei mir, sie hat den für die Grippeimpfung typischen etwas schweren Arm.
Zertifikate gibt's nicht mehr, nur noch die Klebemarken für den Impfpass.

Ottawa's medical officer of health expects the respiratory virus situation in the city to get worse after the holidays.
In her end of year briefing to the board of health, Dr. Vera Etches said Ottawa is seeing a high rate of respiratory viruses heading into a busy time for families to gather.
"It's not easy to hear this but we expect things to get worse after the holidays," Etches said.
"Because so many people gather indoors, aren't wearing masks."

Some experts say providing timely information about the severity of a communicable disease like the flu can help people protect themselves and in this case, their kids.
“…that kind of information can help inform the public and can be useful to encourage people to seek and listen to public health advice,” [Dr. Rod Lim, head of pediatric emergency at the London, Ont., Health Sciences Centre] said.
B.C.'s revelation of its pediatric flu deaths provides a concrete example of how this can work: it triggered a surge in parents bringing their kids to get vaccinated against the flu.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH)'s weekly snapshot says the overall level of respiratory illness in the city remains high.
OPH points out the coming days are the last chance for people to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 in time for it to take effect for the holidays. Also, staying home from gatherings when sick is the best way to show others you care about them.
Local officials say the health-care system, particularly for children, is under a lot of pressure. The flu season is worse and started earlier than normal, plus there are the continued challenges of COVID and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Along with the above advice, wearing masks indoors and keeping hands and surfaces clean are also recommended to help keep people safe, especially more vulnerable people including children.

Local child dies from flu amid severe influenza season

A child in eastern Ontario who tested positive for the flu has died, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit confirmed Sunday.
The health unit did not share any details about the child who died, including their age and whether they had any pre-existing conditions.
The flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to reduce health risk, [Dr. Linna Li, the unit's acting medical officer of health] said, adding everyone over six months of age is strongly recommended to get the shot.
Alberta health minister says 4-year-old child among first influenza deaths in province
Alberta Health Minister Jason Copping said he advises all Albertans to get their flu slot — he also recommended people stay home when sick and wear a mask to reduce the risk of infection.
Alberta Health data states there are 34 people in the ICU with an influenza infection, and 355 people hospitalized, as of Nov. 12.
